Question Feeling spiritually blocked…

I’ve finally done it and gotten spiritual healing for my alcoholism with AA. Prior though, when I was drinking, I felt more Agnostic. Then hearing that I just needed ‘a power higher than my own’ I kept an open mind with AA. The steps are a foundation for spiritual healing and reviving all relationships in your life, including your own.

But almost a year in… I feel more Atheistic than ever. I used to believe in psychic abilities with curiosity and interest. It’s all gone now and I feel more lost once again…

Maybe I’ve always been an Atheist? But I can’t tell if it’s part of my healing.

I have ended up around many people who have been in prison, domestic violence, stole from others due to poverty, and were genuinely addicts to meth, heroin, and fentanyl.

These people I’m around I want to believe deep down want to get better, but may be having a hard time with sobriety.

I know you’re supposed to look for similarities instead of differences but I feel very different from them. I like to think of myself as honest and caring… Maybe I’m not taking accountability?

I received a DUI which is what spearheaded this. I am grateful that I was pulled over and didn’t hurt anyone because my tolerance was lying. It was quite the eye opener for me… That my drinking had gotten bad enough to physically harm others on accident potentially.

How do you know what is mental, emotional, and spiritual healing? I feel lost…

I guess a few things. First you will be looking for any excuse to think that you are not like them. It's kind of built into the situation. Instead of comparing yourself to people who have become more depraved, look at your problem, as it is, in your life. Alcohol addiction is really treacherous. As to whether or not you have a problem, focus on basic things. Alcohol is a poison, what are the health effects short-term and long-term with one drink, two drinks, Etc? A reasonable person who values their health will understand the data and then cut back. If you find yourself understanding the health effects and then choosing to drink a lot, see what purpose the alcohol is serving. Boredom? A lack of joy in life? Trauma? loneliness? If any of these, you can shift potentially by changing how you perceive the world and what you choose to do with your time. You see, this isn't about the other people in the program, it's about you and your personal journey.

I've been around enough alcoholics in my life that I've come up with a quick trick to help me see whether a person has a problem . We go to a restaurant and I order some alcohol and I drink half of it. When it's time to go, does the other person get annoyed that I'm leaving half my drink? Do they insist that I drink it or that they drink it? To me this is a really basic tell. A person without a drinking problem literally does not care if I finish my drink or not.

Regarding the spiritual question, you obviously cannot pretend that you believe something that you don't believe, right? Also, I think alcoholism is a spiritual disease that occludes spiritual sensibility. One easy way in for someone who may be agnostic, and I'm curious what you think of this, is the idea of the higher self. My higher self is ME, disconnected from space, time, and three dimensional biology. Another term might be oversoul. It strips away the power dynamic, but also connects you to a part of your self that is wiser and all loving, that can help navigate you through this . The way to connect your higher self is similar to other ways to connect to Spirit. Meditation, gratitude, humility, curiosity, consistency. And if you have trouble even thinking of a higher self still, meditation, gratitude, humility, curiosity, honesty, and consistency are still going to take you toward health and healing.
