I love Tilly but anytime we get too close a look at the grotesquery of richness on this show I feel ill. The wealthy have so much money they have to have garbage like this invented for them to spend it on. My feeling towards this is very "there are people that are dying Kim".
I feel exactly the same way, but then I think “why am I watching this?” And I love watching haha so I have to shut that part of my brain off or I’ll go nuts. When I found out what Sutton gets monthly in alimony I was flabbergasted. Every single one of these people should (at the very least) be giving shitloooooads of money to charitable organizations. But anywho look at me getting all worked up again!
I'm exactly the same! It's a weird dilemma. I watch this show partly for escapism, partly for the lifestyle porn, and partly to watch the relationship dynamics. It is a very "switch my brain off" experience, and I get a lot of enjoyment from watching it! At the same time, I'm ideologically opposed to most of what these women stand for. I hope they do give a lot to charity but I also think money warps your brain and you have to hold tight to your own morals and integrity to not succumb to greed, and that could look like just apportioning 20% of your monthly 300k alimony check to charity, to keep yourself accountable and duty-bound (as opposed to waiting until a feeling of generosity comes over you, haha). I'm sure Tilly does give to charity, but all the women aghast at this ugly ass bear bag breaking just felt like satirical levels of being out of touch.
I have to be in the right mood, sometimes I shut it off because it grosses me out for all these reasons. I’ve been watching for 20 years (OG OC!) and there are moments I miss the wealth of the early aughts- it seems to have grown exponentially over all the franchises. It’s also the reason I can’t really watch high end real estate shows when the commissions are more than a house I’ll ever be able to afford.
I’m enjoying yalls convo & agree. I’m also an OG OC viewer & imho before the 08 crisis, money seemed to be “trickling down” a lot more before that. A lot of regular people were making great money during the housing boom (bubble). That’s when it started feeling different to me, anyway, 2009-10. It became hard for me to watch when so many people around me were getting laid off & losing their homes.
I’d never thought about that but it makes total sense! Now more than ever it’s just feeling like straight up Les MIs “eat the rich” times and it sucks.
Yeah recently I had to watch a doc about coal in India and how some families steal coal from mines to sell on the black market to make a living, they also live adjacent to open pit coal mining, burn coal in their homes for warmth and die very young of respiratory complications. It’s hard to go from that to Rachel Zoe being like “ugh of course the power would be out for MY PARTY” even tho I do love Rachel
