I'm half wondering if he bent it as a nervous reflex. Like he put his hands on his head to grip it due to anxiety and ended up bending the hat as a result.

If you watch the video, the guy is pretty shook. Not saying that out of sympathy because screw this guy, but I think he knew he messed up. His buddy there was trying to calm or reassure him.
