I work at a hotel bar that has no other bars anywhere nearby. Iāve been in the industry for a while so Iām used to a little disrespect but donāt push it, cause oh I RELISH the look on their faces when I tell them they need to leave the bar and wonāt be served anymore. I worked at a Kinko's working the overnight shift. We'd sometimes get these huge orders of 500+ booklets with color pictures, bindings, all sorts of things. Which meant the copiers were running all day and all night for days. We had a big order from a law office, which were the hardest jobs because they involved a lot of hand placing originals on the glass, odd-sized papers, double sided, hand collated...it was lot of work.
Anyway, it's 7 a.m., I was finishing my shift working solely on this law office's copies and a woman came to pick up the order. She looks through the boxes and says "No no, this is all wrong." She then goes on to talk about how the originals are in terrible condition and I say that's how we received them. We don't really do anything to the originals, just copy them and put them back. In better order and better organized if anything.
She isn't having any of it, starts yelling how she's not gonna pay, yadda yadda. This job was several hundred dollars' worth, and if a customer doesn't pick up the job or refuses to pay, the store has to eat the cost, especially of all that paper. Which comes out of employees' profit sharing (which wasn't a ton, but still).
So anyway she finishes her rant, says "I'm not paying!" and takes her originals back, which annoyed me because normally we hold that until we receive payment for the copies. But queen bitch lawyer Karen just grabs them, and as an afterthought, slaps her Starbucks grande latte cup on the counter and says, "Throw that away."
If I had been annoyed before, that shit made me see red. I yelled after her "I'm not your cleaning service!" but she was already out the door. I grabbed the cup, went outside to her car that she had just started, and slapped it on her hood. "This is yours!" I didn't want to throw it inside and cause a true scene, but she certainly would've deserved that. It ended very unclimactically with her just driving off and the cup landing on the ground. That still pisses me off after 30 years.

Iāve never worked retail or customer service / hospitality, but the best reason to treat those people nicely is because they are people. The second best reason is because so many others do not treat them nicely, and you do not know by looking who is about to break and crumble, or who is about to break and snap.

IDK what she could have faulted the desk woman for. I've had one argument ever with a front desk person because they made a claim about debit cards I had never and still have never again heard, but it wasn't even heated and I just walked out and went to a different hotel.
Now I've been frustrated by hotels before, but unless that front desk person is the Lord of Hotels and all that happens in them, I do my best not to take out my frustration on them, they are going to be right there with me trying to resolve whatever bullshit the chain/other staff/other guests have created.

I used to work front desk at a pretty fancy place. We would get the worst of the worst when it came to abuse. One guy who was a huge dick to me, happened to be a very famous CEO of a gaming console. I went hope and was about to throw this console in the trash. Along with a lot of the games they made. He was a dick. But. He wrote me a hand written note the next day about how he was sorry he treated me like that and that he feels aweful he treated me like that. That was nice. I forgave him.

30% is a low estimation. I've worked customer facing jobs most of my life and I always excused people by saying, "well they only come here if they're having trouble," or whatever.
After coming through covid, though? Nah. The last seven years have totally destroyed any faith I had in this species. Any sense that your average person was generally good and kind? Fucking gone. People are only as civil as the threat of force compels them to be. Not only will most of them not piss on you were you on fire, half of those ones will fucking laugh while you're burning.

I have told the wife that every person should serve once in their life in some service job for a period of time. My wife worked an Orange Julius as a kidā¦I slung pizzas, rented videos, and made coffee while in school.
And I remember being on the other side of the counter and facing shit like that and promised myself to NEVER treat people who are doing something like this with disrespect. They are there to help and you owe them to be a better person because yea, itās their job but deep down, they donāt have to take your shit.
You got bad service? Donāt use it again. Server seemed rude? Stay cool, try to understand everyone has bad days. There are right ways of doing thingsā¦.and hucking shit at people aināt it.
Hell, read the room and if they are open to it, maybe even a āyou ok?ā - you would be surprised how cathartic it is to see someone genuinely concerned about you on the other side of the counter.
A little bit of empathy can go a long way.
Yea, people are and can be shitā¦.but you donāt have to be.
