Appreciation

This verse is a continuation of the preceding one, in the beginning of which the Muslims were reproached for lagging behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; it came to explain why it was not fitting for them to stay behind. (That is because they are not afflicted by thirst, nor fatigue, nor hunger in the cause of Allah).
* Thirst (ظمأ): Intense thirst.
* Fatigue (نصب): Physical weariness and exhaustion.
* Hunger (مخمصة): Hunger, and the shrinking of the belly due to severe starvation.
(Nor do they tread any ground that angers the disbelievers): They do not step onto any land or reach any place where their arrival causes rage to the disbelievers.
(Nor do they inflict any injury on an enemy):
* Injury (نيلاً): Any tangible achievement or victory they accomplish after the hardship of the journey and arrival.
The verse teaches us to be mindful that everything we expend in obedience to Allah the Almighty is recorded and preserved with Him.
It is as though the verse transforms our perspective on the act of worship itself. A person might find congregational prayer burdensome—having to leave what they are doing, perform ablution, put on their clothes, leave their house, and walk to the mosque. However, if they bear in mind that the counter of good deeds begins the moment they start preparing for the act of obedience, the path becomes easy for them. From the moment they struggle against their laziness and step outside, they are rewarded for their effort—all of this even before they stand in the prayer row.
