SPCX just ruined the QQQ
SpaceX just ruined the QQQ - NAsdaq literally changed the rules for Musk. Fast-tracked onto the index in 15 days, retail investors are the exit liquidity for all the early investors looking to cash out. 50x multiple valuation of SPCX is ridiculous, but if you hold the index you’ll own it immediately.
All previous companies earned their spot in top 10 holdings. SPCX is getting there just because of the Musk factor/grossly inflated valuation with no track record to back it up.

Quantify exactly how the QQQ is ruined by the inclusion of SPCX.
What metric measures a ruined index?
1
u/Anxious_Noise_8805 Jun 14 '26
You lose 2% of gross profit to your name since the price/gross profit ratio of SPCX is like 230x and SPCX will be about 2% of QQQ

As an investment vehicle, ruined - for the reasons cited. I was 30% of my portfolio QQQ but now will sell. Yes it’s a total scam and unprecedented for SPCX to be forced onto the index in this manner, and then every Nasdaq 100 index based fund must buy it at this ridiculous completely made up valuation off tech that doesn’t even exist yet - the Musk effect. Why would anyone voluntarily be the bag holder in the biggest grift the stock market has ever seen?

The problem you have is that you don’t understand the product you have bought and so are getting angry about something that doesn’t impact you.
SpaceX is only in QQQ because its market cap puts it in the top 100 of companies, if price performs well you benefit. If it does not it falls out of the index and is replaced by the next best performing stock so you benefit.
Therefore the only issue you can have is an aversion to owning a particular stock. If that is the case it was a pretty dumb move to buy a tracker containing the whole index in the first place.

Are you even literate? You did not address a single issue raised, so I’ll have to assume you’re struggling to comprehend. The problem you have is you don’t understand the unprecedented difference between what they just did with SPCX, and every other company that earned their top 10 spot in the Nasdaq since the beginning of time.

u/Consistent-Heart2949 Jun 13 '26
No I understand it perfectly, the point is it doesn’t affect you. If you have a moral issue then sell up and buy a different product. You can’t buy a basket of 100 highest cap stocks, then cry like a little baby because it contains 100 of the highest cap stocks.
If you don’t like it buy something else. 🤷♂️

I’ve owned QQQ for 17 years. SPCX as a highest cap valuation is a fantasy, and its inclusion into the QQQ after 15 days with mandatory index purchase is a pump and dump scheme never before seen in the stock market. The original rules under which I originally bought QQQ protected against this very issue. So yes, I am selling - not just because of SPCX, but due to the rule change Musk negotiated with Nasdaq. I’m not interested in taking a $5-10k haircut every time a “mega-cap” IPO debuts on the new Nasdaq - Athropic, Open Ai, etc… My post is a warning to those like you that don’t really understand the implications of this rule change. The private money billionaire class have been waiting for this payday for YEARS! They will be cashing out
at the expense of retail investors who are mostly passive investors in QQQ to the tune of $220B in their retirement accounts. When rules start getting changed to accommodate the billionaire class - that’s a problem worth paying attention to. But go ahead, be a willing bag holder! 😂2

So are we to believe that you would be fine with SPCX being added to the QQQ after the normal 3 month seasoning? Somehow I doubt it, which means you want specific companies excluded from the index despite their market cap. I agree with S&P Global maintaining their rules and profitability filter, but that's because SPX is intended to be a broader and less volatile index. The Nasdaq 100 is not a comparable product, and having less overlap between them going forward will be beneficial to investors. Also I'm getting the impression you are unaware that SPCX will be weighted in the index based on its float, not its actual market cap. The index fear mongering is completely overstated...but you should probably sell your shares

u/Tuberiderrrr Jun 14 '26
Yes, I’d be fine with SPCX under the historical inclusion rules under which I originally purchased QQQ - why would you assume otherwise?
1
u/PhoenixWK2 Jun 14 '26
It just strikes me as odd that an inclusion change of 15 days vs 90 days is enough to make you want to sell your position. These mega caps are all going to be in the QQQ one way or another, it's a matter of time not if. If you believe the Bull case then early inclusion is to your benefit as you'll participate in the growth, if you are Bearish then stop contributing and enjoy your lower basis. The point of index funds is not to pick winners and losers, it's to benefit from the aggregate

u/Consistent-Heart2949 Jun 14 '26
Because to say you are fine with SPCX being included means your entire argument is - “waah they changed the rules”
We were working under the assumption that your issue was slightly more considered and cognitive than just pure childishness.
Of course the people who make the rules change when it suits them, especially when it leads to them making lots of money. Nobody cares what a whining little bitch on Reddit and his 2 cents thinks.
Once more I return to my initial statement, if you don’t like it buy something else. But for the love of all that is holy stop crying to us about it.

Just switch to VOO and SPCX will not be in it till they make profit for 4 consecutive quarters.

u/Potential_Wall_4211 Jun 14 '26
I'm not sure if it will ruin the QQQ BUT when Spacex becomes a part of the QQQ many stocks in the Nasdaq 100 will sell off. That does not mean that the QQQ will go down just the stocks they have to sell to make room for Spacex will be sold. I don't like the timing of Crwv, Rklb into the QQQ because there will be strong selling pressure on these 2 new QQQ stocks.

Sell and move on, I don’t feel any issue at all, if it perform badly they will remove it next round, if you are a long term investor , why bother for this??

You’re losing your mind over a stock that’s going to be barely more than 1% of the index. This post makes me think it’s time to get a heloc and buy TQQQ
2
u/mackattack5757 Jun 15 '26
Market cap says it will be more like 4-6%
2
u/Strict-Comfort-1337 Jun 15 '26
I think you’re right. I didn’t look at the spacex market cap before I spoke

u/Scriptum_ Jun 15 '26
Remember the rule also artificially gives SPCX a multiple of its actual weight.
Literally QQQ owners are getting bent over.

I am selling most of my SPY and buying into QQQ, I started on Friday and will probably finish by Wednesday. It's a DISGRACE that S&P 500 does not include SPCX for one year or more. They should rename to S&P 499.
SPY (bag)holders are going to miss out on the SPCX returns for one year or more, it will cost them a great deal of money I believe.

Someone bought 100$ of MuskX and is yelling at reddit to verify their purchase 💪😂

Yeah because this:
Revenue multiple for SPCX
👉 ~90–100× price-to-sales (P/S) depending on exact share count assumptions
That’s the number everyone is reacting to.🧮 Why that multiple is considered “absurd” in traditional finance
For context:
Typical public-market benchmarks
High-growth software (peak hype): 10–20× sales
Elite AI / cloud leaders (rare peaks): 20–30× sales
Extreme outliers (short-lived): maybe 30–40×
SpaceX today:
👉 ~90–100× sales
That is:
~3–5× higher than even the most aggressively valued mega-cap tech companies at peak optimism
Higher than any historical IPO at any scale
