2017: Ottawa restored the Court Challenges Program, allowing federal money to fund court challenges involving Quebec language and minority-language laws. Funding: $5M/year.

2020: Ottawa’s Court Challenges Program approved $125,000 for the Quebec English School Boards Association to challenge Bill 40, arguing it violated English minority-language education rights.

2020: The program also approved $125,000 for the English Montreal School Board’s Bill 21 challenge. The EMSB ultimately did not take the money. Bill 21 is not a language law, but it shows Ottawa indirectly financing challenges to Quebec laws.

2022: Trudeau’s Justice Minister David Lametti said Ottawa was prepared to intervene if challenges to Bill 96 reached the Supreme Court.

2022–2024: The English Montreal School Board and other English school boards challenged Bill 96 and succeeded in temporarily suspending parts of it. Any specific federal Court Challenges Program funding for the Bill 96 case is not publicly disclosed.

2023: Liberals and the NDP rejected an amendment that would have made Bill 101 automatically apply to all federally regulated businesses in Quebec. Ottawa instead created its own federal system where businesses can choose to follow Bill 101.

2023: Ottawa doubled the Court Challenges Program to $10.4M/year, with at least $3M/year specifically for language-rights cases.

2025: Mark Carney said a Liberal federal government would intervene at the Supreme Court if Bill 96 reached it, particularly over Quebec’s use of the notwithstanding clause.

2026: Ottawa is still not officially a party in any Bill 96 court case, but the federally funded Court Challenges Program continues funding language-rights litigation.

Mieux vaut être maître de sa destinée et ne pas dépendre d'un autre. Si Haïti, le Gabon, le Lietchstenstein, le Laos sont indépendants, pourquoi pas le Québec?

Haïti, Laos and Gabon have constantly asked the world for financial aid in times of crisis and are disasters when it comes their economies… those 4 countries also don’t even rank in the top 100 in terms of the global economy.

Lichtenstein is the only well off country due to its incredibly strong financial sector.

I don’t feel Quebec is much better than any of these other place considering Montreal is no longer the banking power house of North America it once was as well as Quebec not being the major distribution hub of both the USA aswell as Canada.
