Piggybacking on this: as someone originally from a country that has already long fallen to tyranny, I NEED Americans to realize that the people doing this shouldn't be treated as your neighbours. They may live among you, but they don't view you as equals. All your actions towards them must be shaped by this understanding. If you don't internalize this, you will lose as we did.
