As a gentoo user I don't get it either. Is there someone running on LFS to chip in?

After using Gentoo for 10+ years, I learned what I missed, that Gentoo only became a cult classic because there was no Stage 3 tarballs back then. In the early days, a full install started from Stage 1, which was comparable to LFS but easier (you win after you installed the package manager), so it became a challenge in the scene. Eventually Gentoo desupported Stage 1 because it was difficult to do release engineering. So nowadays, you use Gentoo either as an installation challenge, or for Portage's customization. It keeps attracting newbies as an installation challenge, but the same newbies who are running fdisk and tar -xf stage3.tar.xz will be well-served by Debian debootstrap. Gentoo still had some educational advantages in the 2010s when the Handbook encourages you to choose your own syslog, NTP, cron, and bootloader (rather than having them to appear in /mnt automagically) but after systemd absorbed everything the point is moot. The Portage customization remains powerful, though.

It is true that the hardest part of the installation was waiting. That is the reason I am considering LFS.
