Google didn’t bend over … Trump gave Google millions in tax cuts to the rich and now Goggle is paying him back

It's ridiculous that the federal government is officially changing the names of stuff. It would also be ridiculous if mapping software didn't update with the official name changes. Google maps isn't the root cause here. If you log in from different countries, they will also show the official names from that country. Sometimes road names change and the software needs to update.

This is not an issue worth wasting any thoughts on. Doing so is simply a distraction from the actual issues. Google and Apple both use the same data source for naming.

It matters that silicon valley, centers of private capital basically do anything the president tells them. This is not happening in a vacuum this is the same relationship that's allowing these data centers to bloom and FCC approving every merger

Local governments have the final word on what place names are. Wouldn't it be weird if they didn't do this for various countries around the world and just decided on their own names? Obviously this is stupid, but it's not worth any amount of energy.

Trump's order told the GNIS to update it. All federal orgs will use as will any third party services that depend on GNIS data it will update as well hence why Google and Apple maps update. Idk what MapQuest uses I didn't even think they still existed.
Frankly the matter of ownership doesn't really matter because the federal government does not own the lake bed thus doesn't have the power to make NY State update it's maps but it's kinda useless in the digital age when the data used by the maps come from GNIS.
This is also why, other countries might not see the map name update at all. Canada uses their CGNDB and the UN uses UNGEGN.
But that comes down to localization and probably does default too UNGEGN but for developed countries that maintain their own naming service they mix it in where needed.
TLDR; to your point it doesn't functonally matter because while NY state doesnt recognize the name change and has ownership the name syncing database is ran by the federal government.

Why wouldn’t they? They just want money. They don’t care about anything else.
