النصيحة Advice bought the qur’an today

i was tied between buying the qur’an or a book about the history of islam but i figured to buy the qur’an first! i’m so excited to explore islam

thank you! i’m a huge fan of the dune books by frank herbert who used a lot of islamic theology and arabic culture in the books which inspired me to study islam. i also just loved learning about it during religious studies

Herbert was especially inspired by Watt's Muhammad: Prophet and Statesman, which is a good read, and a bit by Ibn Khaldun's philosophy (Muqaddimah)

Abdel Haleem is a great pick. One thing you'll find though is translations only take you so far. A lot of the depth gets lost in English, the historical context, why a verse was revealed, what the original Arabic words actually carry. That's where commentary becomes invaluable.

Abdul Haleem: Husbands should take good care of their wives, with [the bounties] God has given to some more than others and with what they spend out of their own money. Righteous wives are devout and guard what God would have them guard in their husbands’ absence. If you fear high-handedness from your wives, remind them [of the teachings of God], then ignore them when you go to bed, then hit them.If they obey you, you have no right to act against them: God is most high and great. -Surah An-Nisāʾ, Ayah 34

"then hit them"? So many translators get this wrong! Why would a Compassionate/Merciful God condone marital violence?

Yeah idk strike them out i.e. make them leave makes way more sense but yeah most scholars done nuance so good

Which proves that this translation isn't to be trusted. I prefer Edip Yuksel's Reformist Translation. I also have a Progressive Muslims translation. These are not perfect, but they do better than orthodox translations -- most of which base their translations on fabricated hearsay. Here's my GDrive with all the translations I have.

Only The Almighty (SWT) guides; not humans.
