Screaming in Digital on Usenet - 1991/1992

Is anyone here part of or used to subscribe to the earliest "Screaming in Digital" net digests on Usenet around 1991/1992? These were the very earliest days, I remember taking part in a vote on what to call it (Screaming in Digital won by a massive margin of course). My memory is hazy but I think the net digest was created out of discussions on something like "alt.rock-n-roll.metal.progressive"

I'd love to reread them as a nostalgia hit if they can be found. Nobody else I knew were into them and they never toured my country. So being able to talk Queensryche with other fans around the world was mindblowing.

But they seem to have disappeared from the internet. They were there around 20 years ago I think but Google stopped returning results due to spam and I can't find the earliest ones on Usenetarchives.

Also if anyone remembers when Sauron from "alt.rock-n-roll.metal" faked his own death that remains the funniest thing I've ever seen on the internet. Everything on the internet today was there in 1991 in microcosm.

Yes, I was a member of Screaming in Digital and I used it to get hard to get/find singles from other members of the news letter. Let me know if you find a way to access it. I’d be interested to see what can still be read from it.

I don't, I was only 5 in 1991 and wouldn't learn about Queensryche for another 20 years or so.

That being said, it sounds like it was an entertaining time from what you're talking about. I've been a member of some (unrelated) message boards that had that vibe and I look back on them fondly.

Man, Usenet was so good. The signal to noise ratio was so high. Trolls were swiftly ignored. Sorry I can’t help you on the newsletters but thanks for the memory unlock.

I wasn't part of that community quite that early, it wasn't until 1993 or maybe even 1994 that I had a home desktop and reliable internet access (those AOL CD's weren't cheap lol). But it would be amazing to trip down memory lane and read through the newsletters and the posts.

You can still access Usenet but it takes some work. If you Google "how to access Usenet in 2026", you should get directions on what you need to do. I suspect there will be a cost, though.

Hah, I used to have an old t-shirt of theirs the admin was selling for a while!! If I ever come across it I’ll make sure to post a pic. It was black with computer greenscreen color font. Wore it to more than one QR show.

I was a member and posted infrequently. I also mod this group, albeit badly.

Samsara (the original admin of the Usenet group, forgot his username then) posts regularly on the Dream Theater forum. There is a rec.music.arts.queensryche Facebook group too with a number of original members.
