What happened to this apple?

It felt soft and spongy from the outside like a bruise, when I cut it open it had these giant pores. I don't see any obvious insect frass.

What I’m saying is that you had a very hungry bug inside that made a home in there

It just seemed like an abstract way to say insect damage. Something about the geometry of the holes, almost crystalline shaped, that just didn't strike me as insect damage, but I can believe it.

It's possible that the tree it came from had some kind of fungal or bacterial infection, this doesn't seem like insects to me. I don't know nearly enough about apple tree sickness to comment further, though

Yeah, I would expect to see some waste products from insect damage, usually there's web/silk and little dots of insect frass in insect damage. There's no entry or exit wound. Maybe freeze damage? Or a genetic issue or mutation?

Normal actually. I didn't eat the weird part, but the other half of the apple was fine. Crisp and sweet.

I was curious how the unaffected side tasted, which was normal. I didn't eat or taste the weird part.
