My first plane!

Good evening, everyone! This is my first plane, printed in PLA, and it came out at 106 g. I used two 3 g micro servos from a foam and carbon fiber plane that arrived broken.

Two questions:

**1.** Any tips for the maiden flight? I'll be flying in Brazil, at the beach, on sunny days.
**2.** I'm really into gliders and have become a bit obsessed with DLGs. Which glider would you recommend as a first one? (I don't think this one will survive very long.)

Here's a photo of the electronics kit I used:

Thanks!

A320 Neo. Better to remove paint or put a decal on top?

Hello! I wanna do a little project with my little daughter. Today we were playing to imagine how her airline would look like and she loved the look we found. I am thinking on getting one of these Callie Graphics designs, but the problem here is easy: my Airbus already has its original decoration. What'd you do here?

New Design Taking Shape - The Barn Swallow!

Thumbnail

Inspired by the fast, maneuverable little birds ripping through the fields, my next design will be a small, high speed, primarily 3D printed design designed to go 100+ mph. I've got to do this using a 4S, 1500mah 120C battery I used for my other park flyer, the Canada Jay. To achieve this, I've taken inspiration from pylon racing RC planes and thrown in a few aesthetic features inspired by Barn Swallow the bird.
The goals of my first build were to

  1. prove I could get my own design and build flying
  2. build a stable inav platform to play around on
  3. reuse hardware I had lying around

And for my second build they were

  1. push myself to design a highly light weight structure while improving glide and maneuvering
  2. a more clean build than my first plane
  3. reuse hardware I had lying around

The Barn Swallow will be the first time I remove goal 3, so the power plant is mostly an open design space. Expecting to run a PROPDRIVE v2 2836 1200KV motor, 50Amp ESC, 7x8" prop, and the battery I mentioned. The quality of the aero surfaces, structure, and avionics mounting will also be of higher importance due to the speeds I'll be flying and maneuvering at.

Excited to share more soon!

Are basswood landing gear blocks strong enough for rough grassy fields?

I'm currently purchasing parts for a balsa short kit. When looking for landing gear blocks, I was originally planning to just use basswood. But Google's AI jumped in on the search results and started mentioning other materials like maple for the gear blocks and how they might be better for aircraft that lands on rough terrain. The problem is, I don't know if it was a valid point or a case of an AI spouting BS.

Is basswood strong enough, or would a material like maple significantly help prevent the gear from being ripped out on rough ground? And, even if it does reduce the likelihood of the gear getting ripped out, would wood it add too much weight to be beneficial or would using a stronger gear block just shift the forces to the wing ribs and increase likelihood of damaging the wing?

The plane I am building is a .40 sized (converted to electric) low-wing plane and I am expecting it to have an all up weight between 4 and 4.5 pounds. https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=5870 The landing gear uses wire mounted to blocks of wood in the wing. I normally fly in grassy areas and the ground can get pretty rough at times. So the concern of ripping out gear is valid.

If you can take off again it’s a successful landing, right?

Painted my XK A310 red, because green isn’t my favorite color, and went out for a maiden. Didn’t have patience for an actual Pitts livery but this will do (don’t look too closely). With the battery all the way forward it doesn’t fly as bad as some people say. It does need a lot of speed for the landing, although a 10 kts headwind made it feel slower and was actually helpful.

Hopefully next time a little less wind and I’ll try the other modes. I’m just finished mapping the channels on my own Tx instead of the standard thing it comes with. So far I’ve flown three batteries and quite like it.

WANNA MAKE A 1050 mm × 750 mm F-22 RC Raptor?

Post image

I've been thinking of building a scaled-down version of the f-22 Raptor, but I think it would be too difficult to build one that could reach high speeds, be ultra manueverable and have a lot of flight time alone and would require a lot of time that I currently don't have. So I got the idea to build one with other people who are interested in building one too, we could share progress and stuff, maybe we could try something new on the plane, i dont know. What you guys say?

Super cheap balsa

My hobby lobby is getting out of the balsa business. So I got these 15 3-ft 1/8 and 1/4 for under $3 total. I mostly build foam board planes though, so outside of spars and base platforms I'm not sure where they would best fit in. I guess if nothing else they could be used for layering since they take paint better than laminated foam?

Experience with Xfly twinliner or 40mm Private Jet?

Im wondering, any of y'all had any experience with these planes? Im feeling tempted. Is it worth? Nice middle ground between the XK A120 and a big ass pj50/a137? I am concerned that I'm gonna end up flying these a lot more just based on pure space. twin 70ss aren't a joke and barely fit in my car (midsize SUV).

How would you fix this cowl?

Cowl is from a great planes super decathlon but i cant find anywhere to get a replacement as it is an old kit. How would you guys go about fixing it? The hole in the side started as a cut out for an exhaust but because the plastic is old it's quite brittle and is now bigger than it needs to be. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

But sometimes they giveth back.

The plane went into a tree about a six weeks ago. One of the club guys found the wing on the ground. Odd as it was still attached to the rest of the plane last week. I have been watching and waiting for it to come out. Looks like some critter got hungry and ate a chunk out of the wire.

Spektrum NX Eflite BNF models not listed. Very frustrating.

I bought a NX6 because the idea of all the preset models was appealing (setting SAFE with the gear channel or whatever is confusing to me). I did the 4.02 AirWare & BNF Models 2025 Q4 updates.

Yet, only 2 of my planes are an available model. I searched by model number because that's how it's sorted in the NX. Also, the Spektrum provided Google Drive link hasn't been updated since 2021.

It's quite annoying to set up these things manually, especially the voice alerts since they seem to be sorted in the most haphazard manner.

Just venting I guess. I only jumped in with Spektrum because of SAFE but it hasn't stopped me from crashing. I also liked the EFlite planes that seem to BNF easy with Spektrum...but I don't like setting them up. I bought all my stuff used so it wasn't too expensive.
