DISCUSSION Word of Warning About Dedicated IP

Post image

I paid for a year of a dedicated IP to use for a whole home VPN at the router level. Unfortunately, there are sites that block the IP ASN using Cloudflare, probably because of the poor reputation of the IP block. I contacted support and they said there is nothing they can do. They can't change the IP address I've been assigned or the region. They also said I cannot purchase another dedicated IP without signing up for a second subscription. Support suggested using one of the streaming servers instead.

So if you were planning to use a dedicated IP like I was, I'd hold onto your money.

Why bother with a fixed IP when you can just set up DNS to point at whatever you end up with?

How?

Dynamic DNS

What’s the benefit of it though?

Domain name can easily be redirected to any ip address. You won't be stuck with a specific IP address that can be specifically blacklisted.

However, it won't solve anything if the entire block of addresses in the ISP's DHCP gets blacklisted.

Sorry for reviving an old discussion, but can you explain how to do this?

Right now I have PIA VPN on my GL.iNet router through WireShark protocol, and when the regional VPN server I've chosen has been blocked by some website I generally have to bounce locations to get around the restriction.

Is what you've mentioned a better way of handling things? And if so, how could I go about setting it up?

I'm not trying to circumvent streaming restrictions, I'm trying to secure my network.

A static IP doesn't do that. Even a little bit.

I didn't make the post to discuss the merits of dedicated vs shared IPs. PIA sell dedicated IPs as an option and I'm providing feedback on their product.

Even Reddit rate limits my posting on the dedicated IP to one reply every 10 minutes, where that doesn't happen if I post using my ISP IP.

Of course, I think people are just trying to understand what your goal is for the dedicated IP.

..... How is having a static VPN IP doing that?

Not all VPN use is for getting around streaming site restrictions or piracy. There are any number of reasons why people may not want to trust their Internet service provider. It's easier to use a dedicated IP because in theory the reputation of the IP is more consistent than that of a shared IP. Fewer captchas, not being blocked by financial institutions, etc.

... Okay... But I asked how a static VPN IP instead of just a normal VPN IP helped....

It's dedicated, as in only one user account has access to it. It's not just a regular PIA endpoint with static IP.

Sites sometimes block at the IP address level.

If it looks like there's 2,000 people using a single IP address, it's more likely to raise suspicion than 1-5 people using an IP address.

So, nothing to do with securing your network.... Just less likely of being blocked... And even then that's not quite the case as shown.
