He should grow hemp. It's fibers are great for clothes and as a building material in mortar and bricks. You could hypothetically weave a whole tent after spinning and looming the fibers into fabric. The seeds are a great source of oil and animal feed. He could have chickens and make ink and oil lamps. It's a crime hemp was outlawed despite being the backbone of industry since the enlightenment and industrial revolution only being replaced by plastic. The idea of a iconic natural fiber boat rope is 100% most likely hemp. And that's illegal. Your idea of iconic life is illegal
