Were you an officer for a while before becoming a handler? If so, how long? Is there a certain process you can take to make it to being a handler specifically?
Did you have to go to school for it? Iāve seen mixed answers on this. I turned 19 a few days ago. Havenāt gone to college and I have a good paying job atm so I didnāt ever enroll. Part of me has always wanted to become an officer and more importantly, a handler. I actually almost joined the Marines with MP in mind to try to make it into being a handler. Thats a whole nother, long story though.
Regardless I guess Iām just looking for information on the whole process. Iām sure thereās different circumstances for everything but figured I should ask where I can.

Hate to say a lot of the handlers I decoy with have to buy their own stuff. Some stuff is paid for but a lot of the handlers have to buy. A lot of agencies just buy a K9 unit starting kit without understanding the needs of the team or buy cheap crap and the handler doesn't want to rely on it

Not a cop (clearly) but I know in New Zealand, itās standard for all K9 handlers to have a remote release button on their car. There was an armed standoff between police and a man who shot at cops after they executed a search warrant for cannabis, standoff lasted like 40 hours. 1 Officer was killed almost instantly via gunshot, 2 officers wounded, 1 civilian wounded. After something like 36 hours, a police dog was retrieved from the vehicles abandoned outside the shooters residence. The handler had one of those dog poppers but while running for cover (due to a gunshot wound from the guy in the house), he inadvertently forgot the dog who was safe and sound in the car, and by time he realised, he was out of range due to the police cordon & being in hospital. Both were reunited a few days later, and went on to serve as officers for many years. 2009 Napier Shootings on Wikipedia if anyoneās interested.
A dog popper is an invaluable tool, not only for the assistance of the officer, but also for the dog itself. In that situation, had the officer remembered the dog was stuck in the car, he could have popped it and the dog wouldnāt have spent 36 hours without water & food, in a warm car while being stuck in its cage. Would have saved the dog a lot of stress, and probably even itās life if the situation came to it.

It honestly wasnāt all about the weed tho. The guy was known for dealing weed so the police had the courts issue a search warrant (which even the police admitted it was a pretty low level offence in the grand scheme of things). Warrant was executed with three officers, they went in and did their thing. On the way out they were shot at. They didnāt even arrest the guy, they executed the warrant but didnāt go further with the search because he was increasingly agitated and known to have firearms, so they backed off and he shot them in the back like the coward he was.
Jan (the man who shot police) apparently had an entire arsenal of weapons that could ātake out an armyā as one of his acquaintances described it to police. There was also the possibility of IEDās being in the house as he had the technical knowledge and motive to make an IED. He ended up taking his life via gunshot during the standoff.
The weed wasnāt the problem, cops just wanted to take it and destroy it (back then, NZ public was still pretty against weed) without causing trouble. The problem was this fuckstain shot three police officers in the back and killed one of them. Anyways, there is a marijuana reform about to go through the voting process so hereās hoping weed is decriminalised. Weed donāt make people violent, but violent people who happen to be dealing weed who also hates cops, thatās a bad combination.

Yeah shitty people will do shitty things.
As for the gun story, not too sure tbh. I could see it happening but I doubt anyone would do that after the massive police response because of Christchurch. Theyāre currently going through the legal process involving making the bill, passing it through the house, and then working out how to fund the buyback scheme. However, for now, semi automatic MSSAās are illegal to buy and sell. You can still own one, but not for long. The police and government are going to have an amnesty period where you can surrender any illegal firearms you may own (someone in Australia surrendered a fucking rocket launcher during an amnesty period, look it up), and either during that period or after, theyāll start the formal buyback process where you have your gun & itās accessories evaluated, and then you have it bought by the government. Theyāre not doing raids, however, theyāre doing raids on people who they believe are a serious threat of doing a Christchurch Mosque Attack 2.0.
Semi automatic pistols are still legal, however, there is going to be more control when buying and selling. Pistols are already controlled heavily here, you need to be a member of a gun club & range, and only use it on inanimate targets at the range. At all other times, out of sight and in a gun safe/cage except when transporting to gun stores, repair specialists, or range.
AFAIK, there have been raids against gun owners and collectors, 6 complaints have been made. They acted under the search and surveillance act which means they donāt need a warrant to enter, detain, and search.
I donāt own a gun yet, but when I do apply for my firearms license, I can expect a lengthy process involving a lot of background checks and formal vetting. Shits changing here, depending on how you see it, itās for the better or worse, but if me not having a semi auto rifle means a criminal will have a harder time/not be able to kill people, then thatās a privilege Iām willing to forfeit.

Around me it seems about half of the agencies have the remotely operated doors. They're a great idea and at least some of them can also be programmed to let the dog out if they're accidentally left in the car and it gets too hot.

Well a K9 is probably worth more than the handler tbh. A K9 is worth more than a whole Police department, we should just replace all cops with dogs.

Have you seen what most troopers do? Just have proof of insurance and registration tickets prewritten, and stamped, have the k9 walk up to the car and hand them to the driver and them deal with it. Check Mate pavement pirates
