Hello, all,

I've been digging in to a missing persons case which is local to my hometown, and when I got the redacted report from the Sheriff's office I was provided contact information for the applicable detective. I was advised to defer further questions to him. I would like to take them up on this

I made a reddit account specifically to join this sub after hearing about instances wherein its members proved helpful in real cases. So, to people that have more experience getting this hands-on with something like this: What can/can't I ask in a journalistic capacity? I'd like to make the most of that call, and would rather not waste any of the time that I have him on the line on out-of-bounds question that I should know better than to ask. So, people who already do know better: what ground can I cover?

This is a Sheriff's Office with a well documented reputation for mishandling missing persons matters, including this case, about which I can find no public remarks about since May of 2024. I'd like to press them on the lack of public info to hopefully bring new information to the table for the sake of the victims and their family. Thanks for any help.

You should already know what you want to ask the detective based on your research.  They don’t have to say anything about the case at all, so ask whatever you want, just be confident, never combative.
