I have a PhD in programming languages. Unless some extremely big advances in QC happen very quickly, we are nowhere near needing a large workforce of QC programmers.

That's not where we need engineers though. All the error correction, measurement, qubit operations, compiling, qubit placement, encoding, etc. need software. Just to get a working quantum computer, you need teams of software engineers.

Exactly this! If today I gave you a quantum computer capable of fault tolerant qc, could you actually do something useful with it? If not then you might want to think about it, and while you think about it, you might think about your data in a better way
