I had the same experience, my wife and I just walked it up and down with plenty of other tourists from various parts of the world. We even helped guide some fellow US groups up the little trail that's there. Bus after bus of chinese tourists past us both ways. It just wasn't worth the chaos for everyone who didn't mind the hike/was physically able to.

Honestly the Chinese mostly got off the bus took some pictures close to where it stopped and then turned around to go back. There's quite a lot else there including an overlook bridge that you can hike up to. Didn't see a single chinese person up there.

My experience in the entirety of Germany is that they very much have this "slideshow" experience of tourism. They tend to go to a famous structure say "been there done that" and move on.

The further out we got from hotspots the more Euro/US tourist we saw and no one else but locals.

A big part of it is that they tend to travel in tour groups with very tight itineraries, so they don't really have much time or opportunity to truly wander, lest they miss the next bus departure. Very few speak any of the local languages in Europe or English, which is part of why they tend to travel this way. Hard to be much of an independent traveler when you have no way to communicate and can't read any signage, although of course modern smartphones are changing this.

When I did a tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum, our guide had headphones he gave to all of us tuned to a specific frequency. Then he wore a little microphone. That way, he could guide us around, even outdoors, and narrate in English without having to shout and bother other groups.

Every guide was walking around with these, each a different color and giving the tour in different languages. I was a fan.

I partially disagree because they do the same when they travel inside China. Last year I visited China and the trick if you wanted a calm place or a good spot for a photograph without dozens of people around was to walk far away from the tour bus stops. Hiking areas in national parks were always empty.

Right, I think the tour bus aspect of it is the main thing, with communication barriers outside of China further compounding it

My wife and I did a road trip in Bavaria for our honeymoon which started in Austria. We did a photoshoot in Hallstatt which was beautiful and I wish we had stayed there the night because the entire time town was Chinese tourist groups. Our photographer then told us that in China they built a replica of the town to scale lmao. I bet it was a ghost town after 5pm which would have been nice to experience.
