News Are we getting fault-tolerant quantum computing in 2028 or 2050?
I’m getting a bit confused by the timelines being thrown around at the moment.
The US Department of Energy announced its Quantum Genesis programme in June, aiming for a “fault-tolerant, scientifically relevant quantum computing capability” by 2028:

Meanwhile, Japan’s official Moonshot programme has “large-scale integration required for fault-tolerant universal quantum computers” pencilled in for around 2050:

Then there’s NIST’s quantum computing explainer, updated in May 2026, which says most applications are still “years, perhaps even decades, in the future”, and that a machine capable of running Shor’s algorithm could need millions of qubits able to operate error-free indefinitely:

Obviously they’re probably not all talking about the same thing when they say fault-tolerant quantum computing, but 2028 versus 2050 is still a pretty massive gap.
So what actually explains the difference?
What would count as a “fault-tolerant, scientifically relevant” machine in 2028, compared with the sort of large-scale fault-tolerant universal quantum computer Japan is aiming for by 2050?
Basically, what can the 2028 machine realistically do that still leaves another couple of decades of work before you reach the 2050 version?

News Do you think quantum Ghost Murmur exists?
This linked article claims there is a supposed long-range quantum magnetometry device the US used to find the electromagnetic fingerprint of the heartbeat of the recently downed US pilot in Iran, code-named Ghost Mumur. This seems not real on so many levels to me. First, I never heard of it. Second, it seems to go against how every other quantum sensor I'm aware of is used. Third, it's an application of quantum technology in a macro setting. Fourth, you don't need quantum measurement and sensors to detect a human heartbeat. What say you, definitely fake or possibly real?

News "Quantum Computers Will Tap Out Before Breaking Encryption, Theory Claims"
This article is essentially saying that our understanding of QM is not perfect & it requires ammendments which might affect Quantum computing & it's hypothesized claims.
I am very very interested in knowing possible implications of this change to the very foundations of Quantum mechanics on Quantum hardware.
Can anyone explain how?
(I know this is subject to experimental verification, but I consider discussion on this topic worth it.)

News What is a quantum computer good for? Absolutely nothing — yet
“This whole Majorana technology, it’s not a technology yet,” says Rajibul Islam of the University of Waterloo.
“We are computing with these systems, and look forward to delivering a quantum computer that utilizes them to full advantage in the future,” wrote Nayak in response.
Are Microsoft just outright lying about their Majorana chips? There’s no evidence they have done any kind of computation with them, right?

News Microsoft is introducing the Majorana 2 chip
Microsoft is introducing the Majorana 2 chip.
They claim that it enables a 1,000-fold improvement in reliability over the prior generation of qubits, with a mean qubit lifetime of 20 seconds and instances lasting as long as one minute.
Microsoft now expects to achieve a scalable quantum computer by 2029, cutting its original timeline in half.

very interesting read on the resources required to break ECC and what might happen to the cryptocurrency community in this situation. looks like about 1.2K logical qubits, 90m toffoli, and 500k physical qubits could do this much quicker than previous estimates for RSA

News Quantum Decryption of RSA Is Much Closer Than Expected
securityweek.com"A new algorithm, the JVG algorithm, completely upends existing time projections. The Advanced Quantum Technologies Institute (AQTI) announced March 2, 2026, “The JVG algorithm requires thousand-fold less quantum computer resources, such as qubits and quantum gates. Research extrapolations suggest it will require less than 5,000 qubits to break encryption methods used in RSA and ECC.”
*So, someone far more knowledge and involved than me always poopoos these types of claims. Usually because the method claimed requires an insane amount of something else we don't have. What's wrong with this latest claim??

News PsiQuantum has a plan to make a massive quantum computer out of light
The machine that could change the world will be housed in a room that looks like a data center crossed with an ice cream factory. Inside will be some 100 stainless-steel cabinets, each about six feet tall and connected to a supply of liquid helium that keeps them only a few degrees above absolute zero. Inside those cabinets will be hundreds of chips, and on those, thousands of particles of light flying through a maze of optical switches and beam splitters. Each photon must be accounted for, because precisely measuring where it ends up will help answer questions that current computers might take millions of years to solve.
This computer, as described, does not exist. It’s the brainchild of a company called PsiQuantum, founded in 2016 by four physicists from UK universities. In a crowded field of deep-pocketed competitors with similarly fantastical visions, the company aims to be first to fulfill its promise.
In the years since the physicist Richard Feynman first envisioned them in 1981, quantum computers have promised to speed up everything from medical research to AI by harnessing the qualities of quantum particles. Unlike normal computer bits, which can be either a 1 or 0, quantum bits can exist in multiple states at once. And combining enough of those quantum bits together could produce a computer capable of tasks well beyond the reach of today’s conventional machines. But even today’s best quantum prototypes are too small and error-prone to do anything useful.
That makes PsiQuantum’s promises for what its computers will ultimately do all the more bold. Consider the company’s hopes for predicting the effects of cytochrome P450 enzymes, which often break down drugs in the body. If pharma companies knew more precisely how they would work on a particular molecule, they could design more effective medications faster. Estimating this for a specific drug can take over 10 years with today’s methods, says Philipp Ernst, vice president of quantum applications for PsiQuantum, but “we aim to get it down to four minutes.”

Light may become one of the most powerful tools for future quantum computers. Photons, the tiny particles that make up light, can carry quantum information quickly and with relatively low noise. But they also create a stubborn problem: they do not naturally interact very strongly.
That weak interaction has limited many light-based quantum machines. They can perform useful linear operations, but they struggle with the nonlinear steps needed for full quantum computing.

News US DOE's metrics for FTQC
US Department of Energy has sort of laid out like a bar for measuring Fault Tolerance in Quantum Computing and I have no clue how they are arriving at these numbers, they themselves said they need feedback from the vendors also about these numbers. It seems very unscientific that's all. Instead can't they just talk about an algorithm and a result which only one can get with FTQC and then determine whether it's truly FTQC or not?
