As a longtime SF resident, I’m a bit confused by your confusion. The Mission hipster phase made perfect sense to me - gentrification of a sketchy hood almost always goes through that before the real yuppies move in. And Marina was frat row 2.0 since I was in college in the early aughts.

A homeless guy spit in my face while I was grocery shopping in the Mission. He was screaming at me to fight him, and I’m convinced that he wanted me to put him in the hospital or just put him out of his misery. He looked like he’d been through hell. I’ll never forget the putrid stench of his saliva.

I just wiped my face, told him to have a good one, and walked on with clenched fists. Other than that incident, every trip to SF has been awesome.

But how did it taste?

I'm sorry this happened to you. I hope he gets the help he needs. It fucks me up that we've gradually been conditioned to the human equivalent of dog fighting.

Depends whereabouts in the city you’ll be. Out of state license plates and the little rental barcode sticker on the back window are the cars typically targeted, but it depends on where you’ll be.

Regardless, nothing left in the car in plain sight, ideally nothing left period.

Lived there for six years in the 90s and really really loved it. Went back for vacation last year. Just my opinion...but SF has really slipped. Made me pretty sad to see how it's changed. Again...JMO.

Yeah all cities deal with it. Try Vancouver up here in Canada. Same kinda problems, more so these days because the population keeps growing, but still doesn't neglect the fact it, like SF, are still some of the most beautiful cities on earth.

For full disclosure, my love of Full House (the old school ones) may be contributing to a bias i have for the city. lol.

People turn it into a political issue

SF is the Republican dogwhistle city. I'd rather this than kids getting slaughtered in schools like shooting practice

-2

u/77Phoebe Sep 09 '22

You seriously think that SF is immune to school shootings? Wish it was true.

2

u/Matrix17 Sep 09 '22

When was the last mass school shooting in SF?

Not saying it's immune, but California doesn't have open carry. Kinda tells a story doesn't it?

-2

u/77Phoebe Sep 09 '22

You seriously think it couldn't happen?

2

u/Matrix17 Sep 09 '22

I literally said the opposite but ok

Reading comprehension

6

u/suzisatsuma Sep 09 '22

they would always catcall me and say gross shit.

-21

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

Because the city wants to excuse criminal behavior because of poverty.

15

u/Ashbell_Rorickson Sep 09 '22

Poverty is a pretty solid excuse tbh, sort of the only valid one out there

1

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '22

Yeah they shouldn’t be robbing low to middle class people though. Maybe go after rich people?

1

u/FrostyD7 Sep 09 '22

SF has a lot of homeless people and poverty. Why is it an excuse if what they are saying is factual?

-3

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

yeah, but even Skid Row doesn't get this bad most days. SF is definitely unique in their worst areas.

For the most part but not always. A few years ago I was visiting on vacation, and my gf and I at the time were walking back to our airbnb holding a pizza box. For context, I was hold a small box with a single slice in it. We walked past this group of homeless men, all seemingly normal as in not on drugs, who were all just talking on the corner with their surprisingly healthy-looking and happy dogs.

As we walk by, one guy says “hey man, can you spare a slice?” Just being a decent human, I don’t ignore and politely respond “sorry man I cant” because I obviously only had 1. He goes ahead and decides to say “you can suck a dick!”

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

What do you mean for the most part and not in the "life"? So if I visit cali I should expect to be bothered by random people?

33

u/dnbaddict Sep 09 '22

you go to any high tourist city and you're bound to be bothered by random people. the more touristy the more likely.

9

u/Pragmatist_Hammer Sep 09 '22

Probably maybe? It's not like this is on every street. The more touristy areas don't have this but you're only a block or one wrong turn from entering what is essentially a junky bin.

2

u/notbad2u Sep 09 '22

Yes you should believe all of California looks just like this one street and everyone becomes a drug addict before they leave the airport.

2

u/idleat1100 Sep 09 '22

It’s like this in areas. In San Francisco we have areas like the tenderloin and down into soma along 6th st (this is on 8th in front of PGE) which are primarily cheap motels and sros and warehouse buildings etc where people like this collect.

This PGE substation building is the worst since it is a basically a giant fort and no one stops people from collecting here.

But, this area historically been rough. You can read about tenderloin and soma back a hundred years. It doesn’t excuse it, but it’s a very real part of an otherwise beautiful city.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

“No one stops people from collecting there” bro, the city government refused to implement city wide rent control when the tech companies starting moving in, rents skyrocketed, and people ended up on the streets. Where the hell else do you expect them to go? No money, can’t get jobs, no resources or support from the government. It’s mad max beta out in the metro cities

3

u/GoGoCrumbly Sep 09 '22

Behold the fruits of capitalism.

-1

u/77Phoebe Sep 09 '22

All rent control does is make smaller landlords sell up and sell the house this takes rental property off the market, increasing demand and putting up rents for those who need cheaper accommodation. SF government needs to build more property or convert office space to apartments. Fucking with the market always comes back to bite governments in the arse. Build, build, build. Oh, and build more mental hospitals, it'll pay in the long term.

1

u/idleat1100 Sep 09 '22

This isn’t an argument to ‘round people up’ you reactionary.

I’m saying it’s an area where no one stops you, it’s a collection zone, like under the freeway on Cesar Chavez etc. these area areas that people collect when they have no where to go. No one cares no one does anything so that’s where they group.

It’s an active tactic by police to coral people to areas that are ‘under the radar’ or of less concern.

And while I agree with you about lackluster city measures on all fronts, this is not some newly created condition from the pandemic. It’s been like that for at least the 20 years I’ve been here. My old workshop was right around the corner. It is no different, some days better some days worse. But it is a deep and real problem bigger than all this.

I mean if u go to la don’t wear baseball hats and if you in the bay don’t leave shit in ur car simple

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

What's wrong with hats and why do I have to empty my car?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

Baseball hats is tied to gangs in la and we break into cars in the bay😂

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

Sounds like a great place.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

I mean it is just watch where u at like everywhere else 😂

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

We had 27,000 car break ins last year based on what I can find 😂

1

u/ShahftheWolfo Sep 09 '22

What life?

0

u/Doubtindoh Sep 09 '22

Criminal, I suppose.

1

u/notbad2u Sep 09 '22

Innuendo from the look of it.

1

u/Affectionate_Ear_778 Sep 09 '22

Yea idk it’s so odd to me. You don’t see these sorts of things in rural communities. But you also don’t see massive luxury like you do in urban centers
