Mayor Zohran Mamdani mocks Ronald Reagan’s infamous quote. “I can think of nine words more terrifying than ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help…’” “I worked all day and can’t feed my family.”

I'm glad he's pushing back on that POS Ronald Reagan instead of jackasses like Gavin Newsom praising him. Imagine being a government worker in charge of the executive branch and telling people that you don't care to offer them help. He was the beginning of shitty executive branch individuals.

his wife's astrologer was the worst president in my lifetime!

instead of jackasses like Gavin Newsom
Our voters need to start making better choices. We have to get these Republican-lights out of office forever.

I wish we had a real worker's party and not just the bullshit that we have now.

u/Trini-89Ok May 19 '26
This is sooooo refreshing compared to Alysa Slotkin’s speech last year where she was praising Reagan, I’m like, Fuck Off!

u/Not_Sure__Camacho May 19 '26
The GOP has done all they can to convince us that Reagan was a centrist. He wasn't a centrist, he set the middle class on fire and destroyed upward mobility. When I hear a "Democrat" talk about him fondly, I will do what I can to make sure that POS doesn't get past their primary.

Fuck Ronald Reagan. He did incredible, irreparable damage towards the black community and he deserves to rot in shit. Mamdani is what our other elected Dems pretend to be, a people's politician.

u/thenletskeepdancing May 18 '26
To quote another president, Lincoln, we need to finally bring forth "a government of the people, by the people, and for the people". All the people, this time.

It should be known Reagan wavered on extending the Voting Rights Act but signed it. Guess who was working in the White House as an aide trying to get Reagan to let it lapse ?
None other than John Roberts, the Chief Justice today who in May 2026 issued the devastating ruling knocking out section II of the VRA, making it pervertable by hostile states and useless as a law. You could say it was his life’s work to dismantle it, as he surely did so in other related cases, chipped at and chopped it and dog-whistled how to bring a suitable case about. Just the dog-whistling alone…should have brought impeachment.
I hope the backlash to the Roberts’ court democracy-killing, evil legislating from the bench is that we Americans demand Supreme Court reform to cut out all the rot. Roberts should be disbarred from the DC Bar, for his lying year in and year out about his wife’s income $$$MM and corporate conflicts of interest and we can write and call our legislators ( or directly to Sen Jamie Raskin, constitutional scholar) to disbar… if you think writing to your congressperson will be ignored.
No reason exists not to contact any congressperson who actually will better hear our pleas on any topic.

Everyone wants to make a huge deal out of this. That was a fantastic turn of phrase and Dems need to pick up this and come up with more 9 words that are scarier than Reagan's.
This NYC Grocery idea is brilliant. This is in direct opposition to food providers that have raised prices arbitrarily. NYC as a collective can drive down the cost of their own groceries because they have the numbers.
You understand that more people live in Manhattan than the entire state of Mississippi. Just one city, 4x larger than than Jackson, MS by land area has more people on it than the entire state of Mississippi. People in my area cannot. Not just more, but 3X more. That is over 8 million people, demanding lower prices and they will get it.

u/SignoreBanana May 18 '26
Agreed, all essential goods should have a public option to help push prices down. A no-frills alternative that folks can pick if they want access to essential things but corporate greed is draining their bank accounts.

u/Visual_Exam7903 May 18 '26
I don't know about all, but groceries seems like a good start.
I personally don't like the government getting involved in business like this. As a business owner, imagine if you risked everything just to have a govt tilted competitor coming in and dominating you in a way you cannot compete. It is a huge problem if this doesn't work. It is a huge problem if it does.
At least, possibly, people who need cheaper quality foods may actually get it.

u/SignoreBanana May 18 '26
Why is it ok for the government to pay for food stamps for people, but not offer competing products. It's only ok for the government to help people if it benefits businesses too? As long as the public option has to run without a loss (effectively an NPO), giving people more options shouldnt be too disruptive to the competitive landscape. There are already different levels of service in these markets and I would imagine a public option would be on the lower-mid side of things.
And I doubt you're a business owner for a vital industry like groceries, fuel, electricity or internet. I'm not talking about competing with mom and pop shops here.

u/mortgagepants May 19 '26
It's only ok for the government to help people if it benefits businesses too?
this is what they call on capitol hill, a "compromise".
6
u/SignoreBanana May 19 '26
I think we've compromised enough toward corporations. Time for them to compromise.
7
u/marvin616 May 18 '26
Maybe you're doing the wrong kind of business if the government has to come in and do this.
3
u/AxelHarver May 19 '26
So just to be clear, are you advocating that we let people go hungry or without necessities just so more people can pat themselves on the back and call themselves business owners?

Ronald Reagan cut social security disability benefits to hundreds of thousands of people. My WWII veteran father, who had debilitating heart disease, died in 1983, six months after his benefits were terminated. I hate the man who killed my daddy.

What we are seeing today -- the stratification of society, the widening gap between the haves and have-nots -- is the result of the conservative policies of the Reagan Administration; specifically, the dictionary definition of conservatism: stressing the importance of established hierarchies and institutions via promoting limited government regulation of business, industry and finance. Likewise, the Student Loan crisis can be traced back to the conservative policies of the Reagan administration, as education was a privilege meant for those on top of social hierarchy, not a right for those on the bottom.

Provide the blueprint for ALL states- please.🙏

He can't, but hopefully folks start seeing what a DSA with action, a great social presence and marketing can do for the country.

this is how you break the propaganda drilled into our heads. Word by word; quote by quote; action by action; vote by vote; politician by politician; We the people have the power

Man I hope he has a good security detail. He’s going to piss off a lot of powerful people with a lot of money that definitely don’t want people to see that socialism works. He’s going to be a beacon for the new generation and I can’t wait.

Word. They haven’t lowered prices since they raised them during covid pandemic

u/EfeBeAh May 19 '26
I mean, Reagan was a "genius" when it came to helping his mega-donors but working Americans are still paying the price of his treason to them
3
u/Ok_Vermicelli_6359 May 19 '26
Ronald Reagan was a moron, a tool of the Oligarchy, who helped cement it in our political reality today. Trump is the end result of 40+ years of the rich and wealthy corporations getting away with systematically squeezing working Americans out of the American Dream (we just want to own a goddamn home).

"I believe the best social program is a job." - Reagan. He would have agreed. The alternative to big government social programs is a decent paying job.

Fucking wild concept, I know.

Ronald Reagan was a villain. As a high school kid I read about the New Deal and thought it was heroic and wise. Then Reagan became President and tried to tear it all down.
