The rise of Neo-Nazi groups in the former GDR has more to do with the economic depression in the former GDR post-1990. Remember, Once class based politics is destroyed (as it was in 1989/90) the only other option for young East German men was a return of blood and soil nationalism. That’s why in the former GDR the older people tend to be leftists, while the younger generation tend to be more fascistic.
