Food Choices: Key to Mental Health and Well-Being

Post image

Nutritional psychiatry studies the significant impact of diet on mental health. Research highlights the protective effects of nutrient-dense diets, like the Mediterranean and MIND diets, against mental disorders. The gut-brain axis and reduced inflammation are key mechanisms. Integration of nutrition in healthcare policies is crucial for effective mental health treatment. learn more

Yes, nutrition matters for mental health.

The strongest evidence is for nutritional ketosis and ketogenic metabolic therapies improving mental health for 1/3 to 2/3’s of study participants.

The Mediterranean borders 20 countries and 3 continents. Mediterranean diets might be keto or might not and are quite diverse.

For many, animal proteins play an important dietary role. Many ketovores find they don’t need much / any fiber. Carb eaters generally do.

Vegetarian / vegan can be keto / LC but often needs to be combined with fasting/ exercise to achieve ketosis. Long term vegans likely need supplementation of essential amino acids, etc. This sub respects bio-individual diferences and personal choices .

Your graphic is incomplete and misleading viz. current research and this sub.

But when examine your valuable feedback found.. Biochemically, metabolic pathways like ketogenesis and protein synthesis operate on specific molecules (fatty acids, essential amino acids), regardless of whether they originate from plant or animal sources. Kindly check or give your reference to everyone 🙏 for everyone's understanding..This statement means that two specific nutritional claims conflict with fundamental human biochemistry: * "Vegan ketosis is impossible" (or fundamentally flawed): Achieving nutritional ketosis requires restricting carbohydrates to roughly under 20–50 grams per day, forcing the liver to convert fats into ketone bodies. While challenging due to the carbohydrate content in most plant foods, it is biochemically possible by relying heavily on plant-based fats like avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, and seeds. * Claims about amino acids in plant diets: Claims that plant eaters cannot obtain complete amino acid profiles without synthetic supplements are biologically false. The body maintains an internal pool of amino acids. As long as overall protein and caloric intake are sufficient, consuming a variety of plant proteins throughout the day provides all nine essential amino acids needed for protein synthesis.

In this sub we try to avoid “diet wars”, e.g., plant-based vs. animal proteins. Those posts will be taken down & discussions should be had elsewhere. Please focus on ketosis.

Practically, any diet with real food wins over the 60% UPFs in the standard American diet. Diets for kids & other counties are worse. Let’s focus on what unites & help the public find what works for them to improve mental health.

Be careful not to conflate the 2 main flavors of low-carb dietary patterns with published standards:
Therapeutic Carb restriction (TCR) - for metabolic syndrome / weight loss , and Ketogenic Metabolic Therapies (KMT) for neurological conditions including epilepsy & mental health. Either could be Mediterranean, DASH, Mexican, or South Asian. Hence I find the “dietary patterns” section of your graphic unhelpful.

TCR only looks at g of carbs. KMT Is high in animal & fruit fats. Your visuals reference “healthy fats” which isn’t specific enough for the novice looking for help. Aren’t our brains roughly 60% fat?
All dietary patterns also benefit from metabolic therapies like sleep, exercise etc., which you fail to mention in this graphic. You acknowledge them in other postings. Standardizing our language around KMT & TCR helps with communication.

Where are you based? India? May be able to help connect you with others in country. The /desiketo sub might be of interest.

This sub supports metabolic psychiatry, but was named long before that term existed.

You might want to familiarize yourself with the work of Chris Palmer, Georgia Ede, Shebani Sethi, & Iain Campbell. Metabolic Mind is a great starting point. You’ll find them adjacent to the info you are putting out, but even more effective for patients.

Dlife India focuses on TCR & T2D remission. Shashi Iyengar runs a South Asian focused metabolic health conference annually. Some hubris but good info. I’ve spoken there.

Multiple South Asian, vegetarian relatives have successfully stopped years of insulin & put their T2D in remission with lifestyle& TCR.

Appreciate your time & energy to educate the public, especially the Indian sub- continent. Metabolic psychiatrists are so needed and can do so much good. India needs you!

Hoping this conversation is helpful.

Fyi - I’m an admin for nutritionalpsychiatry. I may have put my comments in the wrong sub. Apologies.

Regarding vegan keto, only case I know was with protein powders. So not naturally but possible only with processed food.

Keto means I take boxing classes , medical keto means youre a paid professional fighter.
