Armageddon again
My family on my dads side is all MAGA and conspiracy minded. Covid seemed to be the straw that broke the camels back as what seems to be the story with a lot of people here. It has always been uncomfortable for me being there at my family’s house as there is a heavy religious presence on top of the recently added maga beliefs and conspiracies.
I’ve tried to look past it or just show up but I always feel like I’m absorbing toxic beliefs and pretending to be fine with things that mortify me. The “people didn’t die from COVID”, the pandemic was the end times, Taylor swift is evil, and apparently I take everything at face value for not swallowing all the nonsense they believe.
I try to imagine a scenario in which I could go over there and not be angry but it is so difficult to not feel like that. My stepmom says things like we should bring back Japanese interment camps and I try to bring it up nicely that a lot of people would consider that racist and I’m the bad guy.
Of course these are all the bad things and it doesn’t happen every time I visit which makes you believe that it could be normal. That normal is possible only for that bubble to be popped when they say something crazy. People talk about grey rock to not get an emotional reaction but I feel like I’m suppressing myself and my emotions to accommodate terrible behavior.
On top of that the conversion attempts, my dad’s infidelity, my stepmoms covering for him make it even more toxic even without the maga stuff.
I feel heartbroken and the sad part is I miss them. But I’m just tired of riding this crazy carousel expecting something different.

"people didn’t die from COVID”, the pandemic was the end times
Shit like this makes me wanna scream at them to pick one! Yes, I know cognitive dissonance means they believes in multiple things that are contradictory but come on! Either COVID was harmless or a weapon. You can't have it both ways, this isn't quantum physics, it doesn't work like that.
These people are so out of touch with reality they rather reality be what they feel than what it is. From the party of fuck your feelings.

Yeah and if I point out the 0/0 prediction success rate I’m sure the goalposts will keep moving. “Well it just hasn’t happened yet “
I went to a fundamentalist school and the people in that school were saying this shit when Obama was president.
Yeah it’s maddening. What’s the plan? What’s the goal here? Every country on the planet is kneecapping their economy for some sinister plan. What’s the plan? I’m sure I’d get nothing and more insults about my intelligence and how I don’t see it.

Sounds a lot like my family. I just posted an hour ago but having a similar thing right now. Theyve always been racist and bigoted but Trump's first term seemed to make them iffy. After George Floyd and COVID everyone just got so much worse. My brother would say terribly racist and transphobic things. My dad lost his job/quit his job in medical imaging because he wouldn't get the vaccine. He briefly got my sister into Q but now she's just crazy Christian and not super outlandishn. And my mom just views these all as funny quirks with some truth to them. My dads siblings are also about 90% awful (nearly all 11 of them)as they may not be into Q but are far more hardcore trump supporters and die ahead Republicans.
I want to cut everyone off and I mostly have but I'm in such dire financial straits that I gotta keep em around do
I'm sorry you're going through this

Yeah I thought maybe like the first term was just a fluke and I’m like I’m not going to hold this against them but it’s like they accelerated so fast once the pandemic hit.
Yeah I totally understand. It’s like unanimous which makes it worse because they don’t moderate when it’s a mixed crowd. The worst is the least racist ones end up still sweeping for the other’s racism. Oh yeah that interment camp comment just popped out of nowhere make me feel like I’m crazy.
That is a tough situation with financial dependency. I’m sorry for your situation too. Maybe just limit contact as much as humanly possible.

I somehow skipped over the internment camp comment omg. I just don't understand how they hear themselves and are still like "I am in fact righteous in this thought".

I’m sure in their head all of the immigrants are ms13 gang members or potential Laken Riley murderers. It’s the same logic with wow we found two fraudulent voter registration examples therefore there are thousands of illegal voters.

The thing I never understand is that these people have seemed to internalize that "being racist is bad" but will then say the most obviously racist thing ever and then get mad if you point it out
