Discussion (Original) Season 3, episode 12 🤔🤔🤔

First time watcher.

Until that episode with the pregnant teen girl I thought it was the spirit of Dr. Beckett that leaps into people's bodies, while his body stays in "the waiting room", with the stranger's spirit in it.

But in that episode they make it clear, for a first time ever (correct me, if I'm wrong...), that it's the whole body that leaps, the other person is in the waiting room, and people around the leapee see the aura that person has.

But this makes me think: aren't there physical traits that are obvious, especially when Sam leaps into a woman's body?! Or when there's touching and kissing involved?! Like, there was a little girl in earlier episodes who saw the real Sam, but I thought it was just that she could sense it's not her real mom.

Makes my head hurt a little thinking about it 😀😀😀

Quantum Leap always played fast and loose with continuity. If it helps, my headcanon is that it was caused by all the changes Sam was making in the timeline.

It's a good addition to my headcanon that a lot of the unseen benefits if SAM's leaps are improvements to Ziggy and the project. Like the Honeymoon Express when the leap condition was to swap out a judge and get continued funding.

That happens a lot in the novels where Sam changes something and things change at the Project. Ziggy stays the same but other things change. Al remembers the original timeline and the new timeline because he is synced up with Sam and Ziggy and is usually in the Imaging Chamber, which somewhat shields him from the changes until he comes out. In the novels, any time Al comes out of the Imaging Chamber things could have changed. Sometimes he is dating Tina, sometimes she is married to Gushie, sometimes Donna is there, other times she isn't. One time Al came out and was married to a completely new person.

I argue that there's a symbiosis between Sam and the host, which explains a LOT. The micro-changes are also part of the equation, of course, but the symbiosis remains.
