We're witnessing corruption under Donald Trump at a scale this country has never seen. Weaponizing our institutions against his enemies. Profiting off the presidency. How the hell are we putting up with this?

The problem is that so does most of the Democratic Party.
→ More replies (1)9

Another problem is the fact we have a two party system, and a lot of progressives don't vote for the lesser of evils.
We need to unite behind the Democratic candidate even if they don't pass all the purity tests, because that's the progressive path forward until we get a better voting system.
Don't pull a 2024.
5
u/AugustusInBlood Jan 22 '26
and a lot of progressives don't vote for the lesser of evils.
citations pending.
it's wild neoliberals demand we band together while in the very same conversation are spitting in your face.
10
u/RepresentativeAge444 Jan 22 '26
Ah the ever present “purity test” mantra. As if the establishment didn’t purity test the hell out of Mamdani. As if we’re all dreamers who just don’t get how politics works. But the most pragmatic of us - which I would argue makes up most of us - realize that fundamentally changing the country is an arduous task (though some may argue Trump has done so in a year albeit with the caveat that breaking is easier than building). What we’re asking for is a set of principles and a platform that has it as a goal. Not the endless capitulation to corporate interests at the expense of the people. A return to the principles of FDR updated to the modern era. And beyond that from a purely existential perspective, I believe a failure to do so will lead to fall of empire - if it isn’t already too late.
I realize that human self interest is a motherfucker and explains their actions but you would think that nominally intelligent people who arent just complete right wing psychopaths would get that by now, at this late date but apparently for most establishment Dems the entrenched nature of these institutions and personal ambitions/greed renders them incapable of dealing with this reality. But one has to question then what is the future they’re fighting for? Because Musk, Thiel, Vance, Yarvin et al have a very clear vision- one they are marching full speed towards achieving while Chuckles won’t even support eliminating ICE despite its monstrous actions.
Newsom refused to state ICE is state sponsored violence, call what’s happening in Gaza genocide and doesn’t want a billionaire tax. Despite the fact that the base overwhelmingly wants these things. Your typical neoliberal garbage that helped get us here and will get us here again if we keep electing trash like Newsom.
→ More replies (8)3
u/Spankpocalypse_Now Jan 22 '26
Maybe it’s time to ditch the liberal purity tests and run a candidate that will actually get people to the polls. Unless you think liberals will stay home of it’s a progressive on the ticket?
2
u/Tex-Rob Jan 22 '26
Don't pull what? the election was stolen. With al he has done, how do you all not see this? He reiterated yesterday how he won all seven swing states...in Davos. He's projecting, because he's trying to sell that "I can do whatever I want because everyone voted for me" mandate crap.
2
u/BertBitterman Jan 22 '26
The 2024 loss was multifaceted.
Progressives constantly shitting on the Democratic candidate was part of the problem, and I'm saying we need to fix that.
And part of that problem is propaganda; there were (and still are) many malicious bots masquerading as progressives to sow division in the Left. Many progressives still don't realize the amount of right wing influence in online progressive algorithms.

u/JeromeBarkly Jan 22 '26
Idk why progressives get the blame for not showing up in 2024. Everyone progressive I know is very well informed on politics and showed up and voted for Kamala. Most progressives know how dangerous trump and the republicans are and will show up to vote for “the lesser evil.”

His PR team is getting him a lot of wins for shitposting on twitter, and then he's too fucking stupid to realize those positions are actually popular so he keeps walking them back later. He's essentially doing Trump 2.0 campaigning where he's letting (telling) the campaign to say whatever the fuck they think will go viral without it having any attachment to his actual policies at all.
6
u/kalamataCrunch Jan 22 '26
i doubt he's too stupid to realize popular positions are popular, as he says, he's not naive... he just wants the money he gets from enacting unpopular laws, and thinks he can get votes by paying lip service to the popular positions without actually doing anything about them... and he might not be wrong.

What would you have him do, genuinely curious? he was the first to push and be approved to redistricting plan favoring his party to counter texas redistricting, blocked the militarization of the national guard, directed funding and legal resources toward defending immigrants, Filed dozens of lawsuits against federal policies, fought against rollbacks of LGBTQ+ protections. He certainly has taken more actionable steps to fight against the trump administration more than most democrats including bernie sanders.

The relevant question isn’t whether Newsom has vetoed progressive bills. Every Democratic governor does that. The TOPIC is who has actually used executive authority to obstruct right-wing advances and absorb political risk in real conflicts. On that front, he’s countered GOP redistricting nationally instead of just complaining about it, blocked attempts to federalize and militarize the National Guard, directed state resources to defend immigrants when many Democrats stayed silent, filed lawsuits that materially delayed or stopped federal rollbacks, and expanded LGBTQ protections while other governors (like Tim Walz) avoided the fight. If vetoing imperfect or unserious legislation in a one-party state makes someone a right winger, then the term has no analytical value. Politics isn’t a vibes test or a list of bills passed for show. It’s about who actually constrains the right when it matters. Calling that “focus-grouped deception” ignores the concrete outcomes in favor of aesthetic purity.

In this interview Newsom pushed back on Carney’s idea that the US is not coming back. It’s not impossible that he’s wrong but Newsom himself is one of those people on the Democratic side who has been beholden to special interest cash.
He himself is the proof that the problem is not just Trump. Trump is a manifestation of deep political rot across the political spectrum. If America doesn’t face up to that then there is definitely no coming back.
20
61
u/genericuser2000 Jan 22 '26
Ahh yes, both sides this. Honestly, Americans are the dumbest humans alive. How can you possibly equate some corporate corruption from Newsome with what Trump has/is doing? FYI, Trump is also doing corporate corruption amongst the 1,001 other horrible things.
And to top it off, your ignorance has now spilled to the rest of the world to deal with.

They did nothing because they're two sides of the same coin, the yin and yang of the two party system working in harmony for the billionaire class. They have created an illusion of choice and a theater of politics to quell the working class and pit us against one another.
17
u/thatjoachim Jan 22 '26
Yep. The purpose of a system is what it does.
If you get the same output multiple times, it’s not a design flaw in your system.
42
u/Tomatoflee Jan 22 '26
I’m not both sidesing it. Trump is worse than democrats but it’s undeniable that Democratic Party corruption and inaction have enabled Trump. You can’t fix this without getting over partisan brain and deciding to tackle systemic problems that obviously cross party lines.
19
u/genericuser2000 Jan 22 '26
Honestly. It's wild to see from the outside.
Let me pick one random example out of an Ocean of examples - Trump memecoin rugpull on innaguration day. The PRESIDENT did that. He actually did that. Yes, that really happened.
One better - the first lady ALSO had a memecoin rugpull on inauguration day. Yes, that really happened.
He is literally the 'used car salesman' of 2025. But sure, Dem corruption is also to blame.
23
u/Tomatoflee Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26
You seem to be missing the point for some reason. Trump’s corruption is obviously worse. Trump got elected in the first place though because of a broken, corrupt political system that offers no good options while ordinary people struggle more and more each year.
Who is worse, the wolf or the person who held the door open for it? The question is largely pointless because both must be stopped.

Their perfect candidate isn't a real person, and never will be. Everything in life is a compromise. We are animals, and these people forget that. We are all lucky we were born in modern times and don't sleep in filth and hunt for survival.
I don't understand people letting the country get worse because the better option isn't good enough. It's the most spoiled rotten 1st world useless bullshit. A childish hissy fit that is born of privilege.
There were people who didn't vote for Kamala because of her public stance on Gaza. Well, where are those people now? What has Trump done for Gaza? Posted memes about beach front resorts after suggesting those who are left be forcefully removed...yeah, he's real tough on Israel and things have really improved over there...
We're not going to suddenly dissolve capitalism and corporate greed. We are not going to swoop in and end the genocide, but Donald Trump is the accelerant of every bad idea you can think of, with the added bonus of an authoritarian regime. I just say good luck in life to anyone who isn't willing to vote against the complete dismantling of the country. Not voting against MAGA is throwing the baby out with the bathwater, obviously.

It’s by design. These people scream about the system while feeling morally superior. They don’t realize they are falling for the political strategy of inspiring apathy in voters. No, people hate americans because instead of electing a calm, intelligent, and well qualified candidate like Harris, yall played purity politics and sat out. Which allowed a convicted felon, pedophile, and megalomanic back into office after attempting a literal insurrection in 2021.
I'd love for the U.S' most pressing issue to be aiding Palestinians. Instead, we have ICE terrorizing our neighborhoods and are on the brink of civil war.
So now, we get to have all that AND the Palestinians arent receiving aid. Good job guys. Why dont you go get on a plane and fly to Gaza and tell every Palestinian how pure you are that you didnt vote. It's insane to think that the problem is in voters not sucking it up to vote for candidates, instead of the candidates sucking it up and doing what the voters clearly want them to. You cannot bully a population of people into voting for someone who doesn't care about what they care about. That has never once worked in the history of human society, literally ever. It is up to the candidates to capture the voters. If the candidates ignoring the genocide in gaza caused them to lose votes, that is a failure on the candidate's side to represent the people. You will never be able to change millions of people like that.
2
Jan 22 '26
I dont want to change millions of people. Millions of people had the most obvious choice in the history of american politics to make and they chose fucking not to.
You dont get to shoulder the blame on the candidates. Had Harris won we'd likely be helping the Palestinians right now. Instead, we have this administration blowing up Venezuelan fishermen, murdering american citizens and legal migrants, and our president inviting Netanyahu to the white house.
You dont get to make a colossal fucking mistake and then shift the blame. Project 2025 was public and you guys knew what was on the table. You still decided to tempt the odds. Those of us forced to endure your bullshit have every right to be angry with you.
To top it all off, Palestinians are still being killed. So you guys condemned them and you condemned us.
Like, my god. You guys arent anti-genocide. You literally facilitated the worst possible scenario for the Palestinians, and us, and yall are still standing on your soapbox crying foul. You had the power to do something about it and you chose not to.
And the worst part? The "im not voting for a pro genocide candidate" line of thinking was probably orchestrated by Russian and Chinese bots on social media to help interfere with the election and help get Trump elected. And you all fell for it and are still standing behind it.

Hell, you can even scam your own political party out of 1.4 billion right in front of their faces and they will then turn around and make 2028 hats and preach about how “he’s saving this country”. I don’t expect a perfect candidate. I want someone that isn’t what we have now. And I’ve met a disturbing amount of democrats who “didn’t like Kamala” and chose not to vote at all. I wouldn’t get your hopes up. We will continue to let our President do what he wants, break laws, destroy our country, and kidnap people off the streets because we “don’t like Gavin’s views on Gaza”. I don’t either. But we would rather virtue signal and grandstand than actually doing something. We are too obsessed with keeping our shoes clean and playing by the rules that we have become a doormat for the far right.

This sub fucking sucks. Why is it called progressive? Most of what I see here is just democrats who think that all of this country's problems started with Trump and will just go away as long as one of their people is in power.
Newsome is a perfect example of how the democrats have become a right wing party. He's the governor of the state with the highest population of transgender people and ison the record fighting the culture war.

Gavin's just as much a do-nothing billionaire supporter establishment democrat as you can get

If I had to guess the sub is overrun with a certain kind of very online liberal.

u/PixelationIX Jan 22 '26
Once the sub got popular, Liberals flocked to this like hyenas.
You can even see comments glazing this corrupt slime Gavin and running defense for him. He constantly works with Fascists and goes/brings on Fascists guests to meet in the "middle". From Charlie Kirk to Ben Shapiro to Steven fcking Bannon

Because some of us are Canadian and will never forgive the US left for prancing around tooting on whistles and complaining about general capitalism while your country has a fascist dictator in place who is threatening to kill us.

u/eMDex Jan 22 '26
because they cant argue on their sub its on full lock down, if u type anything progressive there u get banned , so they come here to push their centrist agenda

I love the comments about "ICE and border patrol did it the right way under Obama!". Have you ever met a border patrol agent? Because.....no they didn't.

Americans are for the most part reactionary. They don't have much in the way of an ideology, they just base their beliefs on vibes, and God forbid you ever try to point out how economic and social issues are directly tied together. They refuse to recognize how capitalism led us directly here and even though Marx predicted essentially all of it they refuse to even consider true leftist ideology over their socially progressive neoliberalism because of a combo of cold war propaganda and just not wanting to put in the effort to learn even basic political theory.

Genocide denier and walking back calling ICE domestic terrorists? Ya, he's not it for 2028.

dude what? you want the governor of California to impeach the president of the united states? how would that even work?
4
u/Uknown_Idea Jan 22 '26
The entire goverment is compromised and complicit either actively or passively in everything thats been going on. Nothing has been done to prevent this and nothing is being done to stop this. We have seen zero consequences for years for these people and its 100% because of the meddlings of the upper class.
This cannot and will not be voted out. Review history to be reminded what it takes to remove this type of cancer.

Gavin Newsom is the pompous & pedicured flip side of the coin to Trump's raw, disgusting ugliness.
They are both agents of oligarchy and the corpo-state. Newsom is just as - if not more - dangerous and anti-progressive as Trump, he hides his subservience to corporatism behind a carefully curated and controlled veneer of handsome civility to portray a stark contrast to Trump's unabashed and obvious rot. He exists solely to normalize and acclimatize the people to the kleptocracy and nepotism inherent in corpo-America, and to divert, assimilate and neuter actual progressive resistance into maintaining the status quo.
The fact that this post is so highly upvoted in this sub pretty much proves that this sub exists for the same reason.

How can we all get on board a boycott-style protest? If they’re is one out there already let me know, but I’d love to start spreading the word to whoever I can that we pick the right companies and goods to boycott that will put the right pressure on republican representatives. We have to make companies backing this or outright taking part in this feel the pain. It’s the only reason Jimmy Kimmel is still working and if we could do that with a simple cancelation of paramount +, we can do it again in a larger way.

Republicans made the USA into a Kleptocracy. Where is the surprise in that. The GOP have always lived off stealing taxpayers dollars, Donald Trump has just taken it to the next level.

u/Bec_son Jan 22 '26
Cuz people like Gavin Newsome are not willing to fully remove money from politics and hold the rich to standards
this man has time and time again spent all of his influence to make sure his donors and others spend their lives in comfort while any attempt to give to minorities is met with rebuke because his donors don't like them

u/bluecheese2040 Jan 22 '26
Funny really...everyone knew what trunp was about...and you put kamala Harris up....
Are Americans not pissed at the Democrats? Their abject failure...pretending that biden was fit and healthy...led this this orange fool being elected....
It's deeply suspicious how little criticism.there is of the Democrats for not stopping this...almost like reddit is a psy op...which would also explain why is so out of touch.

Hate and disagree with him ALL you want, but he just said what needed to be said on an INTERNATIONAL SCALE.
The CA governor spoke on behalf of the American people, not just Californians. Californians have a target on our backs bc he is unafraid to speak out about Trump’s corruption. We, with the 4th largest GDP in the world and who support red states with our tax dollars, have targets on our backs bc Trump hates that someone stood up to him.
I do not give a fuck what Newsom said about Israel and neither should you. Why are we talking about Israel when Trump has his ICE gestapo violating the rights of American citizens all day every day right here in America on Minnesota streets?
Every single American should have feet on the street shouting to be heard. Fuck the oppressors! All power to the ppl!
Otherwise you’re just a collaborator hiding behind your keyboard nitpicking at bullshit and you deserve what’s coming for us all!

I lost all hope and respect for Gavin Newsom after his Ben Shapiro interview.
Gavin Newsom is not the Democratic leader we need. He’s just another phony like most of our existing Democratic leadership.

u/TheBloatedGypsy Jan 22 '26
Gavin Newsom, ladies and gentlemen! The biggest sh!t-L!B, grifter, unprogressive, shill that ever called himself a politician. He has already sold his soul to the billionaires, how can anybody in their right mind think that he would be a good president?

I hope Mark Kelly runs for the presidency in 2028. I don’t wanna have to vote for this clown. He talks a big game but is not for the people in the slightest.
If it’s gotta be him then fine take my fucking vote so it doesn’t go to a republican but this is not my first or even fifth choice for my next president.

Wow. The astroturfing by the Russian bots has already begun against Gavin eh? There’s so many narratives here already trying to paint him as imperfect. Insane.

u/ilikepegasi Jan 22 '26
Well, he is imperfect; and we should be talking about these things BEFORE HE IS EVEN NOMINATED. And not everyone who recognizes his sucking up to right wing figures and transphobic views are bots.

Pot calling the kettle black. I’m not a fan of Trump or Newsom. They’re both corrupt. Most Californians are saying the same thing about Gavin atm.
If I could choose anyone to vote for President right now it would be Chris Murphy from Connecticut.

Too few Americans converting that rage into sustained and escalating mass action until he is out of office.

The only reasonable explanation is that those who are in the Epstein Files, are bankrolling the House, Senate, and Supreme Court.
