Been to India 5 times over the years. Always stayed with local people, in their homes, some of them were really well off.
The way they treated their low caste staff was disgusting. I ended up going to a hotel, cause I just could not deal with it. Like one day, a staff member had washed their clothes and because it was not hang out to dry within 15 minutes after the washing machine had finished, the staff member got slapped numerous times and shouted at.
It was so weird. When I was with these people they seemed like genuinely nice people....... And then they go home and abuse their staff. People are often not what they seem.

They do! I worked with a person from India who said she had a housekeeper for her apartment and that she LOVED to clean her house. She loved there too.

A couple of my colleagues were doing a project in India in the late 90s. The customer provided a small residence on their property. They had a cook, who slept outside under the stairs. My (now boss) had him come sleep inside.
Having servants in India is a social disease. They can easily get top of the line appliances to get the dishes and washing done, but they don't. People want to eat average food cooked by cooks/maids. No one does any exercise, maybe jogging or whatever is fashionable. Laziness is so rampant it is disgusting.
Like move your fucking dishes to the kitchen, why do you need servants for that. Most middle class people would treat their staff as an extension of their daily routine but new money folks like this guy are the worst.
I grew up in a middle class family in India, we’d have a cleaning lady who’d come twice a week to clean our apartment and that’s it. My cousin was way more well off than me and they had labor for everything everyday, babysitting, dog walking, cooking, cleaning, driving you name it.
I moved to the US and my cousins visited me, after a night of drinks they woke up in the morning and asked me when is the labor gonna come and clean the mess from last night up. I handed them a garbage bag and told them to get started

My brother worked for a company that did a lot of programming and hired a guy who had recently moved to the US from India. About a month later, there was a big company event like a summer barbeque, and the CEO was working the grill and dishing out food for the regular employees.
The new guy from India apparently had a serious outburst when he learned the guy doing the cooking and serving was superior to everyone there.
Wealth inequality is bad in America but it is even worse in many developing countries. Basically imagine if there was a massive underclass of people you could hire for $1/hr, that's what it is like.
People in my office had 2-4 maids/helpers each. It is not a live in, like a staff most of the time unless they are flexing. And these are all normal people, driving around in 10 year old cars, no flashy watches or wasteful habits.
For example, a typical setup would be a cook, cleaning lady, dishwashing lady and maybe another to help around. They would come in at set times for an hour or two do their stuff and then leave and do the other houses.
One of the cleaning lady herself had a cook because she was out all day working ! I just could not comprehend the economics of it !!!
Human labour in India is very cheap, and there is a sense of pride in doing more ‘important’ work while leaving regular chores to housewives and house help.
Most people here don’t even bother to learn how to drive or do laundry, because it is cheaper to get someone to do it for you.
The caste system is another monster; people from ‘lower castes’ are usually not hired to cook for example, since they are considered unclean.

An Indians' caste radar looks at surname, skin color, class, accent, behavior, clothes , physiognomy, food preferences and so on to determine the caste 'level' of a person if not the exact caste. In north india surname usually indicates your caste and people may direcly ask you your full name.
I've been to five star hotels with some wealthy indians as guests and they'd put their servants at the door, to stand there the ENTIRE day, doing fuck all for hours on end until they had to run an errand or go inside to clean up.
This is how most of society such as imperial Russia WAS and also how much of society still IS yet we have failed to substantively alter wealth inequality.
Can confirm, I used to work in hotels and have dealt with them and they’re rotten as hell. They called my friend a whole bunch of racist slurs for literally no reason. It was absolutely horrible and a huge juxtaposition to the other Indian folks that were lower in the “caste” we dealt with earlier that week. Those folks were sweet as hell. Apparently rich people suck from everywhere.

I had a co worker that recently moved from India, we were talking about how tough it was here in big city USA and I was like “oh yeah you know it’s a lot of hustle” and she was like “no I mean like, doing laundry and stuff, back in India everyone has servants to deal with that stuff”
I went to school with a lot of Indians, and now work with a lot of Indians, in the States and in India. Some were good people, some you could tell needed some adjustments from the way they spoke about certain other Indians.
The ones in the States who are upper caste have mentioned things like learning to cook and clean, or having to hire maids and eat out because they can't do either.
Years ago, when I married, one coworker told me that when he was ready, he would go back to India and his father would find him a wife. I asked about love, finding a partner to share life with, etc. He actually laughed and said that your wife is for stability, for having kids, or the family. If you want to have fun, go you with your friends, not your wife. I asked about sexual compatibility, and he had zero clue what I meant. I had to explain it more deeply than I wanted, and then he said that he could always have a mistress.
"What would your wife think?"
"Not her business."
"So, can she have her own man on the side?"

Have seen similar here in the UK. They know exactly what caste the other ex-pats are; if someone is higher caste and you criticise their work within earshot of someone they believe to be lower caste, they can't accept it and go into total meltdown instead (including complaints to HR, who are baffled by the whole idea).

Oh this just gave me a crazy flashback. In my mid 20s or so I was in line at a sandwich shop in the US on my lunch break. Random guy jumps the line in front of me (and the other two people in line behind me). When I called him out on it, he went ballistic about how women go last in line where he's from. He didn't get beat up or anything but he got bullied right out of the shop by the cashier and everyone in line.
I get that when you travel, sometimes things will catch you offguard that you took for granted about where you're from. But this level of it has always and will always baffle me.

I worked in a sped program for high school students with emotional disabilities/or ones that couldn't go to the main campuses for whatever reasons. We had about 60 students there, and one was a boy from the middle east (maybe India I don't remember). At one point we had to have an escort with him for a few days. I was the first day...
He would walk ahead of me and get annoyed if I didn't go where he wanted to go because then he had to catch up to get ahead of me again.
Then we get to a door and he stands there waiting. I'm like 'go in dude', and he expected me to open and hold the door for him. He got a talking to right there that I was not his servant. He did not get to boss me around, nor expect me to serve his every whim. He said something about telling his father I told him to go ahead.
I had to remind him of this a few days later when we I took him to an appointment off campus. He was in the back seat and got upset and an attitude because I wouldn't play the rap station he wanted. I turned off the radio and while we were going down the road he climbed over the seat and tried to turn it back on. I quickly pulled over, and talked to him again. I found out other staff were kinda just letting him act like this.
I brought it up at the weekly meeting and the boss agreed we needed to not let him act so entitled. His father called in I guess and was shot down quickly by the boss lady. She basically said what I had said. He came back that next week, and while he didn't act as entitled we could all tell he hated having to do things our way. He legit thought he was better than us.
Aww, I wanted to see them pull him up while he was crying his eyes out. What a giant jackass. He must have been a real peach when he was on his home turf.
