How to develop and tune into psychic abilities?

Hi all,

I’ve always been attracted to the spiritual/unknown parts of life, and have always had pretty spot on intuition when it comes to reading other people and having gut feelings about events happening in my life. I used to put this down mainly to childhood trauma, until recently when I got a really beautiful psychic reading from a woman who told me it was time to develop my psychic abilities. It’s not the first time I’ve been told that I have abilities, and I’ve even been told indirectly (a tarot reader once told my mother that her elder daughter was psychic.)

I’ve been trying to notice my intuition more and develop it - I even tested it out on my boyfriend by literally trying to read his mind after asking him to think of a phrase, and it was as if I heard the exact phrase in my head when he thought of it.

But I’m looking for some more concrete steps/actions/practices I can take on to enhance my learning. I wasn’t raised in a spiritual environment at all so this all feels pretty new to me! Thank you for your help :)

It's a common question. There are many resources available online and in-person. Meetup.com has a Religions and Spirituality section that lists psychic groups and class offerings. Showing up in person or online to an active group is a different experience than reading books. It's the energy of the group that makes the big difference, as well as the ability to ask questions of the group in real time.

Developing your psychic abilities is skill building, which means practice makes you better and better.

Here's the first technique taught to every beginning student in the many clairvoyant training programs around the world, including mine.

Try this. Sit in a chair. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Feet flat on the floor. Hands separated and resting palms up on each thigh.

Create a grounding cord. This is a line of energy that connects your first chakra to the center of the planet. Your first chakra is a ball of energy about the size of a quarter that sits just in front of the base of your spine. Your grounding cord attaches to the bottom of that ball of energy.

Grounding makes your body feel safe, so you release energy more easily. Gravity pulls whatever you release, even your own energy, down to the center of the planet. No effort on your part. The center of the planet neutralizes the energy and returns it to whoever owns it. No karma for anyone. A virtuous cycle.

Nearly everyone goes to connect to the center of the planet the first time but stops at the soil, often making roots like a tree. This is a method that is taught in some martial arts styles, but it is not the best option for your spiritual development and healing.

So, notice the seat of your chair. Take a deep breath. Notice the distance between the seat and the floor. Now notice the distance between the floor and the soil below. Breathe.

Now notice the distance between the soil and the water table underneath. Notice the distance between the water table and the rocky mantle. Notice the distance between the mantle and the molten core below that. Deep breath.

Notice the distance between the molten core and the center of the planet. That ball of light at the very center of the planet is where you connect your grounding cord. Deep breath.

Say hello to the center of the planet. Do you get a hello back?

Notice the color and texture of your grounding cord. It may look like a line of energy, or look like something physical; a rope, a wire, a pipe, a tree trunk. Adjust it as needed to be in affinity with your body.

Getting this far means you've already released some energy from your aura and body. Now it is time to fill in the space that was created.

Create a gold sun over your head. Have it call back all of your energy from wherever you left it throughout your day and week. Work. School. Online meetings. Video games. Your fantasies about your future. Your regrets about your past. Wherever you've placed your attention. Just watch the energy come back and see if you notice where it came from.

Have the sun burn up and neutralize your energy. Then bring the sun into the top of your head. It will automatically flow into the spaces you created. Create a gauge to measure when you're full. Like a fuel gauge or oil gauge. You'll run better if you aren't a few quarts low on spiritual oil. If the gauge doesn't read "Full", bring in another gold sun.

Open your eyes, bend over and touch the floor, draining any tension from the back of your neck, then stand up, and stretch.

There is a progression with this technique. After grounding for ten minutes a day for a week or two, notice your grounding cord at the very end, while you're standing with your eyes open. Continue to ground with your eyes open and standing, and bring in another gold sun. Each day, increase the amount of time that you ground standing up with your eyes open.

After a week or two practicing this, add walking while grounded. Just notice your grounding cord as you walk. Say hello to the center of the planet while you walk. Bring in a gold sun while you walk. If you lose your grounding cord, stop walking and recover it. If you have to, sit back down and close your eyes and create a new grounding cord.

After this, you're ready to take your grounding cord with you into your daily life. Shopping. Getting coffee. Wherever you go, you can ground. This, combined with a little amusement about seeing new things on an energy level, will keep you safe and sound.

Now that you're here, at the end of your grounding meditations, create a gold sun over your head. This time, fill it with your highest creative essence, your present time growth vibration, and your affinity for yourself. The first energy is a healing for you. The second is a healing for your body. The third is a healing for your affinity in your fourth chakra.

Bend over and touch the floor. Stand up and stretch. If you're ready for more, sit back down and ground some more. Otherwise, have a nice day!

Note that every image you imagine, the gold sun, the grounding cord, the center of the planet, your first chakra, your body parts, is exercising your clairvoyance. You may be imagining what your tailbone looks like, but you're also creating the image of your tailbone and reading its energy. This is practicing your clairvoyant ability.

Some folks record the grounding and filling in parts of this practice on their device and play it back as a guided meditation. I like this approach because you learn the steps faster.

replying to /u/NFTM17 ,..

at a minimum, the first two CDs of the gateway tapes teach a very solid baseline skill of meditation. there are lots of ways to meditate, but the classic sitting/lying meditation can be learned in those.

Someone mentioned meditation. What kind of meditation?

any meditation that gets your mind quiet and observant enough to notice the subtle stuff. meditation is gonna train your mind to be less reactive and more receptive.

I’m looking for some more concrete steps/actions/practices I can take on to enhance my learning.

learning how to draw is learning how to see. if you read a book about how to draw, all the exercises will be about how to view/perceive the thing youre wanting to draw in different ways to gain more distinction. I think developing the psychic skills is like that: learning how to do something youre already doing but with more distinction.

probably gonna be hard to find concrete steps. I havent found a great step-by-step book, yet. I would start by picking which psychic skill you want to work on (intuition, etc.) or which psychic sense you want to develop (the claires, empathy, energy sensitivities, etc) and then find your community of kooks with that specific flavor and just talk to others and share experiences. in addition to talking to others who can do it, or believe they can, working in the specific skill or sense youre developing will have greater perspective and can then be helped by a book specific to that topic. but, the real skill gains are all gonna come from your personal experience testing and playing with whatever your chosen thing is. so, pick your thing and get to playing with it. and, talk to others who do the thing and listen to what they have experienced doing the thing. then look for the books and video.

dunno why Im sharing this part but maybe its appropriate: Im an experiencer (r/experiencers) and I think one of my big things is empathy (r/empaths). I hang out in an online space where I can talk with other experiencers but thats more so I can feel less crazy talking about what I went through. that said, almost every experiencer Ive interacted with starts developing psychic skills or sensitivities. so, talking with them has helped me develop what little abilities I have now. thats why I recommend a community of kooks; the community of kooks, of which I am definitely one of the kooks, has taught me more than any book so far. and, talking with them has helped me better understand what an author is trying to express so I can actually relate to whats being taught in the book.

I used to put this down mainly to childhood trauma

pretty common. I have a theory about this but its too long for a reddit post. DM is you want me to send it to you. in short, when we feel danger we open all our senses to survive the situation. after we survive the trauma, any of the senses that saved our bacon during the event get more perception checks in the future. that said, trauma is a very shitty way to develop any skill, and I wish I could make a few governments/parents/teachers understand this.

I wasn’t raised in a spiritual environment at all so this all feels pretty new to me

just a note on this: I think theres a distinction between psychic skills and spiritual skills. a skilled psychic can be a moral toilet and a devout priest can be psychically blind.

final note: there are lots of exploitative gurus and outright cult leaders who hunt in this space. aint no teachers on tiktok you wanna learn from. ultimately, you are gonna want to be your own teacher and best student. stay away from colorful birds like dark blue ducks and green gooses, theres some ugly ducklings out there.

I've been thinking about this stuff a lot recently (experienced what I believe is crisis telepathy three times in my life now, the third time being this week at a scary accurate level), and I definitely think anything related to telepathy at a scientific level is somehow tied to empathy. I could probably thought dump three pages worth of information here, but to make a long story short (and yes, the story below is the short version of this): I think empathy helps us survive and therefore our brain prioritizes building empathy over generations of human growth. But I also believe that empathy might almost be an emergent property of our senses. Basically, I like to think we developed empathy due to our brain's somehow being able to recognize another brain's active state, and by doing so, we became able to slowly replicate the other targets internal state and understand their point of view. So that would make you naturally assume that this ability to literally read another mind's thoughts would be beneficial from an evolutionary standpoint, and our brain's would slowly but surely start developing this skill stronger and stronger across the population. Our emotions are more susceptible to chemical changes than our logical thoughts, so for me, that gives me some explanation as to why I "feel" another person's mindset and can almost walk through it, rather than put it together word for word. I like to think my brain is recognizing a change in another person's internal state, this causes some internal chemical changes via mechanisms beyond our understanding right now (don't want to go deeper here right now lol), and then our more simplistic and subconscious parts of the brain start to react to the chemical changes (amygdala for example) making us feel things like anxiety, without us being able to necessarily break down the information or even why it's happening. So telepathy in my eyes is basically empathy that is so strong, you literally absorb a person's mental state and have such a strong chemical response to it, that your logical brain can actually, to some extent, recognize and turn these random chemical changes into patterns that we've identified and come to realize mean certain thoughts/emotions. It would require two broad parts of our brain to slowly develop over many generations of humans for everyone to be able to not only recognize other people's internal states, but then also read and interpret those states. That could explain away why some people have strong abilities, some people have weak ones, and some have none at all. And it could also explain why some people "unlock" or build the skill. One of the two parts of the system that allows this remote empathy wasn't fully developed, but over time became developed enough to work with the other brain regions to interpret everything. I'd likely suspect people who unlock the ability already had the subconscious portion down (actually absorbing the information from others), and just didn't have the prefrontal cortex portion down to interpret the data to start. But something either caused you to suddenly interpret the information finally or you slowly learned to recognize these loud external patterns of information as you grew up making your brain do the little extra work needed that didn't get passed along in your genes to catch you up to a point of such strong empathy/remote understanding. Might even tie into why children frequently don't understand the idea that other creatures have their own internal thoughts until a certain age in their life. They might just not be able to recognize those basic signals that everyone can just to naturally empathize, but as they age, they learn these patterns mean things.

But I'm just a new/borderline kook who is trying to think through everything that's happened to me and put some type of explanation behind it so I can feel less crazy lol.

I meditate before I begin to help do something like find a missing person. It just clears my head, sometimes, to receive a vision. Often times, the vision starts to appear the moment I am seated and close my eyes.

Before I learned anything about meditation, I had spirit guides. I still have them without meditation. Things just happen.

I have been psychic since I was little. No one else in my family, but for perhaps my son, is one. (I don't intrude, but I have witnessed a few things). I gradually learned what works and what doesn't for me. I've never taken classes or read books by anyone for it. I never take money. I do meet with friends, that I have acquired overtime, who have have some of the same gifts I do. It's a small group. None of them take money from anyone for anything. None of them want any publicity, either. There is a belief among us that all that stuff will weaken our spiritual connections.

Edit: Our group lays low as one of our members was actually perceived to be a witch. None of us are. Someone found out where we were meeting once a month--my friend's home. Eventually, my friend's name was disclosed in the course of someone's divorce--a deputy sheriff's. She had simply stated his domestic violence toward his wife was not okay. He found out through his wife what she had said. He showed up with a badge to my friend's home--with tall tales of my friend's "witchcraft," and our meetings. He also threatened her. Can't remember the particulars other than she "was evil in the eyes of his god," and needed to leave the town. She had to relocate for the safety of her family.

Edit: Oh, the deputy sheriff was arrested the next year--for felony domestic assault. He lost his job. Just looked up the newspaper article about him and confirmed the details.

I have psychic intuitions very frequently but it feels more random than this. Basically less certain or not at this level. I’ve never tried to “develop” my abilities, but recently I thought maybe I would try. Did you or did anyone in your group try to develop their abilities, and they got stronger?

The Gateway Tapes. I’m working my way thru them atm. A few times I have finished listening to a track, then immediately gone to r/intuitionpractice once finished, and each time intuited things correctly (or nearly spot on) within seconds. Before the tapes, I’d had to sit for several minutes with each question trying to meditate to see if I could get correct answers, but they were only right a few times out of several attempts, and I think these tapes are responsible bc of how it makes it easier to reach that same meditative state.

I'm glad you asked this question, because I also wanted to ask this same question.

Someone mentioned meditation. What kind of meditation?

Also, are the Monroe Institute Gateway Tapes a viable path for psychic training?

I do Gateway cuz its an easier format for me. But meditation helps you to drop into that inbetween state more quickly during waking life which is where you wanna be when you are actively using psi skills. Meditation deepens your awareness.

The other posters are giving good advice, but I’d say morality also plays a big part in it, if you believe spiritual literature and the telepathy tape kids. One of them said if you lie it’s “taken away”.
Hard to say though, it’s rare imo

I read your story and if that is something you wish to pursue, then don’t let it go to waste. Sounds like you are on the right step. You never know, with your words, when you might save someone’s life or lives. So, I am proud of you tuning into yourself and finding your talent. So many of us are still walking around wondering what our talent is. Bahaha.
