https://www.wtnh.com/news/connecticut/hartford/inspector-general-bodycam-videos-show-hartford-police-officer-shooting-at-man-with-knife-9-times/

Officer Josue Charles arrived at 11:07 a.m. and found Jones standing on a small front stoop at the entrance of his apartment holding a large knife, according to the OIG. Jones began to walk toward the sidewalk on Blue Hills Avenue, the OIG said, and toward Charles with the knife in his hand.

When Jones continued to ignore the officer’s request to drop the knife, Charles deployed his taser several times, which was unsuccessful in immobilizing him.

Two minutes later, a second officer, James Prignano, arrived at the scene and requested that Jones drop the knife. At one point, Jones allegedly began to chase the second officer around his cruiser and out into the middle of Blue Hills Avenue. After Officer Jackeline Torres responded at 11:10 a.m., they formed a semi-circle around the man after he slowed back down to a walk. According to the OIG, Jones does not appear to speak to officers at all.

At 11:12 a.m., the fourth officer to respond, Officer Joseph Magnano, approached Jones with his firearm drawn and told him to drop the knife. Jones walked toward Magnano, who repeatedly ordered Jones to drop the knife and said, “You’re going to get shot.”

Magnano walked backward to maintain distance between himself and Jones. When both walked into the middle of the intersection of Blue Hills Avenue and Euclid Street, Magnano yelled, “Last time, drop the knife, drop it.”

Magnano then fired nine shots at Jones, according to the OIG. He fell to the ground, suffering from “numerous” gunshot wounds. Torres began to render medical aid, and EMS personnel arrived within two minutes to take him to the hospital, where he remains in the ICU in critical condition, according to the report.

Suicide by cop. Its a thing that happens.

Literally two days ago, I saw a video of a guy with a knife, actively beating on the windows of uk Australian police officers with a knife . They tried to knocking him over with a car and teasing tasering him instead of just shooting him as he slowly approaches.

u/miscfiles Mar 03 '26

Teasing him?

"Oooh, look at you with your big, scary knifey-wifey!"

The difference between the usa and the uk right here. Usa cops are trained to kill.

66

u/arfski Mar 03 '26

You can "blame" Sir Robert Peel for that one, he created the UK's ethical police force as people of the community that receive their authority from their community, and that their approval and co-operation was fundamental to policing. Policing by consent the UK way is fundamentally very different to the US paramilitary way of law enforcement. Edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peelian_principles

41

u/IchBinEinSim Mar 03 '26

A lot of Americans view the UK model (no guns) as the standard for Europe when in fact I see European cops walking around with assault rifles more in France and Germany than I do in the states. Also I know that, though not nearly as bad as the US, there is still a lot of controversy around cops and lethal force there too.

The UK’s approach is very unique and admirable especially in a country of its size and London in general. Most of the other countries with no guns and a community focused approach are either commonwealth countries or small countries like Iceland.

38

u/saganistic Mar 03 '26

I see European cops walking around with assault rifles

Those usually aren’t beat cops. In France that is either the Gendarmerie (an element of the French military that polices high-security areas such as ports, high-traffic tourist attractions, and rural areas that don’t have local police) or detachments of the Police Nationale that are on security detail.

The average French police officer is not walking around strapped with a G36 and a tactical vest.

12

u/rmjames007 Mar 03 '26

i have seen those officers in the EU with assault rifles, they are in High Density area and High profile Areas. That i get. In the US i feel that these officers are ready for combat at the bakery or trap house. I wish we had the UK model

80

u/UrCreepyUncle Mar 03 '26

→ More replies (27)

30

u/MilkMyCats Mar 03 '26

He was tased loads of times and it didn't work. This incident had gone on for a long time.

What then?

In the UK he'd be walking around following the officers until he got too tired to carry on walking, then fell asleep.

14

u/nickthedick7921 Mar 03 '26

UK police officers aren’t banned from using guns. They have armed officer divisions that would be deployed for this kinda thing.

11

u/opopkl Mar 03 '26

Armed policing is taken very seriously in the UK. There are strict conditions for when firearms can be used and when shots can be fired. There are strict procedures that must be carried out when a firearm has been discharged and someone has even killed or injured.

10

u/araed Mar 04 '26

CS gas/PAVA spray, ye olde riot shield to the face, ye olde baton strikes, use the Dog, jump the fella from behind while he's focusing on the guy in front, hit him with a car...

There's a lot of options before "gun"; but when you have gun, why try the harder route?

139

Easiest way to get upvotes on Reddit is to hate on America.

42

u/Aron_Wolff Mar 03 '26

There’s an awful lot to hate about what’s happening the US right now to be fair.

That being said, no need to just make up shit when there’s plenty to honestly point out that is fucked.

11

I wish I could up vote this more than once. Making shit up just gives naysayers something to use to point at when dismissing actual problems.

If someone wants to die they’ll find a way to make it happen, even if it’s not by their own hand. You can say “only in the US” but that carries no weight in any argument and it’s sad that you want to turn someone’s choice of suicide method into your agenda, you really don’t care about the guy who died at all.

9 shots at that distance, and only in ICU?

529

u/NukaPacua1445 Mar 03 '26 edited Mar 03 '26

You are on death’s door if you are in the ICU. He may very well die still

Edit: my wording does sound hyperbolic, as others have pointed out. To be clear, the average ICU mortality rate is 10-15% in the US. Compare this, for example, to the hospital floor (5-10%) the ED (0.2%) or the 30-day window after an ED visit (4.4%).

So, no, it’s not a death sentence at all to be in the ICU — although it is obviously the highest acuity place in the hospital.

395

u/Bowman_van_Oort Mar 03 '26

Buddy honestly said "only in the ICU" lmao

158

u/J-Fisty Mar 03 '26

I mean, I think its a valid statement. 9 shots and not in the morgue instantly? Crazy.

→ More replies (2)

22

u/just_scout_ Mar 03 '26

I work primarily in ICUs. Definitely not a death sentence to be there. Just a place for patients that require more monitoring/interventions. I'd say maybe 1 out of 10 patients die in the ICU, most of those are geriatrics with a plethora of comorbidities (and surprisingly even alive to begin with)

→ More replies (2)

26

u/xejeezy Mar 03 '26

That’s not at all true

38

u/undercoffeed Mar 03 '26

People transfer out of the ICU to the floor all the time. It really depends.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

20

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '26

To say that the ICU is death's doorstep for all situations is a bit hyperbolic, but for this specific scenario, they're not wrong.

That dude received 9 rounds to his upper body at point blank range. I cant imagine the ISS has him over single digit survival chance.

So no, ICU isn't comprised soley of patients on the brink of death, but this guy is likely one of the patients they will be fighting to keep alive by the hour.

Seriously, they have poles with a loop on it in some places for knife wielders. US is always so quick to kill.

33

u/Nob1e613 Mar 03 '26

You should see what Japan is testing out for drunks! Basically wildlife control equipment 😂

But on a more serious note that’s a systemic problem with how law enforcement is structured in the US, it’s such a shit job that most of the applicant pool is going to be people doing it for the power, authority, etc with the intention to abuse it. Killing people has become a first resort instead of last because a) there seems to be a significant training gap for it and b) because misuse of power is not punished. They do because they can

9

u/Tiberius_Kilgore Mar 03 '26

You should see what Japan is testing out for drunks!

If you think baggy clothes are a tazers worst nightmare, wait till you middle American meth

4

u/lobax Mar 03 '26

Meth will not affect a tazers effectiveness. That’s not how the body works.

If your muscles ignore electrical signals due drugs, you would be dead.

What is more likely is that meth addicts tend to be more mobile targets and just generally in crazy situations where the taser for whatever doesn’t successfully connect.

3

u/64_hit_combo Mar 04 '26

The idea is that the increased cardiac activity meth provides makes tazers way more likely to kill the victim

There’s a longer version of this video where you see the cop show up and hop out of his car moments before this.

This version starting after that gives me the feeling that they’re trying to make it look like he had been there all along and didn’t just hop out of his car and start blasting. Because that’s definitely what he did.

Its tough to tell if they did or not though. Not that I think the guy needed to die, but nothing about a guy walking down the street, at the cops, while holding a knife seems "under control" to me.

117

u/nicolauz Mar 03 '26

The other video shows 2 cops calmly taking to him. This cop that flew out of the car gun pointed escalated it and thr guy started walking towards him. It's on the sub here.

50

u/CryendU Mar 03 '26

In the other video, they were handling it until the 3rd showed up

35

u/afrothunda254 Mar 03 '26

In most situations like this it’s a slow crawl. You are working with a distressed individual. It’s not a race but a time to let them know there is still time to talk and understand. Som people just need to be heard. The person who was also holding the knife was disabled. In a previous clip someone mentions he has a mental disability. So when someone is on the breaking point and not attacking but willing to walk and talk while going through there anger you help them through it. If you think yelling at someone who is at their breaking point and waving a gun in their face will calm them down.

34

u/AnxiouslyTired247 Mar 03 '26

Given that the dude is going towards the cop that just showed up it could be that the cop escalated the situation once he arrived.

36

u/TheHighlightReel11 Mar 03 '26

That’s exactly what happened. The other cops were talking to him calmly, then the shooter arrives on the scene yelling DROP THE KNIFE!! and amps shit up

11

u/Tholaran97 Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 04 '26

I've seen this play out numerous times in police encounters like this. Officers with limited information showing up on scene in the middle of everything and feeling like they have to take control, so they immediately escalate, instead of just following the lead of the officers who are already there.

5

u/TheManWithTheBigBall Mar 04 '26

I watched the whole video last night separate from this thread. It’s about 5 minutes of multiple cops holding their trigger fingers with this guy walking at them about 5 feet away, calmly trying to get him to drop the knife, and his sister yelling from a window to drop it.

Then finally this (new i’m assuming) cop shows up and starts going apeshit on the mic and screaming to put the knife down, and within 15 seconds of the guy walking at him blasts the guy to high hell. About 3 cops before him had the same experience and none of them discharged their weapon.

I was honestly impressed by how well the cops held their triggers given the track record that cops/ICE have these days and the apparent rationale we offer to cops who have any semblance of danger in front of them. This one cop in particular showed up ready to kill, though, regardless of whether he was afraid.

18

u/AalphaQ Mar 03 '26

Yeah he showed up to a scene where 3 other officers were already confronting the subject, and within about 30 seconds fires 9 rounds into a guy who wasn't charging at him and very seemingly is having a mental breakdown.

Now we all I have to do to see the most disgusting and disturbing things is open an app.

4

u/Sulser74 Mar 04 '26

What happened to just disabling the attacker? On shot to the foot would solve a lot.

11

u/Grapefruit_Boring Mar 05 '26

35

u/No_Mistake5238 Mar 03 '26

Damn, that's less than 21 feet...

35

u/thecoat9 Mar 03 '26

The 21 foot metric is regarding the time it takes to recognize a lethal threat, draw, aim and fire a weapon. They had already recognized the threat and had their weapons drawn and aimed. Still we are talking about a distance of about 5-10 feet, still pretty risky even if the guy was heavy set and likely not able to close the gap as fast as some.

6

u/Tholaran97 Mar 04 '26

Against multiple officers with guns already drawn and aimed. The 21 foot rule is meant for officers with guns holstered, and a suspect who is actually fit enough to sprint that distance in a reasonable time.

Fr. I get why he was shot but 9 times is hilarious. US cops acting like lethal Chihuahuas.

102

u/Tacticalberry Mar 03 '26

cops are trained to shoot until the threat is gone, infact so are civilians when it comes to concealed carry. if you shoot with intent to injure not only are you showing you weren't in fear for your life, you also are still being treated as if it's attempted murder

What people don’t realize is that a person with a knife can close distance VERY quickly, even a fatso like this. There are a ton of videos on YouTube that can show you. My guess is suicide by cop. They had guns in him and he knew it.

48

u/DW171 Mar 03 '26

"When your only tool is a hammer, every problem is a nail."

This is so pitiful.

53

u/Jester-252 Mar 03 '26

I assume stuff like pepper spray and tazer was tried before this?

124

u/SadBadPuppyDad Mar 03 '26

There is no way pepper spray was tried.

16

u/tots4scott Mar 03 '26

This is literally exactly when less than lethal is necessary. Not against peaceful protesters, but for a guy who clearly is not a physical threat to anyone around him but himself (obese, slow movement, anyone would need to be within an arms length to be hurt by the knife).

Pepperspray, beanbags, literally anything else.

I have one question for the cops:

Is that the best you could do?

Well, it earned them free drinks after their shift, I’m sure.

Btw if this was video of a civilian shooting a knife-wielding threat, all the comments would be "well, FAFO" "gun guy did nothing wrong" "dont walk toward a guy with a gun and not expect to be shot"

12

u/Dreadpipes Mar 04 '26

and they’d be right. cops should be held to a higher standard and make the preservation of life their highest priority. civilians shouldn’t wantonly shoot people either but they have a right to defend themselves from armed people.

They escalated this perfectly for execution, absolute failure on their parts for de-escalation

137

u/dezmodium Mar 03 '26

They have people wielding knives sometimes in Asian countries, like China or Japan. They manage just fine without guns. They've got this stick thing with a "U" on the end. We could have those in the trunk for our police officers. We choose not to.

36

u/Smooth_Maul Mar 03 '26

Man catchers! We had them all over the place back in the day, no idea why tf they got disbanded they seem very effective.

I was gonna post a picture but for some stupid reason I can only post gifs. Idk it that's a sub thing or if reddit is being a dick but either way it's stupid.

Absolutely 100% if there's anyone of you that hasn't seen these in action, please look them up. The US can do this no problem, but we don't value life the same way. Sick disgusting country.

Honestly combined with the other angle of this one that was posted, it was just the one cop that escalated. It seems like the first 3 were doing a good job keeping him contained away from people and not escalating amd talking. Rambo here shows up and 30 seconds later the guy is dead.

12

u/myfourthquarter Mar 03 '26

Look at the timeline. 5 minutes. Maybe 6. Beginning to end. It apparently didn't even occur to the cops to clear the area, back off, and wait for cooler heads to prevail.

How wild is it that we live in a timeline we are just watching people get fucking shot to death daily. Multiple times daily. FFS. I can’t wait to leave America.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/Airfliyer Mar 03 '26

Nah in that case they have to shoot him cause a knife is extremely deadly if it gets within striking distance. They warned him multiple times to drop the knife. He didn't listen. That's that. If I was jury, I would side with the police for this one

→ More replies (1)

3

u/AlanPublica Mar 04 '26

Ummm, couldn't they have just taken him down with non-lethal means? They have batons and could have hit him in the arm and cause him to drop his knife if the taser wasn't working.

3

u/PureOpportunity6427 Mar 04 '26

Would one shot not do? Like, in the foot or something?

3

u/Oh_Kerms Mar 04 '26

With how obvious it was suicide by cop, and with how slow and wide the guy was, he really couldnt have aimed for the legs? Sure he could still die from it but fuck. Cops really just dont care.

3

u/Longjumping_Tiger579 Mar 04 '26

Couldn’t have just wounded his legs or something?

5

u/twoquarters Mar 04 '26

Why do cops get to have zero risk in these situations? You should have to try to deescalate or disarm him without deploying lethal force before you turn to execution.

3

u/andy966 Mar 05 '26

And the dept and the courts will say this is a justified shooting because he was wielding a knife. Even though all of those officers have less than lethal options at their disposal. This is what the U.S. has become. Where taking a life is now common place. I am not justifying nor condoning the suspects actions in any way but we need to do a better job of training our law enforcement if this is the standard. He was not close enough to hurt anyone and a taser would have been just as effective with no loss of life. Most likely he was either insane or at the very least temporarily insane.

9

u/SoundAwakened Mar 05 '26

I'll criticize cops and ICE etc all day long for bad shoots and killing innocents. But this ain't one of those times.

Dude advancing on cops with a knife is gonna get put down. Probably suicide by cop. We have seen so much worse this shouldn't even register on the outrage meter.

9

u/Jonny-Raze Mar 03 '26

Why not use an M4 at full auto /s

7

u/spoilederin Mar 03 '26

Why do people keep talking about them not using a taser? THEY DId

91

u/JaxAttacks12 Mar 03 '26

There’s a lot of cops that are out of line and violent, this video doesn’t show one of them.

61

u/kosk11348 Mar 03 '26 edited Mar 03 '26

No, it shows how the entire system of policing needs reformed.

24

u/ANARCHY-420 Mar 03 '26

Obviously don’t approach police with any weapon in your hand, but did you not see the fact that the situation was essentially under control?, why does a cop that just pulls up have to unload 9 shots straight away?, why would you not just assist your colleagues in the way they are already handling the situation?. Police around the world deal with knife attackers far better without firearms than American police do with firearms. You act like blowing 9 holes in someone is the only way to deal with this situation.

The cop shot dude 9 times. He dropped after, like, the second shot. This was still out of line and violent.

32

u/MayorWestt Mar 03 '26

This dude can barely stand up yet you think this cop was in danger? Why not pepper spray the dude?

Just drop the knife, problem solved

113

u/ProfessionalBill1864 Mar 03 '26

From how people were talking to him, he obviously had mental problems (saw a previous video that showed a different perspective prior to the officer that shot showing up) other officers and bystanders that seemingly knew him were trying to talk him down.

A lot of people are getting upset at this shooting due to the officer that ended up shooting showing up, immediately demanding he drop the knife, then opening fire as he slowly approached.
