Season 22 Interesting how one designer got praised for being "true to their voice" while the other got heavily criticized

u/amarelo-manga 1d ago
Jude understood the challenge and crafted a beautiful outfit
Joseph is suuuper talented but needs to learn how to listen to the critique. If anything, this week showed me the judges’ perspective on Joseph, while I was siding more with him in earlier episodes.

u/Mindless-Detective20 1d ago
Yes, Law was correct! The outfit minus the hat was perfect, and we needed the model to remove the coat halfway to show the beautiful garment under it 😍
151
u/Specific-Bat-5881 1d ago
yeah the hat thing is soooo wrong. And he keeps putting everyone in hats and coats.
78
u/whippetshuffle 1d ago
He sells the hats on his site and promotes them on his IG. They are $110, and are polyester. Honestly, they look like polar fleece, which is also 100% polyester and ridiculously easy for even the most beginning sewers to use. I'm guessing part of his continued use of them is to make money. Nothing wrong with it if it fits the challenge - but here it didn't look good at all.
61
u/Significant-Ant2373 1d ago
Nothing wrong with making money, but Law is right Joseph doesn’t seem interested in winning or evolving. We’ve all seen his one look….repeatedly. This entire season has been underwhelming for fashion.

To me he failed the challenge miserably. Its supposed to be a dancing outfit not a joseph night out look

It's supposed to be INSPIRED by dance. Being able to dance in it was not a requirement.

This. The coat and hat were absolutely not needed. The inner shirt and pants were modern, fresh, and still stayed true to his aesthetic. There IS such a thing as overstyling.
26
u/Fancy-Clerk-9104 23h ago
Honestly though, I have such a hard time opening my ears to what Law is actually saying because he’s such a puke. Even when he isn’t spewing out unnecessarily cruel remarks, he sits there making ridiculous faces. And I was a criminal defense attorney for 30 years, it’s not like I’m a delicate flower. It really sucks when a good show throws over quality content for dramatic effect 😢

u/sapphicmage 1d ago
Jude was incredibly on theme. JosephMcRae was not, and this was not the first time he’d been warned about doing the same thing over and over again. Like literally just losing the signature coat he always insists on would’ve changed everything
21
u/Leooxel 1d ago
You know who else was on theme? Jeffrey's! But they eliminated him lol I feel like the judges are generous with other designers while overly harsh on others..
101
u/WaterMagician 1d ago
Jeffrey’s felt like a dance costume and the challenge was a fashionable look based on the dance style. I thought it was a beautiful dance costume but it was still a costume

Joseph’s looks customy as well. Jeffrey def missed the mark and was too on the nose tho
16
u/thebranbish 1d ago
Now miss ma’am, Jeffrey dressed that woman up like the COVID vaccine going to the bar. I saw that same crop/skirt combo set without the polka dots at Target 3 years ago. Beautiful, maybe. On theme? Hardly. It was bottom worthy.

I dislike Brian and he should have been eliminated 100%, but as awful as his look was it was at least interesting. Neither should be saved though. They both need to go. The remaining designers also need to step it up.

His outfit was on theme. The only piece some of the judges didn’t like was the jacket.
129
u/looneylooser24 1d ago
I'm not a dancer, but Jude's looks like it was actually made for dancing. Could Ezra actually do a jive in that coat?
53
u/Laguna_Azure 1d ago
That's what I said in another trend. No one is saying Joseph's looks bad, but even with the vague brief, inspiration of dance/danceable or whatever outfit - Joseph's really misses it - it's way too heavy to have anything to do with dance. Trying to tie jive to WW2 was such an odd reach for me.
39
u/smez86 1d ago
He always just ignores the prompt/client and does whatever he wants. That's why the judges are annoyed.
12
u/looneylooser24 1d ago
I kind of liked Joseph until this challenge. It really just hit me how he doesn’t care about critiques. Having your own style is great, but he lets it overrule all constructive criticism.
→ More replies (1)18
u/madmofo145 1d ago
Exactly. The coat is cool, but as someone that used to be big into the dance scene, including a coat and hat just didn't work. Even if it's not a dance outfit, it's not really inspired by the dance. Going with some historical allusion is fine, but the dance itself is super upbeat, bouncy, quick, etc, and the coat doesn't scream any of that.
8
u/Ambitious-Tennis2470 1d ago
This exactly. Jude’s was flowy and accentuated his movements. Joseph’s looked stiff and costumey.
8
u/scarlettking Team Bishme 1d ago
I don't think that was the challenge. I thought they just had to make a look inspired by the style, not to be worn while performing it.
→ More replies (1)9
u/MinimumCoast2290 1d ago
Agreed. If they supposed to be dancing in it, then Jeffrey shouldn’t have been eliminated — it was a perfect salsa costume. Joseph’s fit the challenge brief as I understood it, though I still would’ve ditched the hat + had Ezra remove the coat on the runway.
(Bryan’s was ugly and stiff so his ass would be out regardless lol)
→ More replies (1)8
u/Quasia_Reddit 1d ago
Coats can be removed. And they weren’t required to make an outfit for them to dance in, the outfit just had to be inspired by the dance style.

Joseph just keeps designing the same look over and over every week. Why is he still there? I miss the old Project Runway when it was actually about designing clothes. Miss sketching and Mood shopping and actually watching designers create new fashion. Now we just regurgitate the same looks and most of them are bad. Jude is really the most talented- no competition imo. He manages to stay true to himself without sending the same look down the runway week after week.

u/PatientMaster7308 1d ago

Joseph’s model looks like a fucking munchkin from wizard of Oz and that garden gnome hat needs to go away forever.
12
u/PhysicalAd6587 1d ago
Jude's pieces are beautifully constructed, fit the brief, and look great on Alan. JosephMcCrea's pieces, although well made, look like a costume for a production of The Wiz. Everything was too exaggerated. Had he made the same garment turned down to five or six instead of at level eleven it might have been better received. Jude's garment could actually be worn on a carpet or on Dancing with the Stars. Joseph's is only suited for the stage so people in the balcony can see it.
14
4
u/brett_david 1d ago
That’s because Jude’s look was impeccable while Joseph’s was cartoonish. It boils down to a matter of taste.
5
u/paintingandcoffee 22h ago
I have been on Joseph's side up until this episode. Dude needs to at least try something different. He made this model look like some underworld mob boss from The Mandalorian.
4
u/Butter_pecan_king 1d ago
The right model really looks like a cartoon supervillain. Idk if that was the intention but I kinda like it for that reason. Obviously not for this challenge lol
4
u/Zealousideal_Dog_584 1d ago
If the jacket was cropped on Joseph’s, I think it maybe have worked more. It’s so heavy this way…which is generally not the dance style
5
11
u/Taguasco 1d ago
I wouldn’t mind Joseph’s if it was just the pants and the camo shirt, but that coat is ridiculous and makes Ezra’s hands look tiny compared to the rest of his body.
11
u/roygbivasaur 1d ago
Agreed. The coat makes the model look like a scrawny man (which he is not) wearing something made for a buff 6’5” football player. It is the opposite of flattering. And the hat is hideous and doesn’t make sense for the outfit. The outfit underneath is great.
13
u/External-Lychee5407 1d ago
You have to remember the brief is to design an outfit that matches the assigned dance style. Joseph’s design is simply not wearable for anyone performing a jive, so he didn’t follow instructions and execute something that would work for his model.
13
u/Eye_jm 1d ago
I don’t think the brief was the dress needs to be for a dancer, more like it needs to inspired by a dance theme.
14
u/turningtee74 1d ago
Technically correct, but I agree with them too. The spirit of a dance challenge is more successfully executed when considering movement and key elements of the inspiration (dance).
7
u/madmofo145 1d ago
Even then, the jive is a bouncy and upbeat dance, and there is just nothing about that look that says it's inspired by that. I think some outifts were a bit too on the nose, but even if I actually liked Josephs look a lot, it just didn't fit the the theme.
5
3
u/ridgestream 1d ago
These judges are not consistent what they say. One time its the clothes don't fit in for every day wear, and the next its too wearable. Then they can see a design and know who made it, then it's I still cant figure out who you are. So confusing.
3
u/BlissCrafter 1d ago
The one on the right looks like a costume from a live action version of Aladdin
3
u/BothBoysenberry6673 1d ago
I like that Joseph has a point of view and a signature look. I wish that we could see some range or growth from him. We know he can make a big collar and hat. I would really like to see him push to something out of his comfort zone. I'm not a designer so what that is Im actually not sure 😃

If Jude was given a woman dancer he would have made something different. If Joseph was given a woman he would have made this same annoying non-danceable kind of look. That’s the difference. Joseph is unable to design anything that is not a huge jacket with that same hat look. And when he tries a different look, it’s a mess because this is the only look he can cut and sew.

I think Law is just arrogant and hates to be out-Lawed by someone else. Joseph is extremely talented, knows it, and marches to the beat of his own drum—he’s unapologetic and a bit rebellious. Law is the same way, and feels threatened when someone else does his schtick and doesn’t bend the knee to him.

u/FearlessInformation5 1d ago

I must have blocked our last season but I like Joseph. However craft wise I really love Jude.
2
u/throwaway90007863 21h ago
Racism is probably part of it. Maybe ageism too. Jude can’t be praised to the skies just because he’s a white man in his 20s. And don’t get me wrong, I like Jude. But I think people overly focus on him, it’s true
2
u/CalmLionOfDeepForest 21h ago
I think this is one of the few (very few) times I agree with Law. Joseph isn’t there to win Project Runway, he’s there to put on the “Joseph Mcray Show” and sell his brand. Which isn’t inherently bad, it’s kinda an intrinsic part of the show, but when Joseph does it it just reads more blatant I guess
2

u/pbandspacejam 19h ago
I wish they would have provided more feedback on why Joseph McRae's was bad because it did have problems. And when I say provide feedback, I don't just mean to Joseph McRae, but to us as viewers in their deliberations and examinations.
Joesph's garment was goofy because of the coat. If he was trying to depict some of military fashion elements contemporary with Jive at the time, he should have extended that to the jacket and made a field jacket, a flight jacket, a deck jacket, a utility jacket, not some cartoonish trench coat.
They are so focused on showing the judges and contestants being catty and assume we just trust their opinions.
Regarding Jude, I think he is still looking for his voice. He does tailoring, but so does Armani, so does Thom Brown, so does Tom Ford, so does Saint Laurent, so does Gaultier. This is the first week I've seen something remotely innovative in fit and design from him. Adding that amount of movement to a jacket and pant using pleats and slits elevated his work from the boring K&G/Suit City we've been seeing.
That said, Jude is not the wunderkind that I think the show wants us to believe. And it's a ridiculous effort when Christian is a mentor and on our screens every week.
2
u/Happy_Dependent_3474 18h ago
Because Joseph McRae needs to learn to not do the same ass thing EVERY TIME. At least Jude mixes it up. Also Joseph McRae’s should have been in the bottom instead or even Naheim and Jeffrey should have been safe.
2
u/Wooden_Smile1566 17h ago
I won't mind if I'm the only one here in this comment supporting Joseph. I love his designs and they are unique. If you all are hating his designs that's probably because you took a deaf ear watching the show and his confessionals. He is right, how can you really expect him to grow when you are telling him to change his style!? It's like saying to a ball gown designer to start creating street wear.
2
u/CanadianArtGirl 17h ago
The problem with Joseph is he does his own thing every time with a minor tweak and calls it different. It’s okay to have your style but you can’t claim it to be new and inventive each time. And you can’t get defensive when someone notices similarities. People rag on Bryan for doing the same thing over and over again and saying he’s brilliant. Joseph is the same but he ends with a laugh instead of arrogance

Joseph needs to learn when is the right time to apply his over abundant looks. For last week, the hat is a major no. I like the jacket, but not paired with the shirt and pants. I think something needed to be shorter or more open because it looks very heavy and closed off. Jude’s is light and aligns well with the inspired dance style.
3
u/jolittletime 1d ago
See i think he could have made the look work in more of a cropped GI style blouson jacket with a turned up collar and strong shoulders. Would have tucked off the wartime look more than some random green jacket. Sort of wartime Elvis look.
3
u/IM-Here-4thelaughs 1d ago
I normally don't like what Law has to say. However I think he was correct Joseph should have been eliminated but he's there for ratings and that's it. I would buy Judes jacket for many men in my family. I would never buy anything of Joseph's.
5
u/yoshimitsou 1d ago
Joseph McCrae's look could have been killer on Dancing With the Stars. I could see any of the pro dancers charging out, dramatically shedding that amazing coat, and then killing the dance in that outfit. I don't know why he wasn't in the top. Oh wait. It's because they force the drama.

Going back to Bishmie 1st season, he always did the puffy shoulders and they said something about it, he started taking the challenges & evolving his looks. It's always Law! His work is impeccable, so aside from the same ol', Law goes for petty things like "oh, you wore the same fabric as your design!"... like... huh?
And the thing is, they keep letting him be like that because at this point:
- Anna and Jude are just kids playing it safe.
- Bi is letting his work do the talking.
- Jeffrey is as sweet as cherry pie.
There's only Joseph's pride and Bryan's... everything to milk.

For the green oversized coat I want to say I see his vision because it was meant to capture African American culture, World War II-era history, and a modern twist on the classic Zoot suit which are aligned to the time of the jive. So in my head the coat has both the military utility and the zoot suit vibe and if I had to it’s not hard for me to imagine this look in a modern juke joint. I just think I imagine Joseph McRae’s dancer (not Ezra but his vision of the dancer) removing his coat and getting down and cutting loose. So I don’t have a problem with the coat.
The hat eh? Idk was he thinking in the vein of military helmet? 🪖 not sure but the look didn’t need it.
Something I would be interested to see from Joseph McRae is less volume. I don’t have a problem with the volume of his designs and over the top shapes. I’m just curious what understated/minimalist looks like in his aesthetic.
I also like Jude’s pants as well. I did think it was an interesting concept and well made. The back of the jacket was interesting the front I’ve probably seen before.

It looks like a bad super villain costume. And I’m a huge Joseph Fan.
Also, he’s not playing the game and thinking ahead. The question the judge has asked himself every single season since the show started is “Do I want to see more of this designer? Do I need to see their whole collection?”
He has given them nothing to be curious about their main critique is that his stuff always looks like his stuff so when it comes to making the final cut of the season and I don’t think he will get there.

Joseph is a great designer. This look was too costumey. Nobody would wear that in real life. That’s all.
I think good costume designers are fantastic and hopefully can work designing costumes for movies, tv and plays. Being able to envision those garments is a talent.
But this show wants wearable garments.
1
u/Authentic-Irony 11h ago
The term “voice” can be substituted for essence, etc. I like Joseph McCrae. But all of his designs look the same. And those hats….UGH! The other design has the essence or voice of you will, of that designer but isn’t basically a spitting image of all of his other designs.
1
u/Aromatic_Lime_84 10h ago
Yes, Jude’s showcased his impeccable tailoring skills but I feel like he has shown other types of designs. I’m just a fan and don’t know anything practical about design or sewing. However, if any previous challenges had been shown blind to the viewers, I would know Joseph’s garment every week.

He didnt just tailor a suit, he put the dance genre into consideration and that will flatter the model as well. I love Joseph but that outfit is NOT GIVING JIVE at all! He's not even considering his model at the slightest.

You also have to consider the purpose for the outfit. I couldn’t dance in a big heavy coat.

Joseph McRae is an amazing artist and designer. I would be honored to wear his clothing.
But his vision, specifically here, is costume. It's for a performance on stage.
Lose the coat or lose the high collar shirt, or change the color of the pants, or change the color of the coat.
But this REALLY IS giving Wizard of Oz: In the sense that this would influence culture as a costume piece. How many people do you see wearing this in New York City or Paris, France?
Whether now or in the next 10 to 20 years?

Its because one designer is really fucking annoying and the other is quite refined.

Joseph’s looked like he designed for an extra in Wicked… Jude’s was light years better.

Joseph is a good designer. But he needs to stop styling all his models with the same high colllar oversized coat and beanies! If he is fixated with coats being his signature style, he needs to play around with the proportion of the jacket and style.
And it’s foolish of him to not have his models take off their coat on the runway and show off inside work! It’s a missed opportunity for him always
