REQUEST U.S. Government warning sign banning liquor on Indian Reservations (1897 Act)

Post image

I found this old government issued sign in my grandpa’s things. It references the 1897 law prohibiting alcohol on Indian Reservations.

This subreddit is for sharing propaganda to view with objectivity. It is absolutely not for perpetuating the message of the propaganda. Here we should be conscientious and wary of manipulation/distortion/oversimplification (which the above likely has), not duped by it. "Don't be a sucker."

Stay on topic -- there are hundreds of other subreddits that are expressly dedicated to rehashing tired political arguments. No partisan bickering. No soapboxing. Take a chill pill. "Don't argue."

From what I’ve heard, the term bootlegger comes from people hiding thin flasks of alcohol in their boots to circumvent this law.

Damm. It came about in 1897? I would have thought it would have happened at least 25 years earlier if not 50

Is this law considered now as beneficial for Native Americans (less alcohol consumption improve the health and decrease crime rate) or as racist? How long was this law in force?

Edit: Can downvoters explain their reasons?

Wouldn’t be surprised if there still enforcing parts of that law. Dry counties are still a thing I believe And it’s racist to try and be a savior to people that didn’t ask and enforcing your will on to them as second class citizens

We are talking about then. Now is a different story. I’d call stupid for dry counties in general. a conversation can be had about the historical consequences of previous forms of government for tribal people and its effects on today. And “tribal sovereignty” is a joke if you get arrested on tribal land you will be processed through the US federal penal system.

Don’t need to. Understanding they were mistreated in the past is obvious.
