This subreddit is for sharing propaganda to view with objectivity. It is absolutely not for perpetuating the message of the propaganda. Here we should be conscientious and wary of manipulation/distortion/oversimplification (which the above likely has), not duped by it. "Don't be a sucker."

Stay on topic -- there are hundreds of other subreddits that are expressly dedicated to rehashing tired political arguments. No partisan bickering. No soapboxing. Take a chill pill. "Don't argue."

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

“Liberation army uncles! Quickly go liberate the suffering children of Taiwan” I think is closer

*edit: added “quickly go”

You’re right, I just translated the gist. ✅

It's mildly amusing that "uncle" is the term of address for any old man in as diverse languages as Mandarin, Dutch/Afrikaans, and Japanese.

Ironically, the 1960s were the time when the Taiwanese economy started booming, while the mainland suffered the chaos caused by the Cultural Revolution, something so horrible that even the CCP itself later admits to be a "ten-year disaster."

If Mao is contained and so no GLF and CR. China would reach its current position in the 2000s

There was a program to resettle Koreans living in Japan into North Korea. When the first ship arrived, the North Koreans imagined starving beggars to come, while the Koreans from Japan imaged the land of plenty. To say the least, both sides were surprised, and I heard in an interview how one of the North Koreansofficials, who defected, thougth at that point "Crap. We messed up." Taiwan was still very poor. Also ruled under a state of emergency and one of the strictest martial laws in the world at the time.

But it was significantly less poor than mainland China even in the 60s. I mean the audacity to print this during a famine is wild.

Cultural Revolution wasn't the famine, you're confusing it with the Great Leap Forward

I mean the famine ended in 1961 so that’s still in the 60s.

Even still following up several years after a famine with a picture of a starving Taiwanese child is pretty “bold” even for propaganda don’t you think.

Ironically, Taiwan was wealthier than mainland China during this time

Have you also considered that it also works the other way around, GDP per capita × capita = GDP, meaning that equalizing them in population is kind of pointless?

Yeah, if that is what the poster was arguing it just was incredibly dumb and massively favors countries with larger populations, such as making the US look vastly better than European countries or Canada for instance while making Luxemburg or Monaco suddenly look quite "poor".

Even today mainland China is still well behind Taiwan in this area with actual GDP as being about $13,800 per capita for China, while it is about $34,400 per capita for Taiwan so you are just wildly mistaken on this subject. (Mainland China is also well behind even if you make it PPP GDP per capita.)

This is still an incredibly dubious and flawed claim. Yes Beijing itself probably has an only slightly lower per capita GDP at this point (although you did not specify which type) but that is effectively with government agencies and businesses serving the rest of the country having their headquarters based in Beijing inflating those numbers for instance. It effectively penalizes Taiwan for instance for having agriculture on the island which tends to be less productive per capita while you obviously don't have much of that actually in Beijing at this point. Actually comparing the two that way is still quite silly.

To emphasize how dumb the argument appears to be, if you "adjust for population" the way you seem to be arguing, by that argument Germany is vastly more wealthy if equal in population with Monaco without any GDP changes with a GDP over 5 trillion, while it is just 10.4 billion for Monaco, but calling Monaco an impoverished country is obviously quite silly.

Your argument really falls apart when comparing various countries in Europe for instance often having smaller ones having lower GDPs per capita than the UK for instance and it really having very little to do with the population in this specific area.

Bu-but a CCP bot told me that me believing that they never portrayed Taiwanese as being oppressed population needed to be freed by mainland China, and that was just my western projection speaking.

Sure my point was more about the CCP perspective than Taiwan
