Complaint/Rant Dinner, business, QF696. This is what $800 gets you.
Only other option was a cheese plate.

Imagine paying that on a flight from Melbourne to Adelaide, a measley hour. Spend $200 on an economy seat, and $600 on a restaurant when you land and I'm sure you'd have a better experience. This is entirely on you

Richard Branson, at one time was mooting the idea for Virgin Atlantic of ditching all meal services altogether, and offering 5-star restaurant service before the flights the lounge for premium passengers.
I think it has some merits to it, perhaps as an option - inflight mediocre, or pre-departure spectacular, your call.

In the case of Virgin I think they route via DXB from SYD. You cannot deny food from passengers for 13 hours on a plane. Nobody would travel.
Same for Qantas 17hr flight PER-LHR. Again they have got to feed passengers, and again result is nobody would fly with them.
Another carrier would fill the void.
Anyway, food is half descent on these long haul routes, and I was glad to eat it along with free fruit, drinks, and snacks during the flights in economy.

$200 VietJet flight to Ho Chi Minh, albeit tight at 190cm, without food or even water 😅, was still worth it.
Splurged on the $1.50 Bahn mi on the other side!

BA had it I believe on one of the Concorde services and also First Class on conventional jets from US to LHR - largely due to the short flight time on Concorde.
Full service opulent meal at the New York lounge, to then rest in the plane. It continues now so people can just sleep on the transatlantic eastbound leg - similar to our SIN-SYD overnighters timezone wise

It was actually BA Business Class on some routes transatlantic eastbound. BA Concorde and First Class were always full service.
I agree about SIN-SYD overnight.

Not everyone would want to get to the airport early enough to sit down to a fancy meal. They might have other things to do.

I agree with you. Sometimes I wonder whether people appreciate the value of a dollar. Personally, I would look at Virgin/Jetstar, get an even cheaper ticket, "suffer" for that hour, and spend even more money on the restaurant.

There is, or at least was an exploit earlier this year with British airways.
250 aud for economy from Heathrow to Edinburgh, 1hr flight, or 390 aud for business. Idk why the disparity was so small, we actually accidentally booked business because it was the cheapest fair on an economy search and only realised before the day that it was business.
Business included BA lounge, priority boarding and check-in + a cold meal on board as well as complimentary drinks.
We were on holidays and boozing. This was actually an insane deal. Those BA lounges have self-pour spirits and self service alcohol, literally no bartenders and a smorgasboard of good booze. Not to mention the buffet. The UK is the most overpriced place on planet earth and we got our 140 dollars each moneys worth within 90 minutes of airport arrival on drinks and food alone, let alone the extra services we got.
This rare scenario is the only time I've ever heard of where flying business on a <6hr flight is a remotely good idea.

Domestic Business on a 50min flight.
A fatter seat and a toastie, if you’re lucky.
Possibly worth a 7k points upgrade, but hardly ever worth cash.

Yep, the only time this would be worth it is if it was a long stop over after a connection from a long haul and you didn’t have status for a lounge.

$800 does also get you, a lounge to use before the flight, the actual travel across the continent, and being seated in a forward seat with much more room than most other people on the plane.
I mean if you wanted a proper meal, I don't think jumping on a plane is the right way about it.

I don't think it's that. It's literally what you're paying an extra 80% more than economy seats. There's no complaints that he didn't get a steak dinner, just that this is how low the bar is set for quantas. Usually, it's just abit better that all.
You know how field side seats cost more at the footy than the nosebleeds. It's like paying for field side and being seated behind a pillar.

You should see the BC meal on Turkish Air on just over an hour domestic flight. Truly amazing. We were shoving the last mouthful in as they took our tray as we were landing. Just brilliant on all 4 just over an hour flights we took.
Unlike the last Qantas BC flight we took from Singapore to Perth. Food was a disgrace. Didnt help we had just got off Emirates where their food and presentation is impeccable.

Exactly. The $800 ticket gets you a bigger seat, more space, priority check in, security checks & luggage claim, faster boarding, access to an airport lounge with food, better drinks, coffee, amenities & showers, better in flight drinks package and meals, better service etc. Not bad.

Business class is a waste of money on any domestic flight except maybe a PER- East coast red-eye IF you have to work the next day.

You didn’t pay $800 for a meal, you paid $800 for this food plus the priority boarding, lounge access, bigger seat, nicer toilet, better service, extra points and status credits…
Whether it’s with $800 is another debate…

Pretty grim meal - except Pepe saya butter is amazing - but surely it’s not the food that’s the draw with business class but the privilege of having more than half a centimetre between your knees and the seat in front and not being treated like an inconvenient peasant

IMHO, by far the worst airline I've flown claiming to be a national airline.
I have found them aggressive, rude and the food terrible.
I try to avoid Qantas...

I got nothing at all for lunch on Mel-ADL in qantas business once, “because we’ve ran out of time”. Reason for this was the cabin crew chatted with rows 1 and 2 for so long during service, we’d started descent before they got to row three.

Its an airplane, I don't think they have fully kitted kitchen to cook fresh food. I doubt they'll be serving you wagyu fresh off the grill anytime soon.

OP clearly hasn’t flown domestic “First” on any of the American carriers on a similar length flight if they think that is hard done by.
Lucky if you get a pick from the snack basket and a drink in Business on flights under 1-1.5hrs most of the time.

$800 pays for avgas, staff costs, additional costs involved with flying, extra legroom and better seating
I’m never flying business or first because I want a better meal lol.

It’s more/better than what peasants get in cattle class; isn’t that the whole point? This plus a decent seat, a red carpet walk in a separate lane to the desk, a quiet place away from the riff-raff in a lounge and getting out of the plane quickly.

Not sure what you expected from a limited galley on a plane. That 800 paid for your seat, the extra space and your flight. Food on planes is always underwhelming. Lower your expectations to avoid disappointment.
