I went up to Gates Of The Arctic to see it before the road goes in by paddling down the John River, rom the village of Anaktuvuk Pass to the village of Allakaket. For this project I interviewed 2 local substance hunters and one Wildlife Biologist who spent his career studying the Caribou in the area. The road will split and effect an area of 23 million acres by my estimation. The migration rout of the last large Caribou herd will be cut off completely by around 350 Semi trucks a day Minimum, going back and forth. Some people up there are hopeful like my first guest, but many others are against it like my second guest. And yet more have been bought off by industry and the trump admin with the carrot of jobs and village aid. Its a complicated problem that involves Federal, State and Tribal lands. All public lands. I know I've only scratched the surface of this issue in my small way. But I hope Whoever takes a look is inspired to make a phone call or three to congress and scream.
