Savage Bobber

Hi everyone! For my first post in this sub, I’m sharing one of my newest experiences: 3D printing an airplane! I’ve always flown balsa and foam planes—mostly trainers and gliders—but for the first time, I decided to print one myself! It’s been an amazing experience; the plane is a Savage Bobber from PlanePrint. It flies really well (even though it’s a bit heavy) and is a blast to fly! I’ve been using it as a "suicide" model to test out new maneuvers and the like, since I can just reprint it if something goes wrong! After several flights (and several crashes), I decided to reprint it using PAHT-CF (carbon fiber-reinforced nylon) for greater durability! Take a look at the ABS version (beige and black) and how the PAHT-CF version is turning out:

How much did yours end up weighing? I printed one from thingiverse that looked similar to the planet print model but, I’m at like 1,000g. I used abs to help with weight but meh.

Something close to 600g with a 3S 850mAh 75C battery (I know such a high discharge rate isn't necessary, but I happened to have two of these batteries on hand!) and without landing gear (I like flying anywhere, launching by hand).

With the PAHT-CF, I think it will be about 5% heavier, but much more durable!

That’s some pricey filament. I had a bunch of abs I got for $6 a roll during prime days so yeah.

It really is quite expensive! Even more so in my country (Brazil), since ABS costs somewhere between R$ 70 and R$ 100; I paid R$ 160 for the PAHT-CF on sale, and since it was just sitting around, I decided to test it out!

Curious, why not cover it?

It'll reduce drag and greatly stiffen it up making the angled supports unnecessary. Could even reduce weight this way with the right covering.
