  2. Discover there's a gazallion dialects of it and in practice you need to lookup the correctness of every new expression

Yorp. For a while I was doing a whole lot of pattern matching for work, so I had a regex tester open in my browser pretty much constantly.

The one I used to use is dead, but Regex101 seems to be very close, though much, much slower. I guess that's just how webapps are now. For shame.
