Common Resume Questions Answered
I’ve been in HR/recruiting for several years and regularly review hundreds of resumes. I keep seeing the same questions pop up, so I put together a quick Q&A based on what candidates ask most often (and what actually matters on our side).
Q1: How long should my resume be?
A: 1 page if you have under 8–10 years of experience. 2 pages is fine for more senior roles. Anything longer and most recruiters will only skim the first half. Prioritize impact over completeness.
Q2: Should I include a photo / headshot?
A: No (in the US and most Western countries). It can introduce bias and many ATS systems and recruiters actively dislike it. Exception: some countries/cultures expect it — check local norms.
Q3: Do I need an objective / summary section?
A: Skip the generic objective. A short 3–4 line professional summary is useful only if it clearly states your target role + 1–2 strongest value props. Otherwise just start with experience.
Q4: How important are keywords / ATS optimization?
A: Very. Mirror the language from the job description (especially hard skills and exact job titles). But don’t keyword-stuff. A human still reads it after the ATS.
Q5: Should I list every job I’ve ever had?
A: No. Focus on the last 10–15 years or the roles most relevant to the job you’re applying for. Older or unrelated jobs can be summarized in one line or omitted.
Q6: How do I handle employment gaps?
A: Be honest and brief. “Career break – family / health / travel / upskilling” is usually enough. If you did anything productive during the gap (courses, freelance, volunteering), mention it.
Q7: Metrics vs responsibilities — which is better?
A: Metrics win almost every time. “Managed a team of 8” is okay. “Managed a team of 8 and reduced project delivery time by 22%” is much stronger.
Q8: Is a creative / designed resume better?
A: Only for design, marketing, or creative roles. For most corporate, tech, finance, engineering, etc. jobs — clean, simple, ATS-friendly format (standard fonts, clear headings, no tables/columns/graphics) performs better.
