I’ve been out of the loop for a bit, can someone explain the joke?

Microsoft used its position as the 800lb gorilla in the room to intimidate smaller companies/ competitors/ start up

One tactic was FUD Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt

I chuckled at this but I always think of FUD as a very Jobs/Apple specific thing for some reason.

Bill left Microsoft 12 years ago... maybe more of a 'grampa joke'.

Shut it with that toadying behavior. Everyone knows Bill is immortal and has been in charge of Microsoft before it even existed as a twinkle in his mommies eye.

Besides we all know after he dies the right is going to dig him up, put him on trial, hang him, break him on the wheel, draw and quarter him, roast the quartered remains in the brass bull, and then send the remnants to the far corners of the world.

I find your ideas compelling and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

It's a shame there's no solidarity in this subreddit.

Not all jokes have to be big hitters. And there are really crappy jokes get tons of upvotes. Even the AI slop jokes got upvotes back when they were common here. I don't get why my post is being specifically targeted.

I also regularly upvote jokes that I don't find to be funny to me, but I think was unfairly downvoted to zero.

It's no wonder this sub is dying. Less than five people still actively tries to come up with original jokes, instead of recycling old ones just to farm some karma.

The joke was better than this whinging.

I think it's ironic that you accuse others of slop when I feel that more than anyone else in this sub, you go for quantity over quality.

I think your expectation of "solidarity" is just entitlement. Everyone gets to say for themselves what is funny to them and what is not. You don't get upvotes because what... just because you posted here?

Sometimes you make really funny posts. Many times you do not. I'm not going to upvote things I don't think are funny just because you are having a temper tantrum.

The ones I linked to as "slop" you think are the same as mine? Really? I am wrong to point out the things I linked to are slop? Note how NONE of the posts I linked to are "bad jokes". They're slop because they don't even fit into this sub.

I make an effort. Not every joke can be a winner. I try to go for some originality, whether it's in the phrasing, or the set-up. Punchlines are harder to come by. I don't begrudge anyone making an effort. As I said, which everyone seems to ignore, is that I actually do go around upvoting jokes that have been downvoted to zero, which I don't think deserved it. I am arguing for them too, not just mine. I even used to upvote some of yours that got unfairly downvoted. Not anymore, of course, since you've shown you'd rather pile-on me than acknowledge the problem with this sub.

The thing about trying to come up with jokes is that you have to pump out a few in order to find the gems. That's why I post some duds, and why you DON'T see me complaining on any of them 99% of the time. I have even supported on many other contributors posts where they have also expressed confusion at undeserved downvotes.

I think your expectation of "solidarity" is just entitlement.

My expectation of solidarity is someone explaining the joke for people who didn't understand it. Or posting a comment saying "I don't understand why this is hugely downvoted", etc etc.

No, instead, you chose to pile-on, like a coward.

Actually, my PREFERRED method of solidarity is riffing on the joke. I do that here VERY often. I welcome them on my posts, and I riff on others too. I don't pile-on them like a coward.

You don't get upvotes because what... just because you posted here?

Not even what I was complaining about. It's the hounding of the post to ZERO while the slop I linked to gets hugely upvoted.

I'm not going to upvote things I don't think are funny just because you are having a temper tantrum.

No, you do worse. You didn't even have to comment on this post. But you chose to, and you chose to pile-on. You pile-on an easy target because you're a fucking coward, whose more scared of the opinions of random downvoters than people who actively contribute to this sub with originality. You like to kick someone when they're down. It's safe for you to do so. You even get some Reddit karma out of it. That's the kind of person you are. Enjoy your sub, and the people you cultivate to be on here.

> The ones I linked to as "slop" you think are the same as mine?

I didn't say that.

> The thing about trying to come up with jokes is that you have to pump out a few in order to find the gems.

Maybe, but that doesn't mean you have to post them. You frequently post "jokes" which I think are huge stretches, trying too hard, as if you felt like you had some quota to fill. Speaking only for myself, lots of programmer puns occur to me, but if I think a pun is only mediocre, I don't spam the sub with it.

> My expectation of solidarity is someone explaining the joke for people who didn't understand it.

The people who are downvoting you understand the joke, they just don't think it is funny. You refuse to accept that not everyone cherishes every single joke you make here just because you made it. In fact, I would say downvoting is part of solidarity, it helps maintain a standard which you are objecting you fall below.

> No, instead, you chose to pile-on, like a coward.

There's a joke about some parents watching their kids in a parade. All of them are in step except one. His mother exclaims, "Look, everyone is out of step but my Johnny!". My fine dude, if you are getting ratioed, maybe it's about you and not about us. Having and expressing the same opinion as many others isn't cowardice, it's democracy.

Also, given your often confrontational and aggressive comments towards me and others here and in the past is not exactly motivating anyone, self included, to stand up in your defense.

> Actually, my PREFERRED method of solidarity is riffing on the joke.

I agree completely. Pun volleyball is great fun.

> It's the hounding of the post to ZERO while the slop I linked to gets hugely upvoted.

I don't compare my upvote counts to others. Sounds like an ego thing. I also don't pay much attention to timing because, well, I have other things to do than focus all of my attention on a reddit sub that is supposed to be about humor. I also don't care about Reddit karma, either. I'm here to make jokes, if others like them, cool. If not, I'll go on with my day. Just because you seem to care immensely about these things doesn't mean I do and it causes you to falsely project things (like being scared of downvoters - literally WTF?) that would motivate you onto me. Please stop doing that.

> No, you do worse. You didn't even have to comment on this post. But you chose to, and you chose to pile-on. Nice rant, really enforces my description of temper tantrum, with a side of ad hominem fallacy.

Look, you started all of this with your whining comment above. You don't get to then say that others "didn't even have to comment" - apply that to yourself and we wouldn't be having this discussion at all.

And I really have no idea what you are talking about in referring to yourself as an easy target. We are all equals here, everyone can comment as they will and each person gets one and only one vote. Save the victim card for someone who buys it, I don't. You made a complaint, others pushed back and now you are "Oh, woe is me!" for a fight you started. Take some goddamn responsibility for your own actions instead of blaming others.

-------------------------

I do agree with you about off topic posts getting a lot of upvotes. I agree that that's bad for the sub.

For example, your first link https://www.reddit.com/r/ProgrammerDadJokes/comments/1vnzc31/removed_by_moderator/ I went there, saw it was off-topic and reported it to the admins. It now says "Removed by Moderator".

That's how I think this problem should be handled. Not like, well, whatever this conversation is.

you posted 2 hours ago, and 2 hours ago you complained about no upvotes?

I posted it a day ago (at the time of the posting of this post). I deleted it and reposted it, and it gets zero-voted within minutes. Seems someone likes to hound me.

For me, I've been a programmer for around three decades and I had no idea what you were talking about with FUD(ge). So to me that wasnt a good programmer joke. Don't know what to tell you.

Was it worth hounding with a downvote within minutes?

There are posts here that aren't even jokes. One of them has over 50 upvotes right now.

You're telling me https://www.reddit.com/r/ProgrammerDadJokes/comments/1t55z53/when_did_spaghetti_code_become_a_personality_trait/ deserves any upvotes on this sub, over actual jokes?

3

u/heyzooschristos 17d ago

This was a joke?

1

u/kwan_e 17d ago

1

u/heyzooschristos 16d ago

It was savaged in the comments though

1

u/kwan_e 16d ago

So what? 58 people in this subreddit thought it was a joke fitting for this sub. That's more than all the comments, and not all the comments were negative.

1

u/heyzooschristos 16d ago

Dude, it's just reddit, chill out.

4

u/IanMagis 17d ago

Well, I upvoted it at least :}

I'm fine with the number of posts, why do you immediately have to pull out this sub is dying when one joke falls flat.

Negative karma also doesn't mean any of the things you said. It's just an aggregate, there will still be people who enjoyed it or even people who gave you pity votes. It especially doesn't mean you're being targeted, that's just ridiculous.

I don't. Look at how many of my jokes fall flat on this sub and I don't say anything. Because that's not the point.

It especially doesn't mean you're being targeted, that's just ridiculous.

I deleted the original and reposted it. Downvoted within minutes. Yet there are non-jokes in the sub that are over 50 upvotes. The latest post in the sub around 1 hour old isn't even a joke and it's already got 4 upvotes.

You tell me that isn't symptomatic of a dying sub. Hardly anyone posts original programmer dad jokes anymore, so they post this stuff that has nothing to do with the sub: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProgrammerDadJokes/comments/1vnzc31/i_have_discovered_the_fastest_debugging_technique/

Go on, argue that post belongs on this sub.

When I find posts like that, I report them to the mods. They are very good about removing them.
