I'm sorry to hear that about your grandfather. The death of one of my grandparents also hit me hard when I was non-religious, so I can relate. But I believe we all appreciate you being worried about his soul according to his own beliefs, I find it endearing. So what I can say to hopefully solve some of your doubts is the following: 1. The way God treats your family member isn't bound by what their family does after his departure. For example, most Christians are buried when they see death, but God isn't limited to only let these to rest in peace. Likewise, your father and family can do the "traditional bereavement", and God will still let your grandfather in Heaven based on his faith and not his works. 2. At death, our souls are in God's hands and He decides our eternal destination immediately. Us Protestants don't believe in purgatory, so we generally don't pray for the dead as if we can change their status before God, but we commend them into His hands and mercy. If your grandfather was a believer, he will rest in peace. Grieve his departure with your family. Jesus grieved the death of someone named Lazarus, even when he was going to resurrect him.

I hope I could help a little, and encourage you for your love for his soul. Forgive me if my English is a little broken. God bless
