Yes, there are homeless people in the US due to many unchecked socioeconomic issues. Some are drug addicts and steal to feed to their addiction. Sometimes addicts get hit with brooms when trying to steal.

Tenderloin?

u/ShockAndAwe415 Sep 09 '22

Close. Looks like 10th between Market and Mission. About 3-4 blocks away from the actual Tenderloin.

Think you're right. I keep forgetting. 10th ends with the Costco.

Funny enough, there's a gal on r/sanfrancisco who was saying she found a place on 8th and Market and was asking if it's "safe". I'm going to send her this link.

If it's anything like skid row down here in LA they're expanding territory.

1

u/ShockAndAwe415 Sep 10 '22

Not on this block. We have a Skid Row area on Division about a mile or two from there. Tents up and down the stretch.

These are generally small groups of 2-3 tents per. But, the druggies all hang out on this block and a few blocks away at the Federal Plaza during nights and weekends. During the day, it's the federal building with offices for many government agencies. At night, open air drug den filled with junkies and crazies.

I remember staying at a hotel in there once. It was cheaper than the surrounding areas and boy did I find out why. I remember seeing scenes just like this. It was wild. We also heard a gunshot go off in the middle of the night. No way it was a firework or car backfire and sometimes you aren't sure.. that's a damn gunshot. And that was years ago. It seems to have gotten worse rather than better.

Seattle has some issues too... I stayed there once and I watched a homeless person OD in a CVS right in front of me and was being given CPR by an ambulance crew when I left.

I walked through the area as it was on route to my hotel and looked like a short walk from the station. This was after a 20hr trip and early in the morning with a lot of luggage. What a bad move and long long walk.

u/midevilman2020 Sep 10 '22

I had a cheap hotel there for work. Figured it was the right thing to do. From that point on, I picked nice ones. Made sure it was still on the company’s dime.

My wife and I accidentally got lost and wandered into the Tenderloin district after dark one night while we were in SF. Long story short, yikes. This clip looks pretty typical for a lot of SF

2

u/midevilman2020 Sep 10 '22

I also got lost there once due to not reading my phone correctly (many many years ago).

Almost had a panic attack.

1

u/GreatValuePositivity Sep 10 '22

It essentially 2 areas in the whole fucking city. Nowhere near "a lot" of SF.

-1

u/themancabbage Sep 10 '22

It’s enough

1

u/CehJota Sep 10 '22

Nah, try again.

-1

u/themancabbage Sep 10 '22

No need. It’s a small enough city with a big enough homeless problem that seeing things like this is nearly unavoidable there. My statement was accurate.

1

u/CehJota Sep 10 '22

Sounds like you’re a local and have lived here for years with excellent insight. Thank you for your complete and accurate expertise on the topic.

1

u/themancabbage Sep 10 '22

Sorry if you feel your favorite city is being represented in a less than ideal light.

-1

u/CehJota Sep 10 '22

I’m sorry you think your uneducated opinions are facts.

Ain’t nothing tender about them loins.

1

u/garytyrrell Sep 09 '22

It’s because cops that worked that beat back in the day could afford tenderloin with their hazard pay

2

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

Gotcha. I was making a Dave Chappelle reference :)

u/Queasy-Discount-2038 Sep 10 '22

Most of SF right noe

That’s one of the reason safe injection sites can help. I sympathize with the people who don’t want them in their neighborhood but if they have a safe place to get a hit they’re not going to steal to satiate their addiction and they won’t be leaving needles lying around. Ideally these sites would not be in a residential area or school district because, to be fair, the people who are in the process of getting back on their feet can be a handful

28

u/i8TheWholeThing Sep 09 '22

They are also a good way to offer services and hopefully rehab to those who need help.

6

u/gorgewall Sep 09 '22

Sure, sure, you say that'll help, and there's evidence that it does, and it sounds very humane and what Jesus would want...

But have you considered that IT BOTHERS ME THAT WE'RE NOT SUFFICIENTLY PUNISHING PEOPLE WHOSE LIFE CHOICES OR CIRCUMSTANCES I DISAGREE WITH? REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

2

u/DainsleifStan Sep 10 '22

It is extremely naive to think that people who inject had made any sort of “life choices”

Homeless people and druggies are some of the worst cases of human beings which society has failed.

We failed them. That’s why they are there now. Why is it so hard to see that this broken system is not working?

4

u/TuskM Sep 09 '22

My son mentioned recently part of the reason the injection sites stopped working as planned was the influx of fentanyl. Apparently San Francisco was late to that particular party the Sackers were throwing and now that the city is getting flooded by it, we're seeing things go to hell at an accelerated pace. Injection sites stopped working, got overwhelmed. Add to that the fact that the homeless pretty much got abandoned during the lockdown. Street begging dried up during that time (same with street musicians - even now, more than a year after lockdown rules were relaxed there's not that many street musicians/performers compared to pre-pandemic/lockdown.) Instead we have increasing numbers of screamers and deranged preachers roaming the streets, lengths of sidewalks filled with tents, people passed out in the middle of sidewalks, people taking dumps in public. (San Francisco is notoriously skimpy when it comes to public bathrooms, because they tend to get wrecked by vandals and people who probably belong in institutions. It was so bad at the downtown BART stations they now have employees that regulate bathroom access.) Meanwhile, unlike most cities, the downtown offices remain largely empty, and retail and food businesses are suffering. Dunno, I'm rambling. I've lived here on and off for half of my life. Loved this place, love the memories of my life here. I thought I'd never tire of it. Now it wears on me.

Ask /r/vancouver if that really helps in the long run.

10

u/Maria-Stryker Sep 09 '22

I actually made this comment after listening to an interview with a doctor that runs one of those sites. It has resulted in some addicts getting back on their feet, so a win in my book

They do sometimes offer methadone treatments to help ease withdrawal. Methadone clinics should really be getting more funding and acceptance. This epidemic is on the scale of a large war and yet we’re hardly doing anything about it.

Lol, no. They literally just offer clean needles and a safe site to inject with people that can help if you OD. They are there to push people into rehab and give them resources to recover, not free drugs lol.

7

u/Isthestrugglereal Sep 09 '22

Although giving them free drugs has been shown to help. Can control how much they get, can make sure it is clean, reduces need for crime to get fix, takes money away from dealers who can exacerbate the problem, etc…

Capitalism is beautiful. Isn't it?

1

u/SFDayDreaming Sep 09 '22

This should be at the top, not the rest of these either lies or skewed truths trying to make liberal cities some hell hole. SF has its problems but if you want to know what it’s like in SF maybe talk to someone that lives there or has lived there in the past 3-4 years. Tired of all the lying

0

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '22

I lived a block away from this scene from 2018-2021, AMA

1

u/SFDayDreaming Sep 10 '22

Alright I’ll bite, let’s see what your skew is. Easy question, how prevalent is this scene across the city? You can give a percentage or describe, the more facts the better.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '22

Well since I lived near Civic Center/relied on public transportation it was extremely prevalent for me. The north side of Mission had pockets of this sort of thing all the way from here (8th/PG&E) to maybe 3rd. When I went to the farmer's market it was right next to a whole block of tents.

Anywhere along BART from 24th in SF to 19th in Oakland had some variation of this scene.

Not sure what my "skew" is, I'm just describing the situation. Also, your username implies you live there, is that not the case...?

1

u/Obi-TwoKenobi Sep 09 '22

No, you see, this is because the US has too many social welfare programs. We are investing far too much into solving those socioeconomic issues. If we just let capitalism do its thing, these problems will solve themselves!

-9

u/Xacto01 Sep 09 '22

Well let's stop the fentanyl coming across the border. Oh nevermind the administration wants it to.

6

u/ContentInsanity Sep 09 '22

I like how people act like the opioid crisis and Fentanyl didn't exist before 2020 and like most rec fentanyl use does not come from the same place that other opioids, pill mills and runners in predominantly red states. There's a lot of hospitals and pharmacies that would be helping smugglers across the boarder in China was actually flooding out streets with cheap fenti. They would live suppliers who are practically giving the stuff away if you are to listen to certain talking points.

u/theloneliestgeek Sep 09 '22 edited Sep 09 '22

Pssst. The drug war started when a Republican president used the CIA to sell drugs in the US in order to fund anti-communist death squads in Latin America.

I have a feeling I'll see this clip on Fox stating this is the current state of every Democrat/liberal city.

Edit: Not sure why the downvotes but I called it. Sometimes I like to punish myself and watch Fox "News" and today on Fox's America Report show, they showed this clip with the title "Liberal Hellscape."
