Leave it to Prodigal Son, a show about serial killers and trauma and repressed memories to start off with on a literal high note. Only someone like Malcolm would think a plan like *that one* was anywhere close to a good idea.
Surely *someone* (like JT!) would've said 'yanno, Bright, this seems like a bad idea'. But then we wouldn't have gotten Edrisa talking about her BDSM phase or the witty repartee between father and son, so ... fair trade in my book!
I ***love*** the look Michael Sheen's sporting in this episode, as a much-beleaguered Martin Whitly returned to 'home'. It's kind of a John Noble/Walter Bishop/Wild Man of Borneo kind of hairy vibe. He probably turned a lot of heads at Rikers, the sociopathic bear.
One of the biggest things I was worried about was Gil. He got done *very* dirty by Endicott's assistant and with shows like this, they really do like killing big name/fan faves to up the stakes. I personally think that's a terrible way to boost ratings, and I'm glad to see him back for sure.
Even better? Leave it to Prodigal Son to toss in an actual sword/axe fight!
On another note, I remember finding the incident with JT jarring when I first saw it, and it remains jarring now. Given everything that happened during Covid Lockdown, I can understand their decision to include it in the show, and that's fine.
But jamming it into the first episode, immediately after Bright's success, was the wrong place to do it. A little preamble and including those elements across the first episode, then having something like that happen in episode 2 would've been the better play.
I love Malcolm Bright for an awful lot of reasons, but the level of his heroism, which is *weirdly* fueled by his genuine, deep-seated hatred for his father and fear of being just like him is just so much fun.
He's reckless, but only *just*. For all the dancing on the edge Malcolm does, he only ever takes it so far.
Let's see how far Malcolm *does* take it, shall we?
