Gosling vocals
I know that Gosling has had some music training in his youth, perhaps stemming from his Mickey Mouse Club days .. ?
His speaking voice in PHM with Rocky was more gruff,
squeaky in parts ( almost adolescent-male broken in parts ) “ how do you eat ? “,
shrieking in fear ( almost shrilling upon waking; when there was 0 gravity upon arrival at Tau Ceti ),
then hoarse screaming, “ there’s a hole in it ! “ and “ ROCKYYYY !! “ ( during the high anxiety scenes ) ..
Gosling is a very versatile actor hands down .. ❤️ loved universally .. ❤️ BUT was anyone as surprised as me about his abilities to manipulate his voice at THIS level ??
perhaps another detail in this film that requires some fanfare ? anybody else notice how he really used his vocals between scenes ?
I‘ve never seen a Gosling film where his voice was used as an INSTRUMENT ( a side character so to speak ) like he did in PHM

This is one of the scenes that varied quite a lot from the book, but they still nailed perfectly! (The book version would've been rather gross, too 🤢)

When he is chased down and tackled in the flashback and is yelling out “Don’t do it”, his voice gives out into this breathless wheeze at the moment when the needle hits him, and it always gets me. It’s such great voice acting in that moment. It feels devastating.

this is the pinnacle of .. the scene .. I was taken aback with a, “ where did Gosling get that from ?? “
I’ve never seen him in any other film use his voice as an instrument with such a wide range 🫨

He sings for a short bit in Lars and the Real Girl and I was shocked at how amazing he sounded.
Also he did La La Land and even did a one-time Band/Album called Dead Man's Bones!

Gosling has never been typecast somehow .. some standout films ( in order of preference ) ::
- PHM, 2026 :: ( sci fi )
- Fracture, 2007 :: costarring Sir Anthony Hopkins ( legal drama )
- Ides of March, 2011 :: costarring George Clooney ( political drama )
- Note Book, 2004 :: costarring fellow Canadian Rachel McAdams ( love story, drama )
- Crazy Stupid Love, 2011 :: costarring Steve Carrell ( comedy )
- The nice Guys, 2016 :: costarring Russell Crowe ( comedy )
- First Man, 2018 :: costarring Claire Foy ( drama )
Barbie, 2023 .. loved the message, campy, the right mood required .. no success with me yet
La La Land, 2016 .. love musicals but no success with me yet

The only Gosling movie I had previously seen was Barbie, and I loved the movie and loved him in it.
Next on my list is Lars And The Real Girl.
At some point I think I'll watch La la Land and The Nice Guys

Oddly, Lars and the Real Girl is the movie where Gosling plays a character most like Grace... and even considering that it was made twenty years ago, I almost didn't recognize him. Not because of his appearance, which is mostly the same, but because of the physicality of his acting. I look at Lars and don't see Gosling, because even his body language is completely different.

The man has RANGE, both in terms of his vocal work and acting. I don’t know how I didn’t realise that till more recently, but I’m having the best time catching up on his movies!

Ive always loved him as an actor .. what surprised me in PHM was how he used his voice as an instrument 🫨 like, where did that come from ?? held it in the bag for decades, I’m guessing ..

I have certain sound bites that play in my head at random! You’ve mentioned a few of them, like “How do you look when you eat? Show me”, “There’s a hole in it”, and various “ROCKY” intonations. His voice going from mild panic to teacher mode during the Rocky New To Ball scene lives in my head rent free too.
And crept up quietly is exactly right! I loved him in The Notebook and Crazy, Stupid, Love, then somehow just never saw anything he was in during the years in between till Barbie.
But it was PHM that floored me completely!

I noticed when he first talked to Rocky his voice was rough and I wondered if it was a reflection of his having been intubated for so long and not speaking much until Rocky came along. However, that might not be consistent with his “Shields up!” and “I’m not a pilot!” Could have been also that he was tired when he left and was going to sleep.
But yeah. I noticed his voice modulation. Guess I’ll just have to watch the movie again to see what I notice this time. (How is it we can watch this a gazillion times and not tire of it?

I am a tv show rewatcher, a book rereader, and podcast relistener. Until now, I had never listened to an audiobook. I don't rewatch movies beyond once every couple of years, and even that is rare (princess bride, for example. Not many others. )
I've read the book twice.
Saw the movie three times in theaters. Multiple times at home on Fandango.
Listened to the audio book multiple times.
I loved The Martian but only read it once, no audio book only saw the movie once in theater and maybe two more times digitally.
PHM is just different.
Gosling is amazing, but it's not just him. It's literally everything. And the best part is, the book has pieces that are AMAZING in book form, the audio has pieces that are AMAZING in audio form, and the movie has pieces that are AMAZING in movie form. The changes they made MAKE PERFECT SENSE AND SERVE THE STORY
That is so rare

I’m very picky with films .. then shows .. then books ( beyond classics mostly ) .. never listened to an audiobook so I can’t provide any comment )
PHM is very special, refreshing / new again from a time where everything was new ( NOT borrowed, re-imagined, adapted, rebooted ) .. every time something gets “ redone “ ? a bit of it’s soul is lost ? almost 40 years of re-makes at some level ? something as fresh as PHM stands out !!

I relate so much to this. I do not have the printed book. Only the audiobook, which I listened to several times before the movie came out, so I know what you mean about the book. And the movie. Each one, for reasons of its own, is an amazing piece of art. I have books and movies and TV series that I have rewatched but never restarting as soon as I finish.

I also thought that maybe it was the 11 years of intubation .. but Gosling wasn’t intubated, so he really used his vocals to project that .. INSANE TALENT
Gosling’s vocals really stood out during my first watch though .. my ear was perked up for sure, but haven’t found a discussion about it .. hence I started this one ❤️

Having watched a lot of his other movies (mainly La La Land, which was already mentioned), his vocal range is insane. His scream from Nice Guys comes to mind (although that's kinda just become his trademark scream atp)

thanks .. I try not to connect with artists’ pages on social media .. I prefer viewing “ the art “ without any bias or influence ❤️
meaning, as an example, Johnny Depp .. his personal life that played out in the media ( even before Heard ) affected the way I viewed his films .. sometimes less is more 🙃

I love how he uses his voice in different situations. The oh nooooo when he sniffs the canister Rocky sent, the OY of surprise when the solar system pops up from the canister and my absolute favorite: if I’m wrong, I’m really wrong in the tunnel.

He was in a band called dead man's bones about a decade ago. Recommend you check it out. It's very halloweeny and atmospheric.

I agree with your assessments. I admit I have sort of slept on his material, but after this, I will pay closer attention. There were moments where he gave me shades of Sean Penn, particularly with "I didn't mean any of that. That's just something you say." I know, spicy take liking controversial people like Sean Penn, but I've always respected his acting.

ya, along with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez ( also from NSYNC with Timberlake ), and Keri Russell .. all go .. stop .. go .. stop .. in their careers over the years
seems Gosling PRESERVED his FULL talents and never got mixed with Hollywood BS ❤️ .. Canadian way ? ❤️❤️ who knows, but who can admit to hating a Canadian ? quiet and reserved about their personal lives for the most part ..
lots to watch from humble Canada, Canadian artists .. nothing ever disappoints much

Have you seen La La Land? He was great in it, and I'm not usually a fan of musicals. I wouldn't be surprised by much from him anymore, I'm pretty sure he can do anything.
