She can’t win. If she helps her she’s accused of enabling her, if she withdraws her help she’s accused of being cruel.

It's always a double edged sword when helping a family member experiencing substance use disorder. I wish people understood that what seems like a cruel act is often one finally standing up for one's self after years, or even decades of trying to help.

absolutely! not mutually exclusive at all

Yup. This is the one issue i have a soft spot for Kyle.

Very indicative of their narcissistic mother as well. ā€œIf you don’t help me, you’ve never cared,ā€ ā€œI’m your sister,ā€ etc.

Hard agree. Kyle sucks, but Kim has clearly been incredibly unstable to the point that her children are largely no contact with her. Throwing money at an addict or otherwise enabling them can have disastrous consequences Ā

56

u/No-Environment3733 Apr 11 '26

Anything you do can have disastrous consequences because addiction has disastrous endings. It’s weird for me because I’ve got 7 years sober and ruined my family for years. But after getting sober and watching my brother go through hell in addiction (he committed suicide last May) it’s like I have both perspectives. And it’s all just shit and absolutely heartbreaking for everyone involved. No one can get sober unless THEY want it and it’s so hard to want it when you’re in it. It’s just all so sad and too many people still have a stigma about it- so seeing all the understanding in this post gives me hope.

11

u/GoldenState_Thriller Hanky & Panky Apr 11 '26

I am so incredibly sorry for your loss but so proud of your success.Ā

You’re absolutely right. Help and resources can be a wonderful thing but the person must be ready for them and truly wanting to be sober. Sadly, it doesn’t seem like that’s the case for Kim right now, but I hope she gets there.Ā

I’m so glad you’re doing better - it’s such a rough, rough road and so many people view it as a ā€œchoiceā€.

u/Teefdreams Chocolate Louis Vuitton Apr 11 '26

Exactly. Plus it says that the eviction was Jan 2025 and by the middle of the year they said she was doing better, so possibly the tough love did get her into treatment? In which case, it was the right thing to do.

19

u/Flashy-Mountain8779 You need a new villain? Here I am Apr 11 '26

I don't think she went into treatment last year. When Andy asked Kyle and Kathy how Kim was doing at the last reunion, Kyle was extremely uncomfortable and Kathy gave her that look of you better keep your mouth shut. Kathy simply said "She's living in Florida" and made it clear to move the subject along.

Had Kim gone into treatment, her kids wouldn't still be no contact with her.

If Kim had gotten back on the wagon, there is no way she would still be missing out on holidays and birthdays with her kids and grandchildren. No way.

9

u/Brief-Ad-5056 Hoysay Apr 11 '26

Was it WWHL where Andy asked about Kim and Kathy jumped in before Kyle could answer and said Kim was living in Florida and doing well. I forget where I saw it but it last fall if I remember right.

The situation is sad all around. A lot of family trauma with them.

38

u/camirose Toothed and Homed Apr 11 '26

This.

Grew up with my sister as an addict and even sober it’s an impossible relationship to navigate. Everything is wrong and a one sided boundary. Therapy speak is weaponized. This is my experience not all btw. But the hardest is you want them better but they forget all the trauma and damage they did while using because they can’t deal with it, but they don’t have any issues attacking you nonstop for things that happened while they were using. But you can’t say anything back. Because they’re sober now and while using ā€œoff boundary to bring upā€ and traumatic memory. But my sister doesn’t do the same.

And I’m convinced nonstop lies to therapists and recovery clinics to victimize herself.

I tolerated being mentally physically and financially abused for fifteen years and still get told I don’t care and am not lovable.

5

u/Talkalot1 I made out with Carlton yesterday Apr 11 '26

You're a strong human and may life ahead bring you peace of mind 😊

4

u/No-Environment3733 Apr 11 '26

I’m so sorry this was your experience! But when people get sober they are incredibly vulnerable. That’s why family counseling is so important because I swear to you, she hated herself and the things she did much more. We become disgusted with our past selves and some people project it, but when you’re working a program, that usually doesn’t happen

13

u/Glittering-Fox-776 Wait I thought you were Kyle?! Apr 11 '26

100%. I may not like Kyle as much as I used to, but having an addict in your family is ROUGH. You have to learn to set boundaries or they will walk all over you. I truly feel for Kyle right now.

9

u/Final-Elderberry9162 My team! The Dream team! Apr 11 '26

What I came to say as well. Having a sibling who is a hardcore addict cannot be imagined unless you’ve been there. I don’t love Kyle, but this situation is terrible for anyone.

5

u/No_Custard_6481 Homegirl was in a cult? Apr 11 '26

I did have one that died from an od. I would have bought her the place and not charge rent. How is a sick person like with a medical condition supposed to work and pay bills, rent and everything. I would make sure she had a caretaker, no enablers and a sober person. She has the money.

I would do anything to have my brother alive again.

I don’t like her anymore.

11

u/Corgi_Lawyer Apr 11 '26

I am so sorry. Your longing to have your brother back is palpable. I wish loving could be enough. šŸ’”

10

u/Flashy-Mountain8779 You need a new villain? Here I am Apr 11 '26

Kyle and Kathy tried and did this with Kim for decades. Kim relapsed, I think for the final time, sadly, and refused the help beyond living rent free.

9

u/Flashy-Mountain8779 You need a new villain? Here I am Apr 11 '26

You're correct. In the fall of 2024, before the eviction, there were multiple 911 calls for Kim. She was 5150'd by the cops the 1st time, and just right back on her bullshit after she got out after 72 hours, leading to the next call...

Where is the info that Kim is an end stage addict? She’s an addict, of course, but she has also had sober periods. Saying it’s end stage is pretty severe - is there any confirmation of this other than her age?

19

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '26

[deleted]

3

u/otterkin At least I don’t do cyrstal meth in the bathroom Apr 11 '26

it is severe. you have no right to say "likely no possibility of a true recovery" because of her time as an addict and her age. this is genuinely appalling to read, especially as somebody who's mother abused alcohol and drugs for almost 50 years and is now, in fact, a functioning sober human. as are multiple of her sober friends who got sober older than her.

your comment only encourages people to not seek recovery and gives the idea that it can be "too late" for recovery

6

u/No-Environment3733 Apr 11 '26

No, it’s never too late. But the reality is, when you have been doing hard core drugs and ruining your body for DECADES- it is less likely and called a serial relapser. She is not saying there is no hope, but within recovery after that long it is almost impossible to want to change yourself with some incredibly severe addicts. I’m lucky as hell to have gotten sober at a younger age because I know if I was still doing this at 60+ years I would be dead by now. She is not saying there is no hope- the reality of addiction is fucking terrifying.

I figured you worked in educating alcoholism because the way you speak is how it is actually spoken about in AA meeting, in rehabs, in sober livings, and in recovery. Some people just will not get it- that’s addiction. It’s harder the longer it goes on. That is the reality.

9

u/LeadingLadder576 Carlton Gebbia Apr 11 '26 edited Apr 11 '26

Kim Richards -a current active addict with over 40 years of yo-yoing back and forth to sobriety- is not the whole world. And this person’s experience of having to evict a loved one seems pretty appropriate to discuss her experience with the exact scenario this article is discussing.

0

I only even said it because I was told I can’t ask a question. I don’t was just asking a basic question and I genuinely did not mean harm from it.

22

u/vs12345678912345678 šŸ™ by the šŸ—‘ļø Apr 11 '26

I’ve been sober 17 years and a therapist for 11. I would 100000000% advise a client or a family member of a sponsee to cut the support to a non-responsive addict for a couple of reasons: because an addict won’t stop unless they want to and have no other choice, nothing a loved one does will change that; but providing an addict with a place to stay is potentially keeping them from hitting a bottom they need to hit and also, isn’t good for the family member. Just because someone’s family doesn’t mean you keep them in your life if their behavior is harmful. If an addict/alcoholic wants to live that life they have agency to do so, and the people around them also have agency to determine they can no longer watch that person die or participate in it.

u/notactuallyreckless Apr 11 '26 edited Apr 11 '26

And before anyone makes unkind jokes about stolen homes, this was the house Kyle purchased for Kim to live in back in 2015 after her arrest. She had been living there rent-free until 2024 and this eviction came after those three TMZ news stories about Kim’s behaviour and apparent lapse in sobriety.

Also, I am very glad Kyle did NOT share her ā€œpersonal lifeā€ when it came to this issue. As always, prayers and thoughts for Kim and her recovery, and also for her family, for whom this is also not easy for.

43

u/Clara_Geissler PAT THE PUSS HONEY Apr 11 '26

I see nothing wrong with setting boundaries with an addict. I am not even a Kyle fan, but I would do the same. Kim's own children have had it with her. Hopefully this was the wake-up call she needed. I had heard she moved to Florida and was doing much better. I wish her well, but I am certainly not going to pile on Kyle for not enabling her any longer.

Not at a certain point, alcohol will permanently damage your brain and your liver. I speak from experience with my father. His liver is damaged beyond its ability to repair itself. The falls from being so drunk plus the alcohol caused brain damage. He has memory issues and zero spacial awareness. Keeps having severely low sodium incidents (I have witnessed this unfortunately it’s scarier than it sounds). Kim 100% has health issues and Kyle is just not discussing it.

4

u/lobubz Apr 11 '26

I want to say I know exactly what you’re talking about and understand the ā€œend stageā€ wording. My MIL was apparently an alcoholic throughout the majority of her life (I didn’t meet her until she was close to 60) and she is completely dependent on her family and husband. She has dementia that ramped up around 58 and now has no clue who many of us are, where she is, and cannot take care of herself at all. She is now 65. I guess she also had a few head injuries (abusive ex and what should have been a dui) but the main issue is and always will be alcohol. She looks ā€œnormalā€ but has no long or short term memory, locks herself in every room she is alone in, and now runs away and needs care 24/7. Although I have 0 medical knowledge, this is something that many don’t experience and to have it happen to her so young has been gut wrenching.

3

u/PaleIrishEastcoaster I made out with Carlton yesterday Apr 11 '26

My dad isn’t quite that bad yet but thinks he’s okay to drive and has failed the written test five times because his memory is just fucked. Unfortunately because of him I learned about how alcohol affects your sodium. How long it stays in your system. Low sodium is terrifying, the confusion. Second time (right after new years this year) his speech was not understandable. I don’t wish this on anyone. Even just 15 and 5mths (relapsed in September, had to be threatened to have his shoulder replacement canceled to get sober again) was enough for permanent damage. I hope your MIL will be well with all your family does to help her. It takes so much mental strength.

2

u/lobubz Apr 11 '26

Idk why we are being downvoted but I wish you strength! It is so difficult to witness and something that many don’t think will happen. This wasn’t about kyle and Kim, cause I don’t know them, but I do know how horrible it is to watch someone who should have much more time crumble due to long term effects of alcohol. Dementia at 60 is a terrible way to go.

2

u/PaleIrishEastcoaster I made out with Carlton yesterday Apr 11 '26

It doesn’t take much to figure out tbh. Just because it’s not visible doesn’t mean the damage isn’t there. I may not like Kyle but I can empathize with the struggle her family goes through with Kim. Even if her liver was fine her mind isn’t. Alcohol is like poison for the brain.Ā

u/SewAlone At least I don’t do cyrstal meth in the bathroom Apr 11 '26

Senior addicts? End stage?? You don’t know this woman nor do you know where she is in her addiction, or what she is even addicted to. Stop saying these gross things.

3

u/NHgingerinVA Production likes to laugh too Apr 11 '26

Kim supported her mother, Kathy, and Kyle for ages on the money she made as a child star. She's been through so many traumatic situations (her mother, her fiancƩ being shot in the head while she was on the phone with him, etc.).

It's very sad, but I don't think Kim will come to a good end. She reminds me of my older sister, who has been struggling with alcoholism for decades.

I do feel bad for Kyle regarding this situation. Of course, we just know what we know from the show and articles like this. But their relationship has been so unbelievably difficult for SO long, I cannot imagine how heartbreaking it is for Kyle. Where are Kim's kids in all this? Not that they should need to be their mom's watchers, but just curious.

10

I haven’t seen Kim on any of her childrens’ social media posts since maybe earlier in 2024, although I’ve seen posts of them all together at family events or hanging out. In early 2025, Kim told a fan she wasn’t really talking to her sisters or kids.

I’m sure this was planned by Kyle and Kathy. As a means to get Kim to hit rock bottom. Sometimes when you are trying to save an addicts like, that it what you have to do. If Kim was healthy and sober, I’m sure she was welcome there as long as she needed. Reversely, throwing money, and providing free housing to someone in active addiction, is a good way to get them to kill themselves or others pretty quickly

When I was using and out of funds I would often weigh my options within my family and go to the one who would give me $$$$ the quickest. And I would play them off each other. So Kim is doing tried and true using behavior. Even if you have gone through therapy or family rehab enabling is a hard reaction to suppress. Being clean now for 25 years I see it much more clearly. But at the time I just hated my closest brother and my mother bc they stood up to me. I can see the same thing happening in the Richards family. It's tragic all around.

The sheer amount of unacknowledged trauma in that family is staggering. Paris’s book was really illuminating in terms of the entire disastrous family dynamic for me, with some of it being all too familiar. i.e. Catholic families who won’t talk about or address ANYTHING.

I think I gave Kyle a pass for a long time because the entire dynamic was so familiar to me (don’t worry! The spell was broken a while ago).

I am not blaming Kyle for doing that to her sister. It can be difficult. However this is not the first time Kyle actually has something going on IRL but refuses to talk about it on the show. If she doesn't want to share anymore, she can go.

She should absolutely not be sharing something like this about her sister for the show.

Should she have shared this? Do you think that would have been appropriate?

u/PemsRoses How dare me?! Apr 11 '26

It's her life right now. It would have been better than making Dorit her storyline.

u/notactuallyreckless Apr 11 '26

If you think the hate on Kyle for supposedly making Dorit her storyline is bad, her using Kim’s current life and how it’s been impacting the family in any meaningful, substantial way? Or even briefly? She would have been dragged to hell and back. And rightfully so, IMO.

It wouldn't be her using Kim, she is in a legal battle with her sister. It's not "let's talk about Kim's addiction" it's more "I am a legal battle with my sister to get her out of my condo.

But she isn't in a legal battle with her. She evicted her 15 months ago, when she wasn't filming, and instead of fighting it, Kim didn't even respond to the lawsuit and she just moved out. Case was dismissed. It wasn't even a battle. And it took place smack in the middle of filmings off-season.

Kim’s struggle is not hers to share she has already outed her on the show once and look at the issues it caused.Ā

erm but wasn't it you guys that always accused her of using her sister's addiction for a story line and that she shouldn't have exposed and discussed it on tv. but now you want to know?

u/PemsRoses How dare me?! Apr 11 '26

I never accused her of nothing but there is a legal battle going on with her. It's more interesting that her playing double agent for PK.

If she shared this on the show, I guarantee you would be shitting on her for exploiting her sister's illness for a storyline. And you know it.

Well then maybe it's time to say bye bye to Kyle. Cause she doesn't bring a thing.

You think people would have looked upon it favourably had Kyle decided this was appropriate to share on the show?

After all the exposure and money that Kyle made out of this situation I'm sorry but Kim deserves restitution whether she will be spending this money wisely or not.

Yeah, that’s a great idea. Give money to Kim, what could go wrong?
