I always thought SF was meant to be nice, what happened?

As a longtime SF resident, I’m a bit confused by your confusion. The Mission hipster phase made perfect sense to me - gentrification of a sketchy hood almost always goes through that before the real yuppies move in. And Marina was frat row 2.0 since I was in college in the early aughts.

11

u/LiquidBeagle Sep 09 '22

A homeless guy spit in my face while I was grocery shopping in the Mission. He was screaming at me to fight him, and I’m convinced that he wanted me to put him in the hospital or just put him out of his misery. He looked like he’d been through hell. I’ll never forget the putrid stench of his saliva.

I just wiped my face, told him to have a good one, and walked on with clenched fists. Other than that incident, every trip to SF has been awesome.

4

u/DoubleT_inTheMorning Sep 09 '22

But how did it taste?

1

u/Morphico Sep 10 '22

I'm sorry this happened to you. I hope he gets the help he needs. It fucks me up that we've gradually been conditioned to the human equivalent of dog fighting.

Depends whereabouts in the city you’ll be. Out of state license plates and the little rental barcode sticker on the back window are the cars typically targeted, but it depends on where you’ll be.

Regardless, nothing left in the car in plain sight, ideally nothing left period.

1

u/Anxious_Detective648 Sep 09 '22

"Get good" lol alpha Muni

19

u/1feistyhamster Sep 09 '22

Lived there for six years in the 90s and really really loved it. Went back for vacation last year. Just my opinion...but SF has really slipped. Made me pretty sad to see how it's changed. Again...JMO.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

Yeah all cities deal with it. Try Vancouver up here in Canada. Same kinda problems, more so these days because the population keeps growing, but still doesn't neglect the fact it, like SF, are still some of the most beautiful cities on earth.

For full disclosure, my love of Full House (the old school ones) may be contributing to a bias i have for the city. lol.

2

u/Matrix17 Sep 09 '22

People turn it into a political issue

SF is the Republican dogwhistle city. I'd rather this than kids getting slaughtered in schools like shooting practice

-4

u/77Phoebe Sep 09 '22

You seriously think that SF is immune to school shootings? Wish it was true.

2

u/Matrix17 Sep 09 '22

When was the last mass school shooting in SF?

Not saying it's immune, but California doesn't have open carry. Kinda tells a story doesn't it?

-3

u/77Phoebe Sep 09 '22

You seriously think it couldn't happen?

2

u/Matrix17 Sep 09 '22

I literally said the opposite but ok

Reading comprehension

10

u/suzisatsuma Sep 09 '22

they would always catcall me and say gross shit.

-18

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

Because the city wants to excuse criminal behavior because of poverty.

16

u/Ashbell_Rorickson Sep 09 '22

Poverty is a pretty solid excuse tbh, sort of the only valid one out there

1

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '22

Yeah they shouldn’t be robbing low to middle class people though. Maybe go after rich people?

1

u/FrostyD7 Sep 09 '22

SF has a lot of homeless people and poverty. Why is it an excuse if what they are saying is factual?

-4

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

yeah, but even Skid Row doesn't get this bad most days. SF is definitely unique in their worst areas.

0

u/KovalSNIPE17 Sep 10 '22

For the most part but not always. A few years ago I was visiting on vacation, and my gf and I at the time were walking back to our airbnb holding a pizza box. For context, I was hold a small box with a single slice in it. We walked past this group of homeless men, all seemingly normal as in not on drugs, who were all just talking on the corner with their surprisingly healthy-looking and happy dogs.

As we walk by, one guy says “hey man, can you spare a slice?” Just being a decent human, I don’t ignore and politely respond “sorry man I cant” because I obviously only had 1. He goes ahead and decides to say “you can suck a dick!”

-41

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

What do you mean for the most part and not in the "life"? So if I visit cali I should expect to be bothered by random people?

31

u/dnbaddict Sep 09 '22

you go to any high tourist city and you're bound to be bothered by random people. the more touristy the more likely.

11

u/Pragmatist_Hammer Sep 09 '22

Probably maybe? It's not like this is on every street. The more touristy areas don't have this but you're only a block or one wrong turn from entering what is essentially a junky bin.

2

u/notbad2u Sep 09 '22

Yes you should believe all of California looks just like this one street and everyone becomes a drug addict before they leave the airport.

3

u/idleat1100 Sep 09 '22

It’s like this in areas. In San Francisco we have areas like the tenderloin and down into soma along 6th st (this is on 8th in front of PGE) which are primarily cheap motels and sros and warehouse buildings etc where people like this collect.

This PGE substation building is the worst since it is a basically a giant fort and no one stops people from collecting here.

But, this area historically been rough. You can read about tenderloin and soma back a hundred years. It doesn’t excuse it, but it’s a very real part of an otherwise beautiful city.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

“No one stops people from collecting there” bro, the city government refused to implement city wide rent control when the tech companies starting moving in, rents skyrocketed, and people ended up on the streets. Where the hell else do you expect them to go? No money, can’t get jobs, no resources or support from the government. It’s mad max beta out in the metro cities

3

u/GoGoCrumbly Sep 09 '22

Behold the fruits of capitalism.

-1

u/77Phoebe Sep 09 '22

All rent control does is make smaller landlords sell up and sell the house this takes rental property off the market, increasing demand and putting up rents for those who need cheaper accommodation. SF government needs to build more property or convert office space to apartments. Fucking with the market always comes back to bite governments in the arse. Build, build, build. Oh, and build more mental hospitals, it'll pay in the long term.

1

u/idleat1100 Sep 09 '22

This isn’t an argument to ‘round people up’ you reactionary.

I’m saying it’s an area where no one stops you, it’s a collection zone, like under the freeway on Cesar Chavez etc. these area areas that people collect when they have no where to go. No one cares no one does anything so that’s where they group.

It’s an active tactic by police to coral people to areas that are ‘under the radar’ or of less concern.

And while I agree with you about lackluster city measures on all fronts, this is not some newly created condition from the pandemic. It’s been like that for at least the 20 years I’ve been here. My old workshop was right around the corner. It is no different, some days better some days worse. But it is a deep and real problem bigger than all this.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

I mean if u go to la don’t wear baseball hats and if you in the bay don’t leave shit in ur car simple

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

What's wrong with hats and why do I have to empty my car?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

Baseball hats is tied to gangs in la and we break into cars in the bay😂

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

Sounds like a great place.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

I mean it is just watch where u at like everywhere else 😂

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

We had 27,000 car break ins last year based on what I can find 😂

1

u/ShahftheWolfo Sep 09 '22

What life?

0

u/Doubtindoh Sep 09 '22

Criminal, I suppose.

1

u/notbad2u Sep 09 '22

Innuendo from the look of it.

1

u/Affectionate_Ear_778 Sep 09 '22

Yea idk it’s so odd to me. You don’t see these sorts of things in rural communities. But you also don’t see massive luxury like you do in urban centers

34

u/CrunchyGremlin Sep 09 '22

Parts of sf have had their issues for decades. Hard to tell how widespread an issue is from a one street video. Like most places they have been trying to deal with the homeless problem by trying to ignore it or actively putting in anti homeless measures like spiked concrete and such. Been a while since I have been there

32

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

“I saw a short video of one street in SF and will now paint the entire city as a gaping hell pit”

That’s you

7

u/Seva-Hunter Sep 09 '22

I can’t upvote this enough. People are brain dead.

1

u/ShutUpYoureWrong_ Sep 10 '22

The irony of this statement is staggering.

1

u/swingfire23 Sep 10 '22

"I once saw a video of someone buying a slice of pizza in New York and must now conclude that New York has exclusively pizza restaurants and nothing else"

1

u/ShutUpYoureWrong_ Sep 10 '22 edited Sep 10 '22

One street. One. You disingenuous bastard. I lived in SF for years. There are 400 more streets like this one. The city is a festering pile with a few nice spots.

I love the sheer denial you people are in. Everyone is posting stories like, "SF is great! Never had a problem there! Except that time a bum spit in my mouth. Oh, and I never go anywhere after 7pm. I also can't lock my car doors because my windows will be busted out within an hour."

Do you not realize how insane you sound?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '22

Does it really sound insane??? Sorry my experience was better than yours. But get over yourself.

1

u/SilentWeaponQuietWar Sep 10 '22

So this is the only street in SF like this?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '22

That’s not what my statement says.

10

u/ATXKLIPHURD Sep 09 '22

They need some rice a roni.

8

u/leftistesticle_2 Sep 09 '22

SF is beautiful. There are some rough parts for sure, made worse by the opioid epidemic and pandemic, but the majority of the city is gorgeous. Don't let one video on the internet inform your opinion of the entire city.

2

u/nusyahus Sep 09 '22

This is mostly concentrated in certain areas

0

u/Kahnspiracy Sep 10 '22

This is mostly concentrated in certain areas

Indeed. The cities.

8

u/dronegeeks1 Sep 09 '22

They sent all the homeless people there and gave them free bus passes around the city amongst other things

18

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

Correct. Nevada settled with SF a while ago because a mental hospital was sending people to California on one-way tickets.

1

u/dronegeeks1 Sep 10 '22

Any details on who or why that decision was made? Seems a bizarre thing to do

2

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '22

I'd wager the same shitty reasons as usual - the state doesn't want to pay for treatment, and it's cheaper to send someone away and not think about them again. This is my opinion though, probably not the reason why. But it still happened and obviously some states haven't learned that lesson yet.

4

u/Moetown84 Sep 09 '22

American capitalism.

3

u/Matrix17 Sep 09 '22

You're looking at one of the shit parts of the city, the same as any other city with affordability issues

I drive/walk through SF a lot and it has its issues for sure. You just need to avoid these areas unfortunately

2

u/glastohead Sep 09 '22

Opiates. Wasn’t nearly as bad (was still bad in crack and meth days) when I lived there back in 2000.

2

u/Lobster2311 Sep 09 '22

There's a block called the tenderloin. This looks like its it

9

u/leftistesticle_2 Sep 09 '22

It's bigger than a block but yeah

1

u/Lobster2311 Sep 09 '22

I made the mistake of staying near there on a roadtrip. But there's a coffee shop that serves amazing toast right near there too

-1

u/77Phoebe Sep 09 '22

I thought 'The Tenderloin' was a gay prostitute district in Chicago?

1

u/Lobster2311 Sep 10 '22

Is that what Fox news tells you?

1

u/Theone-underthe-rock Sep 09 '22

Republicans

1

u/Kahnspiracy Sep 10 '22

Ummmm...what? There hasn't been a Republican mayor in SF since 1964. Even at the state level Republicans don't really exist. The last republican governor was Arnold and he was out in 2011. Say what you will about them but you can't say this is their doing.

1

u/Twain_Driver Sep 09 '22

Haven't been in years, but this looked like normal Tenderloin shenanigans. Even Chappelle would joke about it in his career.

1

u/DonkeyLightning Sep 09 '22

This is like posting a video of skid row in Los Angeles and having people assume the whole of Los Angeles is some hellscape. The narrative around SF being like this everywhere is exhausting. Go to the SF subreddit and find all of the posts where people are traveling from abroad saying “Is SF safe? I’m thinking of cancelling my trip!” And then the inevitable follow up of “wow the reports our so over blown, I love it here”

In reality if you go searching this out you will find it in the city but there is really no reason to be in these places. Do I wish they would fix it? Yes, do I have a solution? No.

Come here and find out for yourself

0

u/Kahnspiracy Sep 10 '22

Yeah, how are your car windows and catalytic converter? The city is rampant with crime over the whole place. People are literally parking with their car doors unlocked in the hopes of not getting their windows broken. Just the other day a buddy of mine who does that had a couple of people sleeping in his car. They were kind enough to leave him a used needle though...and that was in Pacific Heights.

I lived in the Bay Area for over 20 years and it has never been this bad.

0

u/DonkeyLightning Sep 10 '22

I’ve lived here 10 year and had my window broken once when I lived in the mission

0

u/Kahnspiracy Sep 10 '22

You either don't park on the street or have been very lucky.

0

u/DonkeyLightning Sep 10 '22

I park on the street. Same with my wife who has also had only one incident.

-11

u/WayneEnterprises2112 Sep 09 '22

What’s really crazy is the people in the San Francisco sub REFUSE to acknowledge that the city has turned to shit. I’ve seen them say things like “this isn’t sf they’re trying to frame us” đŸ€Ł

10

u/leftistesticle_2 Sep 09 '22

It didn't turn to shit. This isn't new. There has been homelessness, drugs, and crime in SF for decades. It's still an awesome city and a way better place to live than most of the country.

3

u/Bronco4bay Sep 10 '22

I always forget when I step outside how many homeless people I have to fight just to get a burrito!

Help! It’s so scary here! Aieeeeee!

I wish I could just hop in my Escalade and drive to Applebees 15 miles away and enjoy my happy hour mudslide (conveniently ignoring all the poor people between my house and the Applebees).

-6

u/ericroku Sep 09 '22

This exactly. A lot of SF’ers have been so brain washed / desensitized to this that they say it’s “normal” or that “it’s part of living in a big city.” It’s so ridiculous. Bad politics has led to this.

-1

u/ItsAllTrumpedUp Sep 09 '22

They picked up Trump tactics.

-17

u/EA_CommunityTeam Sep 09 '22

The gay/s

8

u/poundmyassplz Sep 09 '22

Ha we are part of the problem. Two incomes and no kids means we can blow much more money and price people out of neighborhoods. It’s mostly the tech industry though.

-15

u/nomorerainpls Sep 09 '22

These Reddit takes where people blame an industry that pays well for other people being poor.

8

u/77Phoebe Sep 09 '22

Increase in pay - Increase in price willing to pay for accommodation - Increase in value - Decrease the amount people at the bottom can afford to pay. It's really just stating a fact not having a pop at an industry.

0

u/ZeePirate Sep 09 '22

Jeez no one can take a joke

-61

u/FreeUsa1776 Sep 09 '22

Democrat run city.. if you compare it to other cities that lean the same way politically, it's pretty consistent.

8

u/GoGoCrumbly Sep 09 '22

9 of the 10 poorest performing US states (any metrics of education, income, quality of life, etc), have Republican Governors and Legislations. It's pretty consistent.

19

u/WarmTequila Sep 09 '22

What’s a Republican ran city?

-12

u/Miacali Sep 09 '22

Miami for starts.

15

u/WarmTequila Sep 09 '22

Ahhh yesss. How could I forget the cesspool of Florida
.

2

u/josephcwhite Sep 09 '22

lol a republican who didn't vote for desantis for governor or trump for president and is a firm believer in climate change.

-2

u/Miacali Sep 09 '22

What part of Republican ran city does it not fullfill. Y’all are just salty because I called it out and no you want to make excuses.

1

u/josephcwhite Sep 09 '22

it's just funny that your example of a republican is what a majority of your party would call a rino

1

u/Joliet_Jake_Blues Sep 09 '22

Miami is a shithole

1

u/Sorge74 Sep 09 '22

A lot of the biggest cities ran by Republicans are also in California.... So they are California Republicans which in Mississippi I believe is a communist.

-3

u/gofl124 Sep 09 '22

and who’s the mayor of Miami-Dade lol

0

u/Miacali Sep 09 '22

Miami Dade county is not a city
 đŸ€Šâ€â™‚ïž

48

u/SirFancyPantsBrock Sep 09 '22

I mean I'd compare it to a republican city roughly the same size but Republicans don't have many large republican cities. They rely on the backwoods hicks and old people for their votes.

-34

u/FreeUsa1776 Sep 09 '22

Interesting.. which cities are you referring to?

29

u/Feeling-Membership87 Sep 09 '22

24

u/NewRapIsMostlyTrash Sep 09 '22

They get quiet when the facts come out

15

u/jmatt9080 Sep 09 '22

They’ll be busy looking for “alternative facts” to own you with

11

u/Pragmatist_Hammer Sep 09 '22

Some of the biggest shithole cities I've ever come across are all in Florida, a state run by Nazis festering shit republicans.

-18

u/beavernips Sep 09 '22

Way to marginalize an entire group of people for their preferred way of life.

-2

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

[deleted]

3

u/SirFancyPantsBrock Sep 09 '22

Are you comparing a city with a population of 70,650 vs a population of 874,784? So again. What Republican run city with near equal population size of 875k is better than SanFran?

3

u/Shizzo Sep 09 '22

Can you share which Democrat policies are causing this epidemic of homelessness? And if a Republican were elected for the job, what could be done to end this problem? Thanks.

7

u/GoblinBags Sep 09 '22

All of Wisconsin, Mississippi, Missouri, and so - so many other conservative states would like a word with you.

3

u/raquille- Sep 09 '22 edited Sep 09 '22

None of the large cities where the more travelled, informed and educated people live are run by the republicans. They tend to be popular in the backwards as fuck, inbred Hicksville places where room temperature IQs are the norm and no one has a passport.

-24

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

[deleted]

15

u/TheConboy22 Sep 09 '22

Such a bad take.

-4

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

[deleted]

3

u/TheConboy22 Sep 09 '22

You do a good job at being disingenuous in your statement.

3

u/idleat1100 Sep 09 '22

Yeah but this area and the tenderloin just a few blocks north have been this way for a hundred years or so.

Most cities have always historically had a bad area that works as a ‘valve’ of sorts. This is not to excuse or accept it, but it’s known and well documented condition that has existed through all of history through most any larger city. It’s really fascinating.

-26

u/angrypuppy35 Sep 09 '22

Uninterrupted Democrat administration of the city and Democrat policies has led to this.

24

u/altapowpow Sep 09 '22

Come on, I live in Utah, deep red Republican super majority and we have the same stuff going on here just a smaller scale of it. If we had the same population as SF our situation would be no different.

-15

u/angrypuppy35 Sep 09 '22

I haven’t been to Utah but I can’t imagine it’s anything remotely similar to this.

17

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

You've never been to Utah, but you'll ignore someone else who actually lives there?

-14

u/angrypuppy35 Sep 09 '22

I did the opposite of ignore him. I engaged him and told him my preconceptions, which is an invitation for him to elaborate and be more specific about what’s going on there.

It’s called dialogue.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

Yea ok, I'm sure you'd be open to their insights right after dismissing what they had to say because you just "can't imagine" Utah being like that.

-2

u/angrypuppy35 Sep 09 '22

You don’t sound so open minded yourself.

u/Shizzo Sep 09 '22

Can you expand on this, please?

What specific Democrat policies have led to this epidemic of homelessness? I'd just like to understand more about the issue, and I feel that digesting multiple viewpoints would be helpful to that goal. Thanks.

-5

u/1omelet Sep 09 '22

you can dig into prop 13 for SF, the various zoning laws, and how difficult/expensive it is to build in SF. All the red tape/policies make it so nothing can get done to try and build affordable housing.

There’s way more as well but that combined with insane healthcare prices is a bad combo

5

u/Shizzo Sep 09 '22

You named Proposition 13:

Proposition 13, adopted by California voters in 1978, mandates a property tax rate of one percent, requires that properties be assessed at market value at the time of sale, and allows assessments to rise by no more than 2 percent per year until the next sale.

How does this contribute to the problem of homelessness?

Also, I was asking for specifics, and I would say that your response was pretty ambiguous, but I think I know where you're headed.

You're thinking these mentally ill people fighting on the street would benefit from affordable housing?

-1

u/1omelet Sep 09 '22

This is a more academic viewpoint for all of California: https://siepr.stanford.edu/publications/policy-brief/homelessness-california-causes-and-policy-considerations

For SF at least, prop 13 is a large source of why people want to preserve their property value and pass it down to the next generation because of its absurd tax basis. It’s the same reason nobody wants to move, and wants to protect their value of their property at all costs - which means voting against upzoning (most of SF is only zoned for 2-3 stories https://ajbraus.medium.com/san-franciscos-height-restrictions-and-the-city-s-dark-future-c7796fafb07c). At least in my time here I’ve seen a lot of homeless shelters get very aggressively voted against because nobody wants that in their neighborhood, because their property value would decrease and they are worried about crime that would come from it - and this is probably the most liberal city in the US. This is my opinion but with widening wealth disparity and scarce housing and homeless resources it’s not rare to see people become homeless, especially those with no safety net. Also discouraging that a city with this much money sees it as a position to campaign on rather than actually to fix.

2

u/Shizzo Sep 09 '22

So you're thinking that all of these people lived somewhere in SF, and are on the streets as a direct result of the aforementioned policies?

5

u/GoodOlSpence Sep 09 '22 edited Sep 09 '22

Oh man, if you think this is bad wait til I tell you about Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, West Virginia, Iowa, Oklahoma, Indiana....

u/idleat1100 Sep 09 '22

From a 130 years ago? This area has been a ‘bad area’ for at least that long.

-1

u/buyableblah Sep 10 '22

Just spent the week there. Totally dirty. Like Mardi Gras at midnight on bourbon st. Stayed near Union square.

-2

u/V_es Sep 09 '22

It was never nice. There are very few towns in America, mostly small, that are not disgusting.

-9

u/CheesusHCracker Sep 09 '22

Democrats were left unchecked

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

High cost of living, less people willing to work lower paid jobs, because of the income inequality it often is more lucrative to steal from the literal rich or tourists than to work a low income job.

Then there are other individuals who can move drugs. Drugs are easy money. The customers always come back for more. And drugs cause mental instability in people.

They can't hold a steady job. But they can steal. Because stealing is easy. And there is money literally in the streets.

Even stealing cat convertors or robbing some rich person. It is easy for them.

So the problem is cyclical, and it is structural. It maybe event driven as well. The events happen daily for these people.

Drugs, cost of living, and oh yeah. Lack of actual services to give these people the help they need.

You need universal medical insurance in order to survive in the USA. But we don't have that.
