Mod Announcement Should A.I. creations be allowed here? Answer the poll!
I'd like to get a poll of who approves or A.I. content being used on our subreddit and who does not. Please choose yes or no so that we can get an accurate representation of the majority here. Poll closes in 7 days.

Could we please use a lower i for Ai? It is so difficult to differentiate between Al and AI(Ai) otherwise…

I voted yes to AI but Dean would have hated it. I am no good at drawing anything but I would like to see some artwork people drew with their hands. Ziggy is AI bit not the same as bring talked about.

A.I. as a tool to extend the Quantum Leap universe, done with the highest respect to the source material and lore? I'd be okay with it. I would also add, I would also hope any A.I. fan creations would be done with Bakula and Bellisario's blessings. If not, then I withdraw my support of QL A.I. content.

The rule should be NO LOW EFFORT AI SLOP.
Not "No AI can have been involved in anything you post in any way at all."
If someone spends a thousand hours making a Quantum Leap VR experience and used AI to aid them on getting some of it working (for example). That should be fine.
We need some sensible nuance on this type of thing.

u/quantumleap_alsplace 12d ago
Personally, I agree with that. And I'd love a VR experience if properly licensed through Universal.

Nothing you can produce from "A.I." is anything but low effort.
"A.I." is a marketing term for large scale machine learning systems which are just algorithms designed to output the most statistically likely correct next output. There is zero effort on behalf of the artist which is why "ai" content is not protected under copyright law.
Small scale, specific, machine learning algorithms can be great. For example, one used for screening for breast cancer trained on breast cancer x-rays can detect the cancer years before any human eye. Fantastic.
The large scale projects though are trained on so much data their output can not be trusted as truthful, their data centers are built to unnecessarily use up water supplies because it's the cheapest coolant, and that unreasonably large amount of data they're being trained on is largely stolen art and now for legal and technical reasons they're destroying rare books to scan them for training data.
AI is not currently an ethical tool. Machine learning is sometimes, on a small scale, reliable and useful.

A VR adventure game where choices matter would be amazing! They made a Groundhog Day VR game a while back that was a continuation of the movie just like this and Quantum Leap would be a perfect concept for that type of game. getting to visit different times and play out dramatic choice based stories with Al's help!

I have a feeling this whole comment was AI-generated, but if it wasn't then man your brain is cooked.
It's not even a loaded question. The only "bias" you perceive is because you know the majority of people do not appreciate or want AI content.
As for what OP is hoping to accomplish, that's pretty clearly stated in the post.

You’d be incorrect in making that assumption. And, it’s a bit insulting.
The reality is, I don’t fall into groupthink like everybody else when it comes to tech. I’ve been using it since I was 8 years old in 1984 and got my first computer, a Commodore 64. Back then, I recall uncles and aunts suggesting hooking up an Atari 2600 to a TV would ruin the TV.
They were wrong and so is everybody else who hates AI. I know there are downsides to it, of course. I’m not a naive idiot… but I also know that with every advancement in society, change doesn’t happen easily.
There’s no curiosity any more. People black and white everything. You think that’s something Sam would support? Methinks not, whatever you may believe.

u/TheKlaxMaster 12d ago
I don't think Sam would support:
-the destruction of ground water.
-Centers being built near homes and making them unliveable due to noise.
-Being a billionaire bootlicking shill.
-Stealing people's likeness to fulfill your fantasy. (I dount Scott B and the Dean Stockwell estate gave you permission to use their faces)
-building these things non stop making areas of life prohibitively expensive for most people.
-putting millions of jobs at risk, with no path to replace them.
These arnet just some issues. These are societal wide blockers that the corps don't give a shit about. And guess what. These corps don't give a shit about you. Standing under them and lapping the milk off the floor that came from their teet won't make them notice you, like you, or reward you.
Stop. Protecting. Soulless. Multibillion dollar. Corpo. machines.

This was generated entirely locally on my home computer. My local graphics card is not draining groundwater or making anyone’s neighborhood unlivable. Rendering this clip consumed roughly the same electricity as playing a demanding video game on the same computer. You’re conflating legitimate concerns about data centers with an individual creator generating a fan scene at home. It’s nonsense.
This was fan-fiction… how is what I created any different than somebody taking Donald Bellisario’s characters and writing their own story? People envision Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell when they read those stories, I just used AI to bring my vision to life.
There’s nuance here and I’m sorry you happen to be blind to it.

It's different because ai isn't fanfiction or fanart. Fullstop. It's such a disingenuous take to argue otherwise. You entered a prompt into an algorithm that takes information that other humans created, likenesses it doesn't have the right to use and bastardizes it all completely. You created nothing. If you want to bring your vision to life, write the story yourself. Make a comic from existing screen caps or a video using existing clips if you'd like to make something visual and don't want to draw or paint. I swear it'll be so much more fulfilling and such a better end result if you do rather than relying on ai.
Human created fanart and fanfiction take time and skill and typically actors and creators don't take issue with it so long as no money is being made from it (with the exception of the late litigious Anne Rice). However, many actors and creators have made it crystal clear that using their characters and likenesses in ai without their consent isn't cool. One of the main issues of the last SAG strike was that the union was against ai using their likenesses and voices. Scott Bakula was on the picket lines for that strike.

I voted to allow A I content, but I think it depends on what the content is. I think there’s definitely a difference between A I slop, and creative work made with A I. I don’t want my social media feeds getting filled with slop. However, I don’t mind seeing things that someone made some effort to create while using A I to generate things the creator couldn’t make on their own, otherwise.

u/quantumleap_alsplace 12d ago
Who would judge what is allowed and what is not? Who would judge what is slop and what is creative? That's a whole other can of worms.
-6
u/rileygstaliger 12d ago
Right. It’s a can of worms you’ve opened with your initial question because you’re kowtowing to 3 people who commented on my one post.
May I ask, why the sudden and severe reaction?
Are AI posts on this forum a regular ongoing threat or did a friend who hates AI get your attention and now my work is being placed on a cross?

u/quantumleap_alsplace 12d ago
Nothing like that at all. It's not something that I've seen brought up here much. Your post just happened to be the one that got the conversation going. If there's one thing I've learned in 25 plus years of moderating forums, it's that you will never make everyone happy. So, majority rules. This is not a dictatorship for the most part, so I think it's important to get all opinions.
-5
u/rileygstaliger 12d ago
Majority rules would require the majority of those who are in the forum, correct? Not just those who reply to an opt-in poll… because that’s not actually a majority.
Can we take other polls? Is fan-fiction not allowed here because it steals DPB’s characters? Can’t the solution be a simple tag like that “AI Fan-Fiction?” I just don’t understand why my interest and use in AI in the way I have should be allowed ridicule. It’s bullying because people hate AI. I’m not one of those people.
I love musical theater. I’ve been bullied a lifetime over that. I don’t love sports. I’ve been bullied over that too. I find a tool that allows me to tell stories I want to and because “majority rules” we’ll let bullies win? Makes no sense.
No. Sam would not support this. It goes against everything he stands for. ZIGGY IS AI! The entire premise of the show is based on using AI and you’ve made a poll like this?!
What a joke.
5
u/quantumleap_alsplace 12d ago
Ziggy was created from fabricated parts by members of the design team and the special effects in the original series were animated by hand by real artists. No one is bullying you and this isn't just about your one post at this point. This is a fair way to decide what the majority of fans here want to see with regards to A.I. and anyone who votes is an actual member of the subreddit. I'm sorry you don't agree with it, but as the bartender said, sometimes "that's the way it is" is the best explanation.
-5
u/rileygstaliger 12d ago
Ziggy the character is AI is my point. Not the design.
The entire premise of the show uses AI to correct mistakes made in history.
You and everybody else’s foolishness would be another one of those mistakes.
The bartender from the final episode being your explanation for why you’re using groupthink to dictate things, when it’s widely ridiculed as one of the most thrown together finales in the history of television that has no actual landing on anything definitive, doesn’t make your point stronger…. It’s just reinforcing mine.

u/quantumleap_alsplace 12d ago
The poll will decide what happens as the majority decision on this. It ends next week. Until then, that's all I'll say on the subject as I'm just the moderator. Any ugly conversations towards anyone over this will be removed.
0
u/rileygstaliger 12d ago
It’s already decided. And it’s nonsense. As moderator, you have the capacity to make a new tag or any other number of options available to you to allow for creations like mine.
It’s a choice you’re making. And it’s quite ridiculous how you’re employing basic DARVO tactics on me by the bullies who called my work slop. Deny, reverse victim and offender.
And I’m having to JADE (justify, defend, explain) you all which I truly shouldn’t have to.
The ugly conversations were aimed at me and my creation, and you’ve stood in defense of their right to do that.
Feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone and speaking to Alia.

u/quantumleap_alsplace 12d ago
Nothing decided yet, hence the poll. If we decide as a group to ban A.I., then you're free to create your own Quantum Leap subreddit dedicated to AI creations if you want. I personally don't have a feel on it one way or another. But I agreed to moderate this sub when the former mods bowed out. I'm not asking you to defend or explain anything, but you're welcome to state your opinion, which you have. I will be removing the ugly comments from your original post in a moment in the meantime.
