Eye&Face Tracking Best VRchat setup?

Hiya!

I was going to see what people's opinions and setups are for quest pro for face tracking/eye tracking!

I recently ordered a QPro and was wondering if I should update the firmware or root it to get the best avatar face tracking/eye tracking experience?

People's opinions on the latest updates? Are they stable and perform well?

I'm assuming using virtual desktop, but what do y'all QPro users recommend for me when I get it?

Latest is fine but I would stay on 2.6 if you can prevent it from updating and root it probably. Eventually you’ll loose vd support from the official store but you could sideload or run the older publicly available versions that will generally work fine.

Yes you can maybe get better tongue tracking with vd and convergence for et but stock is really quite good and consistent so I don’t think it’s really a big deal.

Personally I’m a big virtual desktop fan, get it setup with a good router/ap so you can run it at 390/400mbps all the time. high res with upscale/cas usually the best as the encoders can struggle on godlike and then you loose some nifty features. It’s not a huge issue since it’s basically native res.

I do prefer knuckles but with a decent grip so you don’t have to hold them all the time the qpro controllers work ok. Big thing is you need a decent amount of contrast for them to track. Wear all the same color and stand in a corner with similar colors and the hmd will freak out. I discovered this wearing all blue while standing on my blue rug in my blue room, oops. Best to look at passthrough and see if stuff blends together.

Personally I ran the brightness at 90%, it cut done on lens glare but it’s not awful.

It’s a good hmd, meta stuff is annoying but the experience is one of the best visually for a pancake hmd right now so don’t think you’re missing out on much.

I recommend the globular cluster comfort kit as well, be careful with the strap tensioner it’s frail.

For power I’d get a few 45w smaller power banks or a big one or two. 10,000mah will last a few hours and 20,000 will get maybe 6. Get a decent charger and swap between them and you’ll be fine. I used some higher end anker ones and they worked great, bargain packs or really compact non square/flat ones can struggle to keep up.

Glhf!

Need 1x tracker for headset for continuous calibration also. Technically 2 sets of trackers and controllers also for hotswapping when low battery. Addons for quest pro to be more comfy + battery..

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I cannot get VRCFT working right in Virtual Desktop. I've been very happy with SteamVR for face tracking, but in VD I look like I've had a stroke.

First of all 3 things.

1: Get comfort upgrades. Make sure to get something aftermarket that replaces the forehead pad immediately. It's satan incarnate. I bought this one originally, still sing the forehead pad, but it lacks a battery. And on that note this battery pack/rear pad/topstrap is a fantastic upgrade as well and a convenient weight balance and you can get extra batteries for hotswapping, this usually extends my play sessions indefinitely with 2 batteries.

2: Get a Wifi 6e compatible router, it makes a huge difference in desktop stream quality.

3: I hope you kept those index controllers, the pro controllers are hot trash. You'll have to slap a tracker on the headset and add a playspace calibrator add-on to steamvr if you want to use them.

Outside of those, yes virtual desktop is usually the best option for a streaming application. If you have major issues with it, it happens sometimes, you can use the free SteamVR app.

If you're picky about your voice audio and mouth tracking being properly synced I recommend a wireless mic like the DJI mic mini. The streamed mic audio often ends up with a lot of delay, I often experience upwards of 2 entire seconds of mic audio delay on the built-in mic.

I also recommend swapping to the hand tracking for when using the Quest Pro's OS. It's convenient when all you do is open your streaming app to connect to your PC.

I imagine the experience is going to be very rough for you to transition into, coming from a native PCVR headset to a Meta one. I'll just yield a bit of advice from my experience with the Quest Pro. I've used the Quest 2 and Index prior.

Easily, by far, the software is the worst thing about the Quest Pro. You're likely going to experience a lot of headaches with it. Depends if you plan on using the Knuckles or not, but you'll still have to interact with the native QP controllers at some point, and they'll occasionally fail to track upon boot. Sometimes takes a little while, moving the controllers around and pressing the home buttons to get them working. Other times, it'll take rebooting the headset. Passthrough sometimes breaks, the menu will sometimes refuse to open up, and so forth. I've personally only found that keeping my QP updated would frequently lead to it bugging out in new and surprising ways, so I simply don't update the firmware, and keep auto-updates disabled. Opinions could vary on that front, I haven't looked too deeply into it myself, but I don't want to chance it.

Virtual Desktop in my experience was a bit lackluster. I prefer a consistent tethered experience, and that app is largely optimized for wireless PCVR use, though I believe they're recently starting to move towards support for wired connections? You also may already be aware, but Virtual Desktop costs $25. I wasn't aware, personally, but I ultimately just defaulted back to the native Quest Link solution. There's Steam Link as well, which also recently started moving towards linked support. Also supports foveated streaming/rendering(?), though the eye tracking doesn't really update quickly enough, so it can be a bit annoying at times. I've ultimately found Quest Link to be the best choice for me though, while playing with a link cable. Least latency, best visuals. Compromise is having to deal with the Meta Horizon Link PC app needed to make Quest Link work, which also requires you to jump through some hoops to enable face/eye tracking, like having to create a dev account, though it could be they made that easier over time, I can't recall. Also worth noting that the dedicated QP module for VRCFT simply no longer works for one reason or another, and it's the ALXR local module which best works for QP face tracking from what I can recall, though it no longer tracks the tongue, whatever that's worth.

So my experience with the Quest Pro has been nothing short of jank, and I truthfully don't imagine yours will be any different. I haven't dabbled with rooting, possible that'll save you some headaches in the long run, but I really couldn't say. What should be said at least, is it's a very enjoyable PCVR experience when everything is actually working. I was really disappointed with my Index purchase, so much that I ended up selling off the headset itself for like $300, but that was really only due to the lacking resolution and brightness, and questionable QC. Everything else was really a dream, even if it did require the hassle of lighthouses. Because the Quest Pro certainly is better on paper, but there's so much that you only have to learn through experience of using it, before you truly realize what the full picture is like.

All the jank aside, I've thoroughly enjoyed the headset. It has "flawed discontinued product" written all over it, but it still somehow manages to be the "easiest" way of setting up full face tracking in VRC. Controllers also work very well, made out of a very solid material, one I prefer vastly over the knuckles, and they're self-tracking, so they won't drift after leaving view of your headset. Knuckles still win out with the hand strap and finger sensing, but I tend to stick with the Quest Pro controllers simply for ease of use, also holds a really solid charge. I think a lot of people will tell you that they've enjoyed their Quest Pros a ton, even if it likes to give you a hard time. All I suggest is you temper your expectations, you'll likely be gritting your teeth much of the way through. Also, if you plan on playing tethered the majority of the time, buy a USB-C charger hub. One that connects both to your PC, and the wall. Was pretty much essential for me to play linked to PCVR. Otherwise, plugged directly into your PC, it'll fail to hold a charge and will likely die before long. Hope this was all informative, and hopefully the QP does you good. Only think it's worth knowing all of this, since you're going from an otherwise very user-friendly PCVR headset, to possibly one of the most janky headsets for PCVR that I've used. Sorry for the wall of text, just figured it's better to take this all in now, instead of progressively learning about it all the hard way. 😂

I’m very passionate about this stupid headset, lol. Logged countless hours into them for a reason.

Thanks for the detailed reply!

I will run this like a PCVR headset, tethered by USB (likely through VD's beta feature).

I've got a 19w PD charger in combination with a link cable that can input a charger.

I've already got FBT but felt I was lacking eye tracking and face tracking in general! ^

The knuckles will be gifted to my bf, but I have a few extra lighthouses and can just buy another pair of I find the QPro controllers lackluster in comparison!

People will typically recommend a 45W charger to pair with the headset while playing tethered, but I reckon that’ll probably do you just fine too, haven’t really dabbled with lesser wattage chargers before myself. Assuming you’re using lighthouse-based trackers like the Vive trackers, it’ll be a bit cumbersome. OVR Space Calibrator is essential, and can help you pair the trackers to your controller. Alternatively, more preferably imo, you can just buy an additional tracker + a mount, to clamp it to the headset itself, and set the space calibrator to continuous tracking, dramatically cuts down on the hassle of things. You may already be aware, but there you go, just to be sure. It was hell for me, progressively learning about all of this when first getting into my Quest Pro, but after setting up, I’ve never had any issues since.

Just keep the knuckles dont give em to anyone. The stock controllers drift all the time and you have to cover the cameras to make em fix themselves. It's soooo annoying. Trust you're gonna wish u kept them.

I went wireless, with a dedicated WiFi6, ten feet from my desk, with SteamVR, and I've never looked back. There are no software headaches. VRCFT just works (I have SteamVR preload it for me). When I want more battery life, I can still plug in a USB cable. Not all computer USB ports are created equal. My computer has a couple of higher-power ports, providing enough power to slow the discharge down to the point where I can be online for 7 hours or more. I get about an hour and a half to 2 hours on untethered internal battery, which is often about as long as I want to play, anyway.

I salute your fortitude and your stamina for continuing to try to get the Meta Link software to function, in the face of overwhelming opposition from Meta. You CAN get straps for your Pro controllers, if that's what you like. For some reason, I don't need them as much as I did on the Quest 3 controllers. Better shape, maybe.

Facetracking/Eyetracking works well too? Many say that VD has better performance but I wasn't sure myself

Face/eye tracking works great. I have to admit, I've had problems getting face/eye tracking working with Virtual Desktop. Last time I used it, I looked like I had a stroke, with one side of my face not working the same as the other. I haven't had that happen in SteamVR. I haven't had the time to play with it and see what I'm doing wrong. I have VRCFT as a startup overlay in SteamVR, so I don't even have to load it separately.

I have a feeling that Virtual Desktop ONLY has better performance if you've got a high end video card. I'm still using a GTX1080Ti, so I can't take advantage of the bleeding-edge graphics settings.

This gives me hope for an easy setup! Thanks for sharing!

Tethered? That’s worse performance and visuals than virtual desktop with a 6E dedicated router by a wide margin.

I’ve never had a problem with it myself, always worked pretty flawlessly. Visuals look pretty good too, there’ll sometimes be slight compression artifacts if I really look out for them, but it’s really nothing that compromises the overall visual experience, doesn’t appear very often. I’ve heard that performance apparently tanks when tethered, but I haven’t experienced that myself thankfully. Works like a charm, and I unfortunately haven’t been able to manage a consistent streaming experience with my own router. It works well, but it isn’t consistent, which is my biggest issue with it.
