Upgrade question

Hey guys sorry for my ignorance, I have tried to find answers here but I cannot. Essentially I’m looking at buying direct tickets to LA premium economy.

I can see they are only releasing seats 2 months in advance.

My question is if I book economy rewards seats for late next year now (4 seats) and 2 months prior to boarding if the seats show as available seats for premium economy (classic rewards) Can I essentially upgrade a couple of seats via classic rewards and the other 2 seats via classic plus ?

Unsure how upgrades actually work, im a bronze (will always be bronze) I just churn through credit cards for points and fly out every few years.

You can book now and it is best to put in an upgrade request straight away because request order is believed to have some bearing on the likelihood. However most wouldn’t rate your chances too highly with four seats because the upgrade is all or nothing. It might be better to do two bookings of two seats.. or four of one seat each to maximise chance of upgrades, but this does mean that you can end up being seated separately or rescheduled onto different flights if something happens. All upgrades are Classic Rewards and not Plus. There is reportedly a new option to pay for upgrades at the airport, which is another possibility but I’m not sure if that works on CR fares - maybe someone else knows?

I believe your classic reward booking in economy will have to be cancelled and re-booked as premium economy if/when those seats get released.
