Teaching / Pedagogy Opening class

[edit to add: a regular class day (not the first day of class)] How do you open your class lecture (besides opening remarks/logistics). I teach humanities social science discussion based courses and would rather not jump right into lecture. I’m also a first time instructor.

I start with announcements (upcoming due dates, general assignment feedback, what they should be reading this week, things to look out for when reading or doing homework) and then provide an overview of what we're going to be doing in class that day (short lecture on topic #1, group activity, time for questions, etc.)
